    3. Rosina, I read through the document through Google Translate, and found it was most readable. It sickens the stomach. Over 200,000 people slaughtered, men, women and children. Hitler had a rival. Why was the world not watching! These are the stories my mother told. My mother, born in Batscka in 1905 hated the Serbs with a vengeance. There was no reconciliation for her. It is a long article, but worth the time translating. A must to read. Unfortunately I just can't find the time to translate it for you now. We all know that in 1944 Tito ordered all those DS, that he called "State Enemy" to be eliminated. On 18th of May 1945 another order was implemented that all those unmarked graves are to stay a secret. Fortunately times changed. 60 years later, on 9th of July 2009 a commission was formed, but only on 29th of April 2010 implemented to search in the archives for documentation of those atrocities. They found them! Behind the names of murdered women as a reason it was written: "spy or prostitute". And behind the names of the children it was written "sympathizing with the enemy." So far 25,000 names of the victims were found in the archives but the search is still ongoing. Rosina T. Schmidt www.hrastovac.net

They either provided corroborating information for what I had already developed from other sources or new information and possible areas to proceed in. This leads me to request a new look-up, from the Stefan Stader Sammelwerk Donauschwäbischer Kolonisten, Volumes V (M – O) and VII (Sche – Sz). I would greatly appreciate a look-up for the following (with names, dates, places of origin) : Barbara Schnetter, or her parents or grandparents, in Glogowatz circa 1772, Peter Niess, or his parents or grandparents, in Glogowatz circa 1769 – 1775 Anton Niess born about 1733, died 19 August 1786 Glogowatz Peter Niess born about 1740, died 26 May 1787 Glogowatz, married Magdalena No Name, born about 1746 Neupanat , died Glogowatz. One daughter: Anna Maria about 1765 - 1770. Other possible connections, arriving in the Banat according to Wilhelm and Kallbrunner: 23 September 1763 Johann Christian Niess - occupation: Schneider, from Sachsen, settled in St. Peter. (Could be either Deutsch St. Peter or Klein St. Peter) 24 April 1764 Johann Nisen, Wünchringen, aus dem Luxemburgischen (Winchringen, Kr. Saarburg), settled in Guttenbrunn and then Neudorf bei Lippa 10. May 1765 Johann Nisl, von Serch, aus dem Trierischen (Serrig, Kr. Saarburg), no information on settlement. Since there are numerous variants in the spelling of the Niess surname (e.g., Nis, Niss, Nies, Niess, Niesz, Nieß, Nisl, Niesl, Niesel, Nisen, Niessen), I would appreciate the Stader entries for any of these variants. (If it’s a long list – which is probably unlikely—maybe it can be scanned and sent to me off-list.) As I’ve seen with my previous look-up request, List members often go out of their way to help a fellow researcher. I do greatly appreciate everyone’s help. Thanks again in advance. 3. John -- I did a further look-up to see what else is available. I have the Wilhelm & Kalbrunner CD which list many people who registered in Vienna on their way to settle the Banat et al. Since you are working on such an early settler I took a look. Could not find an Anton or a Peter ... but when people came through, only one person in the party registered. Here is what I found: 23 September 1763 Johann Christian Niess - occupation: Schneider anges. in St. Peter ... I believe this means he was meant to be a settler in the village of St. Peter ... the only one I could find was Klein St. Peter ... perhaps someone else knows if I am reading this abbreviation correctly. Did not indicate where he was coming from. 11 October 1784 Johann Niess 8 persons in his paty out of Deutsch Lorraine 17 August 1786 Lucas Niess 5 persons in his party Schwaben -- this could mean Schwabia Your Peter Niess married in Glogowatz in 1796 with daughters Katharina b. 1796 Neupanat and Anna Maria b. 1797 Neupanat Hard to tell if your Peter was part of either of these groups. Next suggestion is to ask for a Stader Look-up .... Stader tended to give more information regarding early settlers and where they came from. Good luck. 3. John -- What George sent you about Peter Niess is exactly what is in the Familienbuch. When a birth date is listed as *errech ... this means the date of birth is usually derived from the age at the date of death. Glogowatz books only started in the 1770's ... There are two earlier entries for the Niess surname ... neither gives a place of origin. One entry: Anton Niess b. errech 1733 d. 19 August 1786 Glogowatz Second entry: Peter Niess b. errech 1747 d. 26 May 1787 Glogowatz married Magdalena NoName b. errech 1746 Neupanat d. Glogowatz One daughter: Anna Maria b. errech 1770 d. 16 September 1765 Glogowatz. I know how disappointing it can be when you hit this kind of "brick wall" .. I just wanted you to know that George gave you all the information that is available.
