My Great Grandfather and Grandfather came from Modosch. My Great Grandfather is Carl Rettinger. He came over to Ellis Island in 1910. My Grandfather, Johann Rettinger, came over in 1922 to Ellis Island and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The rest of the Rettinger clan came over to the U.S. and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. Does this ring a bell to anyone? Johann was born in Cavos, Yugoslavia in 1890. He was a baker. His father, Carl, was a furrier. Hello All, So I have a few basic questions that I'm not sure if anyone can help me with? I'm wondering if there are any other records that are accessible that would provide information on the families that lived in Setschanfeld? I've been through the church records of the surrounding towns, but I was wondering if there were any other records available? I figured some records must have been created when people bought land, for sure, but have no idea where those records would be of it they are even accessible? Or maybe newspapers? I don't know if the small towns would have had newspapers, but maybe? And I know they did a census in 1828, but does anyone know if they ever did another one after that? I can't think what other records would have been available, so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone has ever had any luck in finding other records. Thanks so much! Amy

Hello cousins, I am wondering if any of you have connections with Weber's who emigrated to Chicago. Fran and I are trying to find grandchildren and great-grandhildren of Nikolaus and Anna Weber both of Deutsch-Zerne. We are trying to put together the family jigsaw puzzle only partially assembled because of the D-Z Familienbuch. Hi Charles,      Are you referring to Jean Arnau/Arnan/Arnon who married Marguerite Collat in Mercydorf  on !2 Feb 1771?  According the Mercydorf village tree (early family book) I have constructed, he died on 7 Mar 1771 at the age of 22.  His wife then married Pierre Petitjean on 6 May 1771 in Mercydorf.  According to the information in the early Mercydorf records, he lived in Neubeshenowa.  Are you sure he was from Arracourt?  I did not find that in the records.  If this is your fellow, I will take another look at the pages. My father, John Schoenherr, passed away on April 8. He was a great artist, father and husband. He was also half Donauschwaben. His mother was born Franziska Braun in Rudna in 1896 and emigrated to the US in 1914. Her parents, Nikolaus Braun (1860-1941) of Stefansfeld and Anna Toma (1865-1937) of Kathreinfeld, stayed on in the Banat, finally settling on a farm in Tschakowa. As my grandfather was away at sea for long stretches, my father's character was largely shaped by his mother. I never met her, but Dad used to recall how warm-hearted, enthusiastic, and encouraging she was. He also remembered the poppy-seed strudel she made and how she had taught him English by reading the Sunday comics to him. I only began to research my father's ancestry a few years ago, but I'm grateful that I was able to share with him much of what I learned. My mother-in-law, Katharina Antis, nee Frieden was a native of Setchanfeld. I do have a hand drawn map of the town showing where the families lived before WWII. Hello All, I was sitting here toying with the idea of hosting a website for the village of Setschanfeld and was just wondering how many people there are on this list that have family from that village? I've never seen another site specifically from Setschanfeld and have really gathered a lot of information about it. But I also know that there are others on this list that have more information than I do and was hoping to pick your brains for ideas of what to put on there and if there are some who would contribute information to the site? Thanks for your reply! I googled Ahnenpass, and the format seems to be different. Did it change over time? The format of this document is: for each couple, male birth information on the top left, female birth information on the top right, marriage information goes across both pages in one long band in the middle of the page, male death information on the bottom left, and female death information on the bottom right. I'm hesitant to post scans, although everyone named on these pages has died, partly because I'm not a direct descendant and haven't asked a descendant's permission to post (we've lost touch with them). This is my first message to the list - I've been reading the archives for a while but not seen much about my great-grandparents' origin (Monyoród, along with Szederkény/Surgetin and Máriakéménd/Kemend, in Baranya county). My family has Xeroxes of a few pages of a document from my grandmother's cousin's branch, which came over separately (and later) than my grandmother's parents did in 1911. The pages are numbered, as if they come from a booklet, which appears to contain the immediate ancestry of grandma's cousin. I want to know what kind of book this is. Let me describe it. Pages 16 & 17, titled at the top "Eltern", have the birth, marriage and death information for grandma's cousin's parents. The pages consist of printed forms that have been filled out by hand, including some places where several alternatives are given for all but one to be struck out. The birth and marriage entries are signed by the Kirchenbuchführer (name illegible), and stamped with a circular stamp containing the word "Salzburg" in the middle, with what appears to be "Enang. Pfarramt G.B." (or perhaps two other capital letters) around the outside. The death information was written in later in another hand, and is not stamped (and they died in the US, so perhaps those entries were added by my relatives?). One part of the document which confuses me are the separate entries for "Geburtsort" and "Geburtseinte". The first is apparently birthplace; what is the Geburtseinte? Pages 18 and 19 are titled "Großeltern a) väterlicherseits", and concern the people I believe to be my gr-gr-grandparents. They likewise have birth and marriage information written in the same hand as before, signed by the same person as before, and with the same stamp; and death information, unstamped, in another hand (though this time they died in Monyoród). We also have the pages for the maternal grandparents, but I don't have a copy here to confirm which page numbers it occupied. So, does this species of book have a name? Thank you Eve. Well, I just may find some 'relatives' in this area somewhere down the road. I will keep these village names in mind. I guess there is always that possibility that Amalia/Emalie was not her first name. My best chance here is to find info in Kowatschi/Covaci.....perhaps a marriage record or info on the baptisms for her children. Or a death record of her husband Friedrich Bautz/Pautz. Of course there is no book for Kowatschi. I've not found any info on them in St. Andreas or Jahrmarkt which I know were filial parishes. So I'm guessing Kowatschi had its own church at this time. Friedrich and Emalia raised their family in Kowatschi. She later (aft. W.W I) lived with daughter and son-in-law Louisa and Stefan Horvath. Do not know if in Kowatschi. She died 1943 or 1948 (two branches of fam have diff date. I have '43 taken from the insurance quellen). They were Catholic.
