Linda, It happens because the spelling variants all(mostly) sound the same. You will find a table of the phonetic alphabet for genealogical purposes in any introductory how-to-do publication it for German research and occasionally in the introductory section to German family books. Thus, the names Dreyer and Trier are spelling varients of the same name because they sound the same. The main changes encountered are the interchange of the letters B and P D and T less common is the interchange of k and g. In spoken German, unlike English, all letters are pronounced with the possible exception of h which can be hardly perceptible. There was a big change in the accepted German spelling rules in the 1930s in which h was dropped from the spelling of many words because it was not pronounced. Thus the German word for gate, thor became tor. The common occurrence of sz in names found in Banat records, for example Masszong (or Maszong) which we would normally spell as Massong is a twist introduced by Hungarian influence. When the name is written by a German the Z will be dropped. When one encounters the sz instead of s it is a good sign that the clerk or writer is a Hungarian. One encounters the Hungarian sz variant frequently in the passenger ship records but once in American the spelling reverts to the standard German spelling. Dear Friends, I visited the Novi Sad museum several years back and they had an exhibit on the Donauschwabs. It was very interesting. Also, there is an effort to have a museum in Vrbas (sp?) and they have quite a collection. I think they also have a building, but on my last visit it was not open. I managed to run into a young man and his Serbian wife who had made a reservation to see the collection, so I went in with them and his wife translated. They had a great collection. They had the contents of the pharmacy, all these beautiful old oak cabinets and bottles and jars. The ladies there were very friendly and welcoming. At that time they were hoping to open as a museum, but were working on the funding. T hat was my understanding. Anyhow, I agree with the message below that the Serbian people are moving forward. I have always been treated wit h great kindness and hospitality in Serbia. In 2008 I bought an old Donauschwab house in Ravno Selo, which was called Schowe. I have not visited in several years due to illness and other issues, but love my little village and my house and plum orchard is quite beautiful. If anyone reading this is going for a visit, I can help you meet up with some very nice Serbian people who I am sure would help you in your visit find anything you were looking for. At least they did for me. Evelyn Ziegler. If anyone wants to discuss this further my number s 561 308 3266. -----Original Message----- From: Rita Schiwanowitsch <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Sent: Tue, Apr 22, 2014 2:32 pm Subject: Re: [BANAT-L] Exhibition in Belgrade >From what I have heard from others, the exhibit in Belgrade will also focus ainly on the other Serbian ethnic groups that were also victims of Tito's egime. Hello everyone! I have just came back from a long and exhausting tour and I have noticed this e-mail. I have to reply to a lot of mail that arrived while I was absent. If Renée Carl would like my professional opinion (about the sources, repositories and possible action), I will be glad to provide one, free of any charge but my only condition would be a separate e-mail with the abstract of the case facts and the goals for this investigation. I am just too tired and have too many e-mails so I would like to avoid studying multiple threads. Thank you very much! Also, thank you Dave for drawing my attention to this case and big hello to Susan! See below for comments on the children born in Johannisfeld, marked with >>> Susan Clarkson ________________________________ From: rk carl <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2014 4:09 PM Subject: [BANAT-L] Searching Pardan and Johannisfeld for HILLIER (HILJER) and SCHÄDL (Schedel) I’m looking for suggestions on where to go next in my research and hoping this list will have some suggestions. I have found data on -- HILLIER (HILJER), Nikolaus and his wife SCHÄDL (Schedel), Elisabeth contained in the Karl Benz Setschan Familienbuch, but nothing on their vital details. Based on the birthdate/location of their children (details on children at end of message), I have created a list of locations and approximate dates: Beodra (Novo Miloševo) 1839-1845 Setchan (Secanj) 1849 Johannisfeld (Iohanisfeld, Romania) 1852-1859 Pardan (Medja) 1866 Based on where the children were born and lived, it seems like the best place to find death details on HILLIER (HILJER), Nikolaus and his wife SCHÄDL (Schedel), Elisabeth would be in Setschan, Johannisfeld or Pardan. I didn’t find anything in Setschan. It’s my understanding that information from the Familienbuch Johannisfeld was included in the Setschan book, but perhaps it would be worthwhile to check? Also, I noted that the Pardan book only includes 1801 - 1836/1835/1835. Finally, to my knowledge there is not a Beodra book, correct? Could someone with Johannisfeld and Pardan books look for HILLIER (HILJER), Nikolaus and his wife SCHÄDL (Schedel), Elisabeth and let me know if my assumptions seem correct, or if you find anything please let me know.
