Hi Gunter, We are on the same wave length.  I have always thought that it was possible that Leonhard’s family had settled in Hungary in the early part of the 18th century - particularly since Leonhard did not pass through Vienna.  I know that there were Catholic Teufels in Neudorf, Apathin, Filipowa, and Veprod, but so far I have found no connection between these lines and my own Mercydorf Teufel line.  I have been aware of Franz Teufel’s work for a while, and I have been in touch with a German researcher who is in the same family tree as Herr Teufel.   We have exchanged information, but so far, we cannot prove a link between our two lines.  I would click my heels if we could.  I certainly have been playing Sherlock Holmes for many years, and it is time that the mystery is solved. The settler Georg Teufel and his wife had children born in Germany  in 1723, 1725, 1726, 1727, 1729, and 1730 before they moved to Dorog (Kisdorog), in Tolna County in Hungary.  The couple had another child born in Hungary in 1742 and yet another in 1743.   It is almost certain that Georg and his wife had other children born between 1730 and 1742, but there are no records for these births.  The baptismal records for children born in Kisdorog were entered into the Tevel records, and it appears that the records are missing. Since my Leonhard was born circa 1741, his birth falls in this missing time period - a devil of a dilemma.  Without those records for the early years, we have no way of knowing if my Leonhard is part of Georg’s family. My fellow researcher says he spoke to a priest at the Tevel church who confirmed that there were  no records for this time period.   Henry Fischer has told me that the church in Tevel was built in the 1720's, and he said that the Tevel book does not indicate that records are missing. I am going to see if I can find out who was recruiting in the area between 1756 and 1763 and take out the microfilm for those regiments in the hopes of finding a Teufel name.  That is the only way I can think of to see if my Leonhard  was a member of this Teufel Kisdorog family.  I do have other leads to follow too. The Ulmbach family book makes reference to a Teufel family from Arad in the 1760's.  This is the same time period in which my Leonhard emigrated.  There is a Teufel family in the Sanktanna family book too.  Dave’s military book shows Teufels in Arad Sanktmartin in the 1830's.  The Teufels in Arad county could be related to my Teufels, and after the Kisdorog Teufels, they are my most likely prospects. The Teufels in Orczydorf and the Teufel in Blumenthal emigrated much later than my Leonhard, and I see no relationship at this point.  I cannot figure out where the Teufel who shows up in the Hatzfeld book fits in. There is also a possibility that a Derfl in the NB family book could be a Teufl/Deufl, and that fellow came from Bohemia. Hans Grimm has been helping me with this line. I do appreciate the new information on the housing maps, Gunter, and I am happy to receive confirmation that the Kisdorog Teufels are worth studying.   Sincerely, Cathy Teufel O’Neill

Cathy, I assume that the 1774 list came from a landowner map with the names of the owners - there was no reason to write the origin there, at that time everybody knew were these owners were from. Even census lists seldom give informations about birth places. Only 150 years later Reiser tried to find the origin because nobody before made some notice about it. Maybe Leonhard Teufel did not arrive directly from Germany but from another place in Hungary where he arrived earlier. Our former AKdFF member Franz Teufel was born in Mágocs/Hungary - he wrote a family book and found several Teufel emigrants from Gunningen/Black Forest who arrived after 1730 in the Schwabische Tuerkei. Hi Cathy, I am happy to own a copy of the article of Georg Reiser. It is a follow up of the article of Georg Reiser "Wandlungen der Ortschaft Mercydorf" In: Neue Heimatblätter 1 (1935/36, S. 97-114. The text of 1941 is a list (in text form) of 191 settlers ordered by the former house #. The given informations are compiled from different sources mostly from the state archive in Budapest. Places of origin were extracted from the Mercydorf parish books or Wilhelm&Kallbrunner. Entry für #55: Leonhardt Teufel (Teufel), 1/2 (Bauer); unbestimmter Herkunft = origin unknown. It seems as most of the names and sizes of landownership is from were taken from a map of Mercydorf: "Beschreibung des Plans von dem Teutschen Orth Mercydorf". (1774) Staatsarchiv Budapest.
