Hello fellow Banaters! Once again I have another favor to ask of all you . . . My 94 year old grandfather has been wishing for two things my Nana use to make that were his favorites. when she passed away 15 years ago - sadly - the recipes went with her as she never wrote any of them down . . . One he calls Milk Bread: He describes it as sweet, melts in your mouth and is braided . . . the other is, and I know I won't spell it right but will try with sound: Grappa - this is a dough that is made into a doughnut that is fried in a pan - when finished she would sprinkle sugar ontop. I would appreciate any help you can offer! Laura McCollum _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. Hi Rosina: Dr. de Zayas also spoke at the University of Waterloo on Monday, March 22. The professor who introduced him said he initially thought the lecture hall that was booked would be too large. As it turned out, all 200 seats were filled and more chairs were brought in for people standing at the back. There were some German studies students but much of the audience consisted of local people who were victims of the expulsions. Here's a link to the article that appeared the day of the event. http://news.therecord.com/article/687051 Kathy Plourde ----- Original Message ----- From: <banat-request@rootsweb.com> To: <banat@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2010 3:02 AM Subject: BANAT Digest, Vol 5, Issue 86 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. George, Karl Barak 1873 was Peter B 1881 brother. In the FB Deutsch Zerne there is an slight glitch in the fact they listed 2 Peters with birthdays a week apart. One was listed June 9 and as a brother to Karl. My Grandfather listed as June 15 and not connected to Karl's family. On a personal basis, I know Karl's boys Frank, Joe and Steve were my Dad's cousins and lifelong buddies. I have to disagree with the FB and put my GF Peter into the Wenzel Barak family and connect him with 10 other siblings and list the birthdays as alternate information in my family tree. I knew Kiefers in Chicago, but they were not connected to my family. Are you going to Mt Angel this year? We just received an urgent request for help from the Donauschwaben Museum in Böchingen, Germany by Reinhold Walter, whose translated letter follows: Dear Lands-people, More than 40 years ago the Danube Swabian Homeland museum „Haus der Südostdeutschen“ was erected in Böchingen, Germany, under the supervision of the teacher Theodor Walter formerly of Sekitsch, Batschka. (www.haus-der-suedostdeutschen.de). The original building and an addition in 1971 was fully built by the fellow Landsmen themselves. It was financed by contributions of other Landsmen around the globe. Today one can't find Lands-people for the necessary repairs any more and everything has to be contracted out. The wind and wetter as well as the years are having their ways with the homeland museum in Böchingen. The main building has to be completely renovated, as the ceiling of the hall is crumbling, the windows are leaking and the furnace need to be replaced, and most of all the flat roof of the addition is leaking, so that the water is penetrating the exhibition room and makes mildew bloom on the walls. The museum's administration is forced to choose between closing the museum or come up with the necessary funds to at least renovate the flat roof, which would bear the cost of Euros 12,000. The community of Böchingen will contribute to it, and the Sparkasse Südliche Weinstraße (bank) did so already. In order to have additional funds for the renovation expenses available almost Euros 8,000 are still needed. One has to know that the funds for the upkeep of the museum are solely coming from individual contributions, the entrance fees and the hall rentals. It is this grave situation which prompts me to ask you, dear landspeople to help the Homeland-museum and that in turn will benefit our history. Please have a look at our homepage www.haus-der-suedostdeutschen.de where you will be able to see parts of our museum if you have not visited Böchingen yet. Please help out so that in the future the history of Donauschwaben can be shown, the way they lived, their live styles and bearing witness to their expulsion. Your help, be it financial or via a local company or with your visit to Böchingen www.boechingen.de will be a good deed in respect to our old homeland, which never should be forgotten. . Hello Val, I don't know if this will help you in any way .... but information can always be tucked away for future use. I have a paternal aunt who married into our family. Her name was Anna Lamprecht. She had a brother Joseph who also emigrated into New York City -- not sure of the exact date but she married into the family somewhere in the 1930's -- exact date I can look up later. She was one of about 13 children. She came from Germany -- a small town called (sounded like) Beffendorf. Her father was the mayor when she was child. I've been meaning to get more information from my cousin (Anna's daughter) and still don't know how much information my cousin has. Just thought you might like to know the origin of one of the Lamprecht's. Take care.
