Dear Hans and Gunter, Thank you so much for taking the time to do the look-up for me. It is interesting to learn that the places of origin in Reiser’s work only come from W&K and the early church book records. I find that some of the settlers on the 1774 list are never mentioned in the early churchbook records, and I wondered if the settler himself told the person who created the list where he came from, as was done in a census. Now I know the information came from W&K. So, I am back to square one. It is hard for me to believe that there is no record - even a military one - showing Leonhard’s assignment to Mercydorf. Looking through a 100 rolls of military microfilm for a Seven Years War enlistment record without so much as a clue is too daunting a task. Thank you, again, for your responses. Cathy Teufel O'Neill

A new database has recently been added to the Molidorf.com web site. Using the Ship's List extractions created by Dave Dreyer, we have selected all the entries for immigrants who were born in Molidorf, or who resided there at the time of their emigration. These entries have been updated to include any additional info available, and even a few new entries have been added. In total there are nearly 500 entries, covering the period from 1899 to 1955. The data has been converted to a fully-searchable database format, and is available now at http://www.molidorf.com/ships/user/ships_list.php Best regards, --Karen
I have a few questions for your group. I have asked if anyone has information on my grandparents. My grandfather was born in the Banat area (Jabuka, Joguslavia) and his name was George Subin, American spelling. The last name was originally spelled Szubin. No one seems to have any information, however my great grandmother Katalin Pruv got married in September 1920 in Romania to a Larzus Groza, in the US his name was Lasa Grosa. If anyone of you have any information I would love to know. I can find all sorts of information in the US but nothing before they came here. Hi Cathy I have the book Auswanderung nach Ungarn und den österr. Erbländern im 18. Jahrhundert in my library. The originally book was printed in Vienna 1941, but I have a reprinted version from the year 1984 ... The big expert on Banat music is Franz Metz who writes articles, appearing from time to time in the Banater Post. Almost every Heimatbuch will have a chapter on the local music Kapella and choir. Some Banat localities were especially know for their Music Kapella and if memory serves the ones from Billed and Kl Betschkerek and perhaps others made tours about Europe and North America. These were relatively wealthy villages and could afford instruments and moreover, had one or more directors which devoted their time to fostering music in the locality. You might check the Baltimore newspapers for the week following 4 Jul 1914 , especially the German language ones, for articles on the Saengerfest. I have been researching my family history for some years now and have only recently tried to untangle the German side of the family. When we sold my gram's house two summers ago, we cleaned out the attic and found many items from the past that we did not know even existed. Apparently, when my grandfather first married my grandmom, all this stuff was put up there and left that way as his parents had passed on and sadly, he would pass on in about 12 years time. This was in the 1940's. When I think how we almost sold the house without going in the crawl space! Thank you for all your work, it has helped immensely. The reason I am writing to you is that we seem to have large portraits of a mens choirs called the Banater Maennerchor. We think we can pick out a few of our relatives. We also have a large portrait of what looks like a huge banquet picture taken, but we can't tell what it is. Since we found them together, we think they are of the same people and time frame. I was wondering if you knew of anything with this. My mom has the pictures, but I would be glad to get a copy of them and email them for you. I do know one was taken at Vereinigte Arbeiter Gesangvereinen von Nord-Ost Staaten Sängerfest in Baltimore, MD. on July 4th, 1914 as its written on the picture in the white pencil they used back then. -- Dawn Marshall DawnMarshall73@gmail.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BANAT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

The authorities did not want a lot of people piling up at ports of departure who had gotten that far and then couldn't pass the health examination just before boarding the ship. This was certainly a complaint on the part of the Hungarian government who had to deal with some of their nationals who were destitute in Hamburg or Bremen. You might check the Baltimore newspapers for the week following 4 Jul 1914 , especially the German language ones, for articles on the Saengerfest. If you can identify the village that is associated with the people in your photos then certainly the respective HOG would like to have a copy that they might publish in their Heimatblatt.
I asked my grandparents why the Barbie's left Hungary and I was told that my great-great grandfather was concerned about war and didn't want his children to have to go to war or be forced to join the military. My family left Hungary in the 1890's and mandatory service of 2 years was implemented in 1903. I heard that either my great grandfather or great-great grandfather had been called to serve in the military after they had moved to the United States. I was told that the request had been thrown away. I'm also not sure if that request came as a result of the mandatory 2 years of service or if it was for WWI. I'm not sure if there is any information to back up the reason I was given but I would be interested to hear if anyone knows anything more on the subject. Does anyone know if it is possible to locate a copy of the letter sent by the military? My families emigrated from Pankota and Ujpanat (Neupanat) in 1903-1908? (Pfau, Plennert, Schmidt, Freisinger, Hauptman, Reznicsek, Doran, Engel, et al).? What were the reasons others have found that their ancestors left for America. I also have another question - my ancestor came to America in 1903 at the age of 24.? I am told he started playing the cornet at age 9 and played in the Kaiser's band.? How would a man living in the Banat come to play in the Kaiser's band?? Does anyone know of a resource where I could find information on this fact? Vicki; Since the band uniforms tended to look like military unifomrs I suspect, unless you know differently, that your photo is a village band. Dawn; There is much interest (on the part of others) on Banat music matters. It is not clear from your message if the picture you have is taken in America or in the Banat.
