I know what you mean .... could it be All Hallow's Eve -- which is the night before Halloween (maybe). Does that sound right for you. According to an ad in the December issue of Family Tree Magazine, there will be a free access weekend from November 11-14 in honor of Veteran's Day. It does not state that free access is for the military collection only. So, it could be only the military databases or it could be all of Ancestry. We'll have to wait and see. Hope this helps. I have always been taught that All Soul's Day is Nov. 2, the day after All Saint's. I checked in the Catholic Encyclopedia and it has always been celebrated on Nov. 2. Is there another name for the day when families go to cemeteries and light candles on the 31st of Oct? Robert, Yes, you are right. The All Soul's Day is on Nov. 2nd. I checked also. So sorry for my incorrect information. I also found out that this custom of lighting the candles of the graves goes back to the Celtic custom. Their day started with the evening before, so the candles were lighted on the evening of the 31st of October in order to celebrate the All Saint's Day (not all soul's day as I incorrectly wrote). I tried to call my contacts in Germany to verify that it is so, but could not reach anyone at the moment. As for them it is already evening at the time of this writing, I am assuming that they are lighting the candles on their family's graves. If I am wrong, I would appreciate if someone could tell us the right dates. Rosina >I have always been taught that All Soul's Day is Nov. 2, the day after All > Saint's. Werner, The arrival card for Franz Koellmel in 1944 says he was a Canadian resident. But he must have lived and worked in Michigan long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits from the US. His family filed for the death benefit through the US Consulate in Canada. I found the following information: Frank Kollmel, born 27 Jun 1911, died 9 July 1996. His Social Security number was issued in Michigan between 1966 and 1967; #362-56-7187. He also lived in Florida. From the Public Records Index at Ancestry.com, I found: Frank J. Kollmel, born 27 Jun 1911, living at 340 Horizons W, apt. 211, Boynton Beach, Florida 33435 I also found him listed at a different address in Boynton Beach, Florida. This record says he lived there in 1990. I checked the Canadian passenger records, but they end with 1935. It is possible that he arrived in Canada after this date. I hope this is helpful, --Karen On Oct 30, 2010, at 3:00 PM, Dave Dreyer wrote: > Werner; > In the Canadian border crossing records there is a Franz Koellmel, *27 Jun > 1911 Josefsdorf, who crossed from Canada to Detroit on 3 Feb 1944. > I have never been able to find this Franz Koellmel in the passenger ship > records. > Today I found the birth record for this Franz Koellmel. Werner; In the Canadian border crossing records there is a Franz Koellmel, *27 Jun 1911 Josefsdorf, who crossed from Canada to Detroit on 3 Feb 1944. I have never been able to find this Franz Koellmel in the passenger ship records. Today I found the birth record for this Franz Koellmel. He is the son of Mathias Koellmel and Anna Werth and the birth date matches exactly with that in the border crossing record. Could this be your Josef Koellmel? If, as Rosina indicates, Ancestory is free tomorrow perhaps someone can turn up these Koellmels in the Canadian passenger ship records. Any and Dave, My Notes are in CAPs within Amy's message. So how are you keeping tarck of all this info? Do you have a large spreadsheet? Eileen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy Nichols" <absn15@gmail.com> To: davey1947@suddenlink.net, "Leen Geo" <leengeo@comcast.net> Cc: BANAT@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 30, 2010 7:14:34 AM Subject: Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger, Gross Gaj - last bit of information Dave and Eileen, I wanted to finish writing the last few clues from the Gross Gaj records regarding Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger, although I was disappointed to see that there weren't any Horvaths in Ujvar. I almost couldn't believe it! I've spent dozens of hours going through the GG records trying to figure it all out and there was such a connection with the people from Ujvar that I felt certain that there would be some Horvath presence! Darn! THIS WAS QUITE A SURPRISE! First, I really do think that the record for Lorenz Horvath and Anna Klemens is really suppose to be Anna Rollinger. After seeing that Elisabeth Heck (wife of Josef Horvath) was the godmother of the child born in 1856, it pretty much convinced me. WHILE I AGREE, I AM NOT FOLLOWING YOUR LOGIC. WHAT HAVE I FORGOTTEN? I've taken a look at all the Horvaths in the Gross Gaj and the Urmenhausen records and I don't see any kind of connection. That's not to say that there's not one further back, but i don't see anything indicating that these families were close in any way. YESTERDAY I TOOK THE DAY OFF WORK AND DID THE SAME THING! SO DID I WASTE MY DAY OFF - NO, IT WAS A GOOD CONFIRMATION AND NOW THAT YOU AGREE WE CAN MOVE ON TO OTHER PLACES. But there definitely are some connections between Josef Horvath (and wife Elisabeth Heck), Jakob Horvath, and Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger, as well as a few other families in Kriva Bara. I thought I'd write it out and you can see what you think. OK SO I SHOULD HAVE READ MORE OF HTRE MESSAGE BEFORE RESPONDING. 1. Josef Horvath and Elisabeth Heck 1857 - house #4 ; son, Lorenz, is born; Godparents: Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger . (This makes me think that Josef (born abt 1817) is not Lorenz' father, but instead that Josef was naming his son after him). Also, in 1857, Mathias Samson and wife, Anna Lang, were living with Josef in house #4. (The Samson's were from Ernsthausen ) 1858 - house # 3 , burial record for above son, Lorenz. I'm not sure if this residence is noted correctly (they are again living in #4 a few years later), but in 1856, Margaretha Samson was living in #3 as well. 1861 - house #4 , daughter, Anna, is born; Godparents: Franz Kernviess and Anna Horvath (I'm not sure who this Anna Horvath could be) 1864 , no residence listed; daughter, Margaretha is born; Godparents: Peter Genzinger and Maria Heck 1870 , no residence listed, son, Wilhelm, is born, : Godparents: Wilhelm Aupert and Katharina Kremer Josef and Elisabeth had other children before relocating to Kriva Bara and these children are noted to have been born in both Gross Scham and Klopodia, which was a filial parish of Gross Scham. HOW DO I LEARN MORE ABOUT FILIAL PARISH CONNECTIONS? 1, Magdalena (1847-1850 in Gross Scham) married Johann Klemens (son of Johann Klemens and Clara Szemers). Johann is noted as being from Sackelhausen (maybe 10 or 15 miles from Ujvar), but his father's burial record lists him as being born in Ujvar (although there is no mention of him in the Ujvar FB) SO WHAT IS THE KLEMENS CONNECTION? GIVEN THAT ONE RECORD OF LORENZ AND ANNA MISTAKENLY LISTS ANNA KLEMENS THERE MAY BE A CLOSE TIE. 2, Elisabeth Julianna (1852 in Klopodia ) married Nikolaus Urban (son of Paul Urban and Rosalia Szemer) and Wilhelm Aubert. (The Urbans were from Ujvar ) 3. Katharina (1857 in Klopodia ), married Adam Janko And just one more note about Josef and Elisabeth - Elisabeth Heck was the godmother to Lorenz Horvath's and Anna Klemens (Rollinger) first child in 1856. 2. Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger 1856 - house #92 , Lorenz Horvath and Anna Klemens (probably Rollinger) have their first born daughter, Elisabeth; Godmother was Elisabeth Heck (wife of Josef Horvath, #4) HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS IS THE FIRSTBORN? IS THERE A SPECIFIC NOTATION? In 1857, Nikolaus Frank, husband of Eva Quitter and their son, Nikolaus Frank and wife, Elisabeth Jerhof were living in house #92 as well. It could be that they were living there with Lorenz and Anna, or that they moved in after Lorenz and Anna had moved to #72. However, in 1859 Lorenz and Anna were living with Elisabeth Jerhof's brother, Johann, in house #76. The Jerhof's were from Sartscha . The Frank's were from Johannisfeld (which is about 8 miles from Ujvar). 1858 - house #72 ; son, Josef is born; Godparents: Josef Stocker and Margaretha Rollinger (wife of Johann Gaser?). (Paul Urban and wife, Rosalia Szemer were living in #72 in 1859, although Lorenz and Anna were no longer living there). 1859 - house #76; daughter, Katharina, is born; Godparents: Johann Kandler and Katharina Wilwerth). House #76 appears to be the home of the Heinrichs. In 1857, Nikolaus Heinrich and wife Apollonia Csernye were living here and in 1860, Stefan Heinrich and wife, Elisabeth Popp were living in #76. Both Nikolaus and Stefan were from Ujvar . (Nikolaus is the godfather for one of Lorenz' children and Lorenz is the godfather for one of Nikolaus' in 1860...and it appears that Nikolaus named on of his sons after Lorenz) 1860 - house #75 ; twins, Anna and Nikolaus, were born, Godparents: Nikolaus Heinrich and Anna Beer. The Heinrichs were from Ujvar . Anna Beer was the 2nd wife of Jakob Horvath and they had just been married a few months prior. They were living with Lorenz and Anna at this time. Anna was from Ernsthausen . In 1858, there were also Heinrichs living in #75 - Susanna and Elisabeth (who married Christoper Appel). Elisabeth was the sister of Stefan Heinrich, #76, and was born in Ujvar . 1863 , no residence listed; son Lorenz is born; Godparents: Lorenz Fridlein and Magdalena Kancker 1866 - no residence listed, twins, Nikolaus and Katherine were born; Godparents: Peter Kremer and Katharina Klemens 3. Jakob Horvath and Anna Beer 1860 - house #75 , Jakob Horvath (born 1812 in Grabatz) married Anna Beer (Ernsthausen); Witnesses: Lorenz Horvath and Josef Horvath. Previous to this marriage, Jakob was married to Elisabeth Taugner in 1835 in Lenauheim and they had children in the following years: 1837, 1838, 1840, etc. all in Lenauheim. If Lorenz was born somewhere between 1836-1839, it doesn't seem as if it's likely that Jakob would be Lorenz' father. Although there's always a chance. 1861 - house #59, daughter, Anna, is born; Godparents: Nikolaus Funk and Anna Horvath. In 1860, Nikolaus Heinrich and Apollonia Cyserne are living in #59 as well. In 1860, Georg Kandler and Francsica Kalmar are living in #59. 1863 - no residence listed; son, Josef, is born; Godparents: Josef Horvath and Magdalene Bohn 1864 - no residence listed; twins, Peter and Katharina is born; Godparents: Peter Oferreicher and Roaslia Mayer 1865 - no residence listed; daughter, Maria, is born; Godparents: Johann Hauser and Maria Fridlein. It just seems that all the families that the Horvath's were connected to were up around Ujvar, Johannisfeld, Sackelhausen, etc., but again, there are no Horvath's listed in the Ujvar FB. Josef Horvath and Elisabeth Heck did live for many years in the Gross Scham / Klopodia area, so I would suggest that that may be the next place you would want to look. But I also want to say that in response to one of your posts regarding Lorenz and Anna, Fran Matkovich responded saying that there were Horvaths in Tomsdorf ( Tamašfalva) and Hetin - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BANAT/2010-08/1281887350 In 1897 these two villages were merged and if you look where Hetin is...it's probably about 4 or 5 miles from Ujvar. I would definitely think, given the connections above, that this would be a place to check. However, it doesn't appear as if this village was founded until 1841, which seems to late for Lorenz to have been born there. I read that up until 1860, Hetin was a filial parish of Gertianosch. I think this may be one of the familienbuch's being worked on? But the LDS also has the film. Can't hurt to look. The only other thing to mention is many of the wives of husbands from the Ujvar area were named Szmer. So maybe there's some connection with that family. I've spent many hours going through the GG records and tried to pull out any clues as to where the Horvath's were from, but there's just so little direct evidence. Hopefully some of this will help a bit. Amy -- "Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."

That's good news for all of us who are not regular members. 31st of October is also "All Souls Day" and all of Europe is heading to their mostly lovingly tended cemeteries to light candles on their families graves. I'm not sure if this residence is noted correctly (they are again living in #4 a few years later), but in 1856, Margaretha Samson was living in #3 as well. *1861* - house *#4*, daughter, Anna, is born; Godparents: Franz Kernviess and Anna Horvath (I'm not sure who this Anna Horvath could be) *1864*, no residence listed; daughter, Margaretha is born; Godparents: Peter Genzinger and Maria Heck *1870*, no residence listed, son, Wilhelm, is born, : Godparents: Wilhelm Aupert and Katharina Kremer Josef and Elisabeth had other children before relocating to Kriva Bara and these children are noted to have been born in both Gross Scham and Klopodia, which was a filial parish of Gross Scham. 1, Magdalena (1847-1850 in *Gross Scham)* married Johann Klemens (son of Johann Klemens and Clara Szemers). Johann is noted as being from Sackelhausen (maybe 10 or 15 miles from Ujvar), but his father's burial record lists him as being born in *Ujvar* (although there is no mention of him in the Ujvar FB) 2, Elisabeth Julianna (1852 in *Klopodia*) married Nikolaus Urban (son of Paul Urban and Rosalia Szemer) and Wilhelm Aubert. (The Urbans were from * Ujvar*) 3. Katharina (1857 in *Klopodia*), married Adam Janko And just one more note about Josef and Elisabeth - Elisabeth Heck was the godmother to Lorenz Horvath's and Anna Klemens (Rollinger) first child in 1856. *2. Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger* * * *1856* - house *#92*, Lorenz Horvath and Anna Klemens (probably Rollinger) have their first born daughter, Elisabeth; Godmother was Elisabeth Heck (wife of Josef Horvath, #4) In 1857, Nikolaus Frank, husband of Eva Quitter and their son, Nikolaus Frank and wife, Elisabeth Jerhof were living in house #92 as well. It could be that they were living there with Lorenz and Anna, or that they moved in after Lorenz and Anna had moved to #72. However, in 1859 Lorenz and Anna were living with Elisabeth Jerhof's brother, Johann, in house #76. The Jerhof's were from *Sartscha*. The Frank's were from *Johannisfeld* (which is about 8 miles from Ujvar). *1858* - house *#72*; son, Josef is born; Godparents: Josef Stocker and Margaretha Rollinger (wife of Johann Gaser?). (Paul Urban and wife, Rosalia Szemer were living in #72 in 1859, although Lorenz and Anna were no longer living there). *1859* - house #76; daughter, Katharina, is born; Godparents: Johann Kandler and Katharina Wilwerth). House #76 appears to be the home of the Heinrichs. In 1857, Nikolaus Heinrich and wife Apollonia Csernye were living here and in 1860, Stefan Heinrich and wife, Elisabeth Popp were living in #76. Both Nikolaus and Stefan were from *Ujvar*. (Nikolaus is the godfather for one of Lorenz' children and Lorenz is the godfather for one of Nikolaus' in 1860...and it appears that Nikolaus named on of his sons after Lorenz) *1860* - house *#75*; twins, Anna and Nikolaus, were born, Godparents: Nikolaus Heinrich and Anna Beer. The Heinrichs were from *Ujvar*. Anna Beer was the 2nd wife of Jakob Horvath and they had just been married a few months prior. They were living with Lorenz and Anna at this time. Anna was from *Ernsthausen*. In 1858, there were also Heinrichs living in #75 - Susanna and Elisabeth (who married Christoper Appel). Elisabeth was the sister of Stefan Heinrich, #76, and was born in *Ujvar*. *1863*, no residence listed; son Lorenz is born; Godparents: Lorenz Fridlein and Magdalena Kancker *1866* - no residence listed, twins, Nikolaus and Katherine were born; Godparents: Peter Kremer and Katharina Klemens *3. Jakob Horvath and Anna Beer* *1860* - house *#75*, Jakob Horvath (born 1812 in Grabatz) married Anna Beer (Ernsthausen); Witnesses: Lorenz Horvath and Josef Horvath. *1861* - house #59, daughter, Anna, is born; Godparents: Nikolaus Funk and Anna Horvath. In 1860, *Nikolaus Heinrich and Apollonia Cyserne* are living in #59 as well. In 1860, Georg Kandler and Francsica Kalmar are living in #59. *1863* - no residence listed; son, Josef, is born; Godparents: Josef Horvath and Magdalene Bohn *1864* - no residence listed; twins, Peter and Katharina is born; Godparents: Peter Oferreicher and Roaslia Mayer *1865* - no residence listed; daughter, Maria, is born; Godparents: Johann Hauser and Maria Fridlein. But I also want to say that in response to one of your posts regarding Lorenz and Anna, Fran Matkovich responded saying that there were Horvaths in Tomsdorf (Tamašfalva) and Hetin - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BANAT/2010-08/1281887350 In 1897 these two villages were merged and if you look where Hetin is...it's probably about 4 or 5 miles from Ujvar.
Dear Listers, I want to take genealogy classes because I am a volunteer at a Family History Center near my home in Saint George, Utah, but feel inadequate without training. Has anyone heard of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies in Toronto, Canada? Their website says they are affiliated with the University of Toronto. Do they have a good reputation? I am limited to online classes. I would appreciate any knowledge or opinion of this Institute. Thanks, Carolyn Roche
What a great idea. I know I have a photo copy of a letter from my great-great grandfather in Molidorf to his daughter (my great-grandmother) in Michigan. I'll see if I can dig it up. Hi Joan, I descend from LETANG/LETHANG's from the Banat. I'm unaware of any of them coming from Ruskodorf, but there were many of them in the Charleville/St. Hubert area. Here is a link to the ones in my tree: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=scottypimpin&recno=6479 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=scottypimpin&recno=6506 I don't see a direct connection to your Katerina off-hand, but there might be a connection in here somewhere. Josef Wolf, a faculty member of the Institut fuer donauschwaebische Geschichte at the University of Tuebingen is starting a collection of correspondence between Banaters who came to America and their relatives and friends who remained in the Banat. Copies of letters can be sent to Wolf at Josef Wolf Mohlstrasse 18 72074 Tuebingen Germany Wolf can be contacted at; josef.wolf@idgl.bwl.de or through the institute's website at; http://www.idglbw.de/ I might add that Josef Wolf is a heavy-duty professional Banat researcher who generates the kind of data which is so useful in understanding the Banat for family history researchers. You will find a list of Josef Wolf's publications at the institute's website. I encourage those who still have family papers which include such letters make photocopies and send them to Wolf. If the letters are still accompanied by their envelopes also make a photocopy of the envelope as well since the address and postmark may contain useful information. Dave Dreyer
Dave, Thank you for the Heinrich information! I'm really kind of amazed there are no Horvath's in the book. There's such a connection with them in Kriva Bara, but I guess that came from somewhere else! Well....back to look again! Thanks very much!
