Does anyone know, when writing to Mr. Hengl, if I can write in English or should get it translated into German? And with a request for information/ prices, should I include something toward the cost of return postage? Paul Kampf, are you still on the Banat mailing list? The email address I have for you is apparently not current. Please email me. I may have some information for you. Fran Matkovich
>JANKO is not a German name. There are many Jankós in Hungary. Jankó is a nickname for János which is Johann in German, John in English. >"n Tottn (or Lottn?) Bais" Read correctly: Cottin Bács - Bács county Boglárka
Hello Amy, There is a JANKO family in Tschonopel (today Csonoplya) in the Batschka, in today's Vojvodina, Serbia, but no Nicolaus. But perhaps it is the correct place and the correct family anyway. JANKO Friedrich oo 07.01.1794 KRAUTZ Margaretha Ki: 1) Margaretha * 11.08.1802 2) Balthasar * 16.04.1805 3) Katharina * 29.02.1808 4) Theresia * 19.08.1810 5) Josef * 09.03.1813 It seems as if they were somewhere else between 1795 and 1801, unfortunately. JANKO is not a German name. This is mixed marriage in terms of ethnicity. There may be more JANKO families in this village, but they would only be listed if the name of a spouse "sounded" German, and so does KRAUTZ that may be misspelled for "KRAUSS". "n Tottn (or Lottn?) Bais" does not say anything to me, except that "Bais" could be "Bacs" and this is Hungarian for "Batschka". The original records for Tschonopel are finally available at the Sombor Archive for review. No "Mormon" film exists for this period, only the duplicates from 1826 could be photographed then. Hope this helps a little bit further. Hello All, I am looking at the marriage (2nd) and burial record for a Nikolaus Janko (born bet. 1797-1800), who died in Setschanfeld in 1862, but I can't figure out where his originating location was and was hoping it may look familiar to someone else? His marriage record in 1858 to Magdalena Roth (he was married first to Sussanna Prunkl from Ernsthausen) recorded that he was from Csanpohya (or Csanpolya). His burial record in 1862 recorded that he was from Schanopel n Tottn (or Lottn?) Bais I've been sitting here trying to find these locations, but nothing is coming up that is even close. Would this look familiar to anyone? Thank you so much! Amy

The Otsego County Library will feature Spaltensperger’s new book at a reception to be held Thursday, Dec. 10, at noon in the library’s meeting room. “Voices From the Graves Still Follow Me” describes a little known episode in European history, the genocide of ethnic Germans in Yugoslavia immediately following World War II. Many ethnic Germans, like Spaltensperger’s family, had lived in Yugoslavia for generations. After the war, though, Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito sought to cleanse his country of all Germans. At the age of 6, Betty Spaltensperger and the other German families in her hometown of Prigrevica Svetu Ivan, Yugoslavia, were put into a Communist concentration camp set up by President Tito. For the next two years, Spaltensperger, her family and other fellow Germans struggled to survive under circumstances of extreme deprivation. Descriptions of these events and how Spaltensperger and her family came to the United States fill the pages of “Voices from the Graves Still Follow Me.” Reception attendees will meet Spaltensperger and hear her extraordinary stories first hand. This event is free and open to everyone. Books will be available for purchase at the reception and refreshments will be provided. George; No, there is additional information. Anna Rollinger is listed as the spouse of Lorenz Horvath and they were married(according to this entry) in 1856. One child is listed, Anna *1867 Krivabara, +30 Apr 1891 Josefsdorf. This data is in the IGI and was submitted by a(unnamed) member of the LDS church. This appears to be correct because the Josefsdorf KBs(copies of which I have in my possession) list Anna Horvath, dau of Lorenz Horvath and Anna Rollinger *1867 Georgshausen +30 Apr 1891 Josefsdorf oo 23 Nov 1884 Josefsdorf Ehrenwerth(Erwert) Johann 5 kids born to this first marriage in Josefsdorf. Hello Tolna Researchers, Thanks to Heiner Friedrich of Germany we now have the list of settlers in the county of Tolna in the year of 1725. That year Pastor Reichard arrived in Varsad and the filial Kalazno from Langenfeld in Banat. Please see '1725 Tolna Lutheran Settlers' on www.hrastovac.net pages via the 'Bulletin Board'. Greetings from Vancouver Island, Rosina
