    3. Hello, I was wondering if someone with the Klein Betschkerek family book would do a look-up for me.  I have been tracing the line of Anton Machalek *1820 in Ebendorf.  According to the Darowa family book, Anton married his first wife Rosalia Schauer *~1826 Gyor in Darowa in 1844.  They had at least two sons born in Darowa, but it might have been possible that they had more children elsewhere.  Rosalia died (death date and place unknown).  Anton then marries Barbara Martin *7 Apr 1828 in Darowa.  They have at least one son (Christoph) in Darowa, but I suspect that they might have other children.  There are no other references to the family in the Darowa records, so they obviously moved elsewhere. I just found something online indicating that Barbara died in Klein Betschkerek.  The information online showed: MACHALEK Anton oo um.1840 MARTIN Barbara* um.1817 Darowa/Banat † 22.09.1856 Klein-Betschkerek/Banat. The dates of birth and marriage are not consistent with the Darowa book, but I do think this is the Anton I have been seeking.  He would have been 36 at the time of Barbara's death, so it is likely that he married again.  I was wondering if there was any other information about Anton and his family in Klein-Betschkerek or the surrounding villages. Hans Grimm Jr. found a death record for Anton's son Ferdinand in Neubeschenowa in 1873, so members of the family stayed in the area. Ultimately, I am hoping to find a link between this family and the Machalek family from Gross Betschkerek/Lazarfeld who emigrated to Canada.  Michael Machalek * circa 1849 place unknown, a resident of Lazarfeld/Gross Betschkerek,  did marry a woman named Juliana who came from Marienfeld, and I thought that, perhaps, Michael was living in or around Klein Betschkerek when he married Juliana of Marienfeld.  If so, he might be a member of Anton's family. I would appreciate any help I can get with respect to this line. Thanks, Cathy Teufel O'Neill

    3. No experience here, but I love your idea. I do question whether it would be necessary to have the same publisher for both continents. I would think two publishers would work just as well as one, provided one cannot be found that operates in both continents. - Cliff -----Original Message----- From: banat-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:banat-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dave Dreyer Sent: Tuesday, May 18, 2010 1:07 PM To: Banat List Subject: [BANAT-L] Print on demand publishing I am looking for comments and advise on print on demand publishing. As many list subscribers who have ordered family books know, postage rates to and from Germany have risen dramatically in the last few years so that postage costs in transatlantic shipping amounts to about half the price of the book. In some ways it is kinda dumb to be shipping all this paper back and forth across the ocean when it is so easy to send digital files. I do not want this conservation to degenerate into CD vs published books but would like to keep it focused on the distribution of published books. In the past year or so I have seen some quite good quality print on demand books. The question is in my mind is does anyone know of a print on demand publisher who has facilities to simultaneously publish books both in the US and in Europe(preferentially Germany)? This would allow the distribution of books in such a way as only domestic postage costs would be necessary. Print on demand has other advantages as well and family books would stay in print. Has anyone ! any experience with such a publisher or other comments? 1. [BANAT-L] GESTRICH and WAGNER in Hatzfeld
    2. Marilyn Fedewa
    3. Dear Listers, After a recent inquiry to the List, Fran Matkovich kindly sent to me the GESTRICH entries in the Hatzfeld book. In consulting Fran afterwards, we decided to pose the following to the List. I have been trying to find a connection between my 4g-grandmother, Gertrud GESTRICH (oo Peter CHRIST, #1472) and the other Gestrich's of Hatzfeld. At the end of this message, I will paste the listings that puzzle me, and hope someone might help me to figure it out, if at all possible, with extreme apologies if I'm missing something obvious. In studying Johann Zaver GESTRICH, #s 3098 and 3100, it seems that he married his first wife in Drolshagen, and his second wife in Hatzfeld. But then I see #3099, Franz Xaver GESTRICH with the exact same birth date and death date as Johan Zaver-G. Yet, based on his immediate family info, he / 3009 seems to be an entirely different person. So I am wondering if he could be a twin, which would explain the birth date, but it seems too coincidental to also die on the same day. Or, I suppose just human error. But I find myself wondering if it's possible that Franz-X is real, and if so, might he have had an earlier child in Drolshagen (my 4g-gr Gertrud) who just didn't get connected to him in the records? I understand that the info at hand might not yield an answer on this, but I'm just thinking about whether to try to research this possibility further at some point. (Parenthetically, I am including the listing at the end for Gertrud's second husband, Nikolaus WAGNER, in case there might be some links to Wagners among the List). Many thanks from Marilyn, and here are the listings: 1472 CHRIST, Peter * um. .1760 in "Womerad Baden." + 06.01.1800 in Hf 8 05.05.1789 in Hf GESTRICH, Gertrud weitere Ehe(n) <12746> * 05.05.1769 in Drolshagen,Sauerland Kind(er) a) Johann Xaver t 15.01.1790 Hf + 02.02.1827 in Hf Ehe siehe <1473> b) Johann Peter t 16.10.1791 Hf c) Barbara t 29.06.1794 Hf d) Heinrich t 24.12.1796 Hf e) Anna Maria t 26.02.1799 Hf 3098 GESTRICH, Johann Xaver * 13.12.1739 in Drolshagen + 23.08.1807 in Hf Eltern:Johann Gastrich-Elisabth Schürholt. 3. Hi Marcia, Thank you for your responding to my posting. I am sending this to the entire list because I thought there might be others who would be interested in the information about David Kemle's website and books. David Kemle's website is: www.kiemle-kemle.net/mramorakchurchbooks.html It is a great website because he as the church book available so people can search it - obviously the main focus is on Mramorak but there are also Franzfeld marriages listed. His two other books are a Mramorak picture book and a historical book. His two books are available for purchase directly from him for $50. Information on ordering them are on his website. I can't wait until they arrive. It sounds like the book you mentioned may be helpful to me as well. Would you mind sharing where the title, where it can be purchased, and the cost? If you are willing to look anything up for me I would really appreciate it. Andreas Kaschuba (born 1813 in ??, died 10 Feb 1853 in Mramorak). The Mramorak church books say Andreas is from Franzfeld. He married Magdalena Wagner (no dates or locations) His son Adam married Katharina in Franzfeld -she was born in Mramorak and was the daughter of Peter Bert (no dates or locations) and Christina born Dapper (no dates or locations) Peter is the son of Daniel Bert (no dates or locations). Christina is the daughter of Nikolaus Dapper (no dates or locations). So, I wonder if there is information on Andreas Kaschuba, Magdalena Wagner, Katharina Bert, Peter Bert, Christina Dapper, Nikolaus Dapper in Franzfeld? My great grandmother immigrated from Mramorak to the USA and settled in Baltimore. Her brother went on to Mansfield, Ohio. They were Kaschuba's and I still have a number of cousins (I have recently discovered) who are still there. My grandfather use to go to Mansfield to visit them but there was no contact until I found them about a month ago! Thanks for your help. Karen

    2. Welcome to the List, Karen, my maternal (HALLABRIN) and paternal grandparents (WAGENHALS) came from Franzfeld, Austria-Hungary--1907 and 1913 respectively. I have a copy of the book FRANZFELD (Franzfeld Im Banat)--1792-1945. It is a Heimatbuch: Book of local history and geography It is in German. It has an index of names under different categories. Just browsing through, I do see your name KASCHUBA. If you don't have this book already, perhaps I could be of help by checking for your names. You sound like you have gone a lot further than I have in your research. You mentioned "David Kemle's books." I wonder if these would be helpful to me. Could you tell me about them? What are the titles? Where would I purchase them? What is the cost? I'm also wondering about Franzfeld church books as well. I know I will never be able make the trip to Franzfeld; so my research is mostly through family, the Banat List, Ancestry.com, and the Internet. Do you have any relatives in Mansfield, Ohio? Both sets of my grandparents and my maternal great grandparents moved to Mansfield from Franzfeld. There are several families in Mansfield that made the move from Franzfeld. Best wishes to you in your research. Marcia Fay (WAGENHALS) Cobb (Formerly of Mansfield, Ohio) Newberg, Oregon In a message dated 5/16/2010 12:07:34 A.M. 1. [BANAT-L] Neuburg a d. Bega FB Aurelheim Lookup SELTSAM
    2. I am new to the list and hope that I am following proper protocol in asking for help.  I have hit that "brick wall" in researching the Seltsam family, it doesn't seem to be a common surname, from what I understand seltsam mean strange or queer in German, maybe thats why?  Anyways here is the information that I have. Jozef Seltsam born abt 1857 married Anna Straki born abt 1867, she was from Aurelheim (her mothers name was possibly Karolina).  According to Jozef's passenger list information he was not from Aurelheim, the village is listed as Dlck?  There were three children, Mathias Seltsam born 1883, Georg Marc Seltsam born 1891 and Anna Seltsam born1903.  Anna Straki had a son Nikolaus Straki born 1887.  I believe this was a second marriage for both Jozef and Anna.  George Seltsam, my great grandfather and Nikolaus Staki immagrated to Wyandotte, Michigan and afterwards rest of family came there. Any help is so greatly appreciated!  Thanks. Dar

    3. Congrtulations to the Austrian Donauschwaebischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft (DAG) for preparing to go to the European Parliament with their support that Croatia and Serbia be taken into EU. At the same time they rightfully insist that both governments must repay the confiscated assets they took from their ethnic German citizen in order to be taken into EU. Rightfully so! We wish them success! Rosina www.hrastovac.net

    3. Hello to everyone, The first memorial to the Danube Swabians of Croatia will be formally opened this Saturday, May 15th 2010 in the chapel of St. Rochus in Valpovo. At one time Valpovo was also one of the bigger Tito's starvation camps for the Donauschwaben where untold of our people perished. It is good to see the new winds of change! Rosina www.hrastovac.net
