    3. Dave, thank you for your help. I should have done some more digging before posting, but I was excited with the wealth of information in the Setschan book. I have some follow-up questions/comments. How might I view/obtain the old map of Setschan? The chronicle at the end was inserted as an image into the PDF, so I can't easily use Google translate. I am going to try and tackle the chronicle with an OCR Reader and the Google Translate, which will result in a very rough translation, but I don't read German, and that's better than nothing. If there are any web-based or English language sources, I would be grateful for links. What I meant by "general entry" for 1946 is that it doesn't supply a specific date, and since it was an internment camp, was a general date supplied because of lack of knowledge of details on those interned? Regarding Stefan who died in Romania, my follow-up would be where did the information about Romania come from originally? Again, thank you for your time. Your suggestions have really helped my research. 3. Hi all I have struck a vein of gold in research on the WEBER family of Setschan, specifically family 5023 and 5034. I have some general questions and also specific ones about family 5034 (which is pasted below for reference). If I were to want to obtain copies of the church book entries for this data, would that be possible, and how would I go about doing so? If someone has done this, could you give me an idea of the cost? Is there an old map of Setschan available? Particularly one that gives the house numbers? The record indicates that Katharina WEBER (nee Hiljer) died in Lager Setschan. Can you recommend resources to learn more about this internment camp to be included in the family history I am writing? Also, family data indicates she died 23 Sept 1945 (from a baby book). Is 1946 a general entry? Is there a family book for Pardan? The record indicates that Stefan (5034.5) died in Romania at an unknown date. Where would I learn more about this? Finally, I have a great deal of information on Elisabeth (5034.3). 3. Hi Dave, Brigitte, As my father was a DP ("stateless") who came over by passenger ship in 1951, and I have the photocopy of his page of the passenger list, I thought I would check what it said next to his name. In the masters/surgeon/US officer column, his name was marked with "US Com" - perhaps the same as USC? Elsewhere on the page, most of the other passengers have a note for "NCWC", one has the note "Am PD," and one person has the note "Sponsor Truppner." Going on the assumption that the information in this column might be sponsor information, I searched around a bit and came up with the following possibilities: NCWC = National Catholic Welfare Conference (see this page: http://archives.cmsny.org/2013/07/22/national-catholic-welfare-conference-department-of-immigration-new-york-office-and-the-catholic-committee-for-refugees-records-1921-1965/) US Com = US Committee for the Care of European Children Am PD = American Committee for the Resettlement of Polish DPs (this note next to two Polish names) So maybe TAS and CWS (CWC?) are additional sponsor organizations, but I couldn't narrow those down. 3. Hello to Valerie Andres, with a postscript to Dave Dreyer on the Andres family in Ernsthausen. I have been interested in the Andres family for a while, and have taken a few notes on them, because they seem to interact quite a lot with my Heh/Hoh family, mainly as godparents at christenings, back and forth. They have also on occasion married a Heh, though no one on my direct tree, and none from the list that Dave provided in response to Valerie's inquiry. And so, I do seem to remember that there was a Jacob Andress in Ernsthausen during that time. But, as Dave is indicating, he may not be the same one, as a brother to George, because he would have been a lot older than George. Anyway, for what it's worth, Jacob Andress married in Ernsthausen in 1840 to Anna Stahl. He was listed as a widow, of the age of 56, with a notation that he was originally from Vitsburg. His first wife was Margaret NN, who died in 1836. He died April 4, 1852, this time with an age of 70, and the note this time for place of origin was Vildsburg in Germania. I would be interested if anyone in the Andres family knows of any connection to the Heh/Hoh family. I am also curious, if anyone knows, if Jacob's place of origin might be Bitburg, Germany, as the Google map did not have anything quite like Vitsburg or Vildsburg. All the best, Marilyn

    3. Dear friends of this list, in the ship's list and the flight list of new york in the aftermath of WW2 I find shortcuts USC, TAS, NCWS, CWS. Does anyone know the meaning? The associated text reads: This column for use of the master, surgeon, and U.S. officers. The words "Head Tax excempt" and "Head tax collected" I can understand. Does anyone know the background of this tax? The associated text reads: This column for use of the master, surgeon, and U.S. officers. Does anyone know the background of this tax? I have found that refugees and stateless persons were exempt from this tax. Then who pays for the cost of the crossing? I'm happy about every hint. 3. Brigitte, Up until 1952 immigrants to the U. S. were required to pay a head tax. The tax was 50 cents which doesn't sound like much these days. Normally, for most immigrants this was included in the price of the ticket. Tourists and those in transit had to pay the tax but it was refunded when they departed. Kids under the age of 16 did not have to pay the tax, probably leading many to understate the age of some of their kids. The abbreviation USC stands for U. S. Citizen. I am uncertain of meaning for the remaining abbreviations. In this time period almost all the immigrates to the U. S. were DPs. As a result most were stateless----perhaps CWS was Citizens without [a} state and then NCWS a Noncitizen without [a] state. I do not find this explanation very compelling. Obviously, almost all DPs did not have the financial means to pay for passage to America. After the end of the war many organizations sprang up to pay for passage. Some of these were church, ethnic and civic organizations, some were sponsored by relatives already here in the UP S., some by international organizations(perhaps the Red Cross and the International Refugee Organization). In the period immediately after the war it took some time for normal commercial transatlantic passenger ship to resume. Many DPs were transported in U. S. Army troop transports and as such could be mixed sometimes with U. S. Army personal returning to the U. S. 3. Dear List, I just found this on-line resource that lists R-P and Rheinhessen villages along with the dates of their church books all nicely broken out by denomination. If I understand this, as I am not a German speaker, I believe that the list was compiled in 2011 by the Landesarchive Speyer. If someone else has already posted this, I apologize. http://www.lha-rlp.de/uploads/media/Kirchenbuchverzeichnis_uebergreifend.pdf Hoping this helps someone, Deborah Owens

> mfg > Liane Falzboden > > Betreff: Ernsthausen > Hallo Fr.
