    1. [BANAT-L] German Bourgeois Families of Gross-Kikinda before World War II
    2. Fran Matkovich via
    3. I just finished reading German Bourgeois Families of Gross-Kikinda before World War II by Marta Istvan. I enjoyed reading about the history of Kikinda and areas in the vicinity. The rise of the Bohn brick factory had a tremendous influence on the success of the Banat and its surroundings. The importance of the horse dry mill is also demonstrated. Kikinda became a popular social gathering place for the surrounding towns. The photos of the brick factory, the mill, the town and the residents are wonderful. Although I have never been in the Banat, this book helped me to appreciate to some extent what it was like. Among the families included in this book are Bohn, Muschong, Kisslinger, Rieslinger, Penz, Mayer, Draxlinger, Fritsch, Dippong, Bauer, Menacker. Fran Matkovich

    3. Ricardo -- I'm back again .... I just looked where you must have looked ... in the Glogowatz familienbuch page 657 and found your Katharina Emelsperger married to Jacob Hein. Erwin notes your Katharina/Katalin died in Neupanat 3 June 1838 ... so if the date corresponds then she was recorded under her married name. There are several variations of the Emelsperger name ... I will look them up later in the Wilhelm & Kalbrunner records for you As you probably know, her father Ignaz was born about 1718 and died in Glogowatz. The next notation on page 281 indicates Pankraz Emelsperger (who could be a relative) was born about 1728 Bayern) No indication if these two were related. I will try and do a bit of research later ... right now have some bills and such to take care of. Have a good day. 3. Ricardo -- I just had another thought. I took another look at the record for Katalin Hein. You say your Katalin Hein was born Emelsperger. However, it is customary in these records for the women to be known/recorded by their maiden name. It may happen otherwise .... to be recorded by the married name. Have you considered that your Katalin would be recorded as Emelsperger. I also took a quick look at www.familysearch.org .... I found a Semelsberger .... and other variations. I also took a quick look at the Wilhelm & Kalbrunner records and could not find the surname Emelsperger. I know it does get quite confusing when looking at records dating so far back. Perhaps Ann will have a better take on whether the Katalin Hein in the record was recorded by the maiden name or married name. And I will take a better look at the enlarged record later. 3. Ricardo -- Welcome back to the DVHH list. I will take a better look at the entry later ... and perhaps someone else will be more familiar. But here is one guess ... the first column that says "Ka" ... could refer to her being Roman Catholic. As for the others I need to enlarge it better ...using a magnifying glass on the entry is not enough .... Living to the age of 91 is just amazing for that time frame ... although many of our ancestors did live quite long. Going back to a birth in 1756 ... it could mean she was born in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation ... which doesn't always help.... Will look again later. 3. Hello Dave, I apologize for being slow in telling you Thank You for your reply regarding the Putz family from Sartscha.  I hope I can write what I want to say so it make sense as the additonal information you sent Re:  Joseph Putz * 1878 Sartscha & married Barbara Harsch has caused a dilemma for me.  I've tried the last two days to sort it out but without too much success.  Any thoughts by you at the end of this will be greatly appreciated. Eileen Lund-Johnson sent me copies from the Sartscha CD showing the church book pages for: 1. Petrus Putz * 22 Sept 1873, Baptized 23 Sept 1873, parents Joannes Putz &     Margaretha Kortje. (Matched exactly what I had) 2. Josephus Putz *18 Oct 1875, Baptized 19, Oct. 1875, parents Joannes Putz &     Margaretha Kortje. (Records on Ancestry had him born 15 Oct 1875) John, Margaret, Peter, wife Barbara Lafluer & 2 of their children, Jacob & John are buried on the Putz family Plot, Mt. Hope Cemetery, Croswell, Mi.  Third son, Anton died in California.  Joseph, his wife Mary Jost, & their children Jacob, John & Nicholas also are all buried on family plot, Mt Hope cemetery, Croswell, Mi.   Peter, his wife, Jacob, John & Anton as well as Janos & Margit arrived in New York Nov 14, 1911 & went to Croswell to his brother, Joseph Putz. Joseph Putz, wife Maria, Jacob & Johann arrived Baltimore Dec 8, 1904 & were going to father-in-law Johann Yost, Cleveland.  By 1910 this family was in Croswell & Joseph was working for the Michigan Sugar Co. as well as farming.  Sugar beets was then & still is big business in the Saginaw Valley area & Sanilac Co.  Pioneer Sugar Co. currently runs the sugar factory in Croswell.   So far this all made sense.  Your information then says: In the Lazarfeld book there is listed: Josef Putz *1878 son of Johann & Margaret Kortje.  (born 3 years later than my Josef).  That he married 31 Aug 1902 Lazarfeld - Barbara Harsch & they had two children:  Katharina *24 Feb 1903 Kathreinfeld                Josef *19 Sept 1904 Kathreinfeld After thinking I had something wrong in what I had first put together I have determined there are two Joseph Putz families & in time this 2nd family also was in Croswell, Mi with Joseph working for the sugar factory. I have not found Joseph Putz born 1878 on a ship manifest yet but I have his wife Barbara & children Katalin & Joseph arriving N.Y. 7 July 1907 going to husband, Joseph Putz, Caro, Michigan who worked for Michigan Sugar Co. I have now found them in the 1910 Census, Tuscola Co., 1920 census Sanilac Co. living in Buel, 1930 Census Sanilac Co - Lexington, 1940 census St Clair Co., - Riley. My question is, how is it possible that these two seperate Joseph Putz's have the same parents?  Since they both came from Scartscha, I'm sure they are related but would parents give two living sons the same first name?   Thank you so much for taking the time to read all this and any thoughts you might have would be so much appreciated. 3. I have just finished transcribing all of the Neupanat marriages from the parish registers and the civil marriages that are on the village-records.org site. I have also used Alf Kuehrt's Sanktanna book, Erwin Kilzheimer's Glogowatz familienbuch and the Sanktmarton book to add and round out the information. I will be working on checking and corrections and then will ask David Preston to post the gedcom to the site. I am having some confusion with the Zollner, Zellner, Zeller names, but have managed to sort out the Plaumert Plennert Punnert names just fine. I know there will be errors because I am not fluent in German or Latin, but it is a good beginning for all of us. I take suggestions and criticism well and will make any and all corrections we can agree to. If you have questions or suggestions while I am still working to correct the database, please email me. I hope this helps all of us as we share our information. Anne Leptich, AG [email protected]
