Roy; Visas were not required for immigrants fram Austria Hungary to the U. S. before the First World War when leaving from a North Sea Port. All one needed was to buy a ticket and make a reservation with a local shipping representative. As I recall passage was around $15-20. You can check costs by looking at ads in any newspaper of the time which was read by immigrants. Just like the travel section of todays newspaper. My great grandfather emigrated from Kudritz in 1904. They sailed from Bremen on the SS Necker to Baltimore, where they settled. His wife followed a year later with their children. They made two return trips before to 1929, I assume for visits I am writing a family history, and I was wondering about the following: I assume they would have traveled to Bucharest (probably by wagon) to get a visa. >From there to Bremen by train. Does anyone know the distance? or average fare? Does anyone know the cost of various class tickets to America? Many thanks Roy Shiflet, Laurel, MD
Distance to Kudritz-Belgrade is approximately 100 km, or 67 miles. Direct distance Belgrade-Bremen about 1500 km, or about 1000 miles. You'd have to find out what rail connections would have been used in 1920s to get actual distance traveled from Belgrade. Hello Mt. Angel Travelers, Your Mt. Angel team is working diligently behind the scenes, and that is the reason there are no steady updates on our upcoming 10th (!!!) DS conference in September 16-19th. Dave Dreyer is working on that Family Book while Henry Fischer hopes to have the last of his Trilogy published by September. Glen Schwartz and Ray Borshowa are on their way home from visiting not only Banat but also Hofbräuhaus in Munich and we shall hear all about it in Mt. Angel. Karen Preston will gladly accept your book donations: Karen@golden-hills.com Leah Duda is studying all those diverse Strudel fillings and there are still some openings left. Leah has a huge kitchen! Biggest news, though, is that our Webmaster Guru Steve Herold is in the process of moving. From an apartment to a house. From one State to another. Therefore he will be off line for some time, so kindly register now at www.dsheritage.com , while we still have his help if need be. See you all in Mt. Angel! Rosina www.hrastovac.net
Hello! Looking for some help and/or advice. Grandmother, Anna EZSIAS b: 1894 not certain where, immmigrated from Otvosd to Cleve, OH in 1914. Anna had been living with an Aunt, Katalin Hollo ???? (can read the entire last name ) Ellis Island records indicate she came to live with her cousin Katie BERENG. Have researched thanks to Mr. Dreyer, that Katie was Katalan BERENG, wife of Andreas BERENG and mother of Johann BERENG (b: 1902 in Temesvar)and the daugher of Emil MARTON of Temesavar. Katie was born in Mornik (sp ?) May 1880. Have been trying to link the BERENG/MARTON family to my grandmother with no luck. Grandmothers parents were Georg EZSIAS and Rosa DOLSA. Any assistance will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance. Georgi Rolan

Dave- I realize these are more recent than the ROLLINGERs you're looking for, but this might still be useful information. It looks like there were Rollingers in Altkischoda and Varjas in the late 1800s. There are 6 entries for ROLLINGER in the Billed OSB. The three earliest ROLLINGERs in Billed were born in Varjas in 1896 (Franz Rollinger), 1900 (Peter Rollinger), and 1905 (Franz Joh. Rollinger). The Jahrmarkt OSB has one Rollinger entry: R408 Rollinger Wilhelm (Sv. Wilhlm R. u. Barbara Istok) x Altkischoda 16.03.1900 oo Jm. 23.11.1919 Till Marianna (Tv. Johann T. u. Hi all, My husbands DS great-aunt married a man from Igris. They both died a few years ago and we have her effects. I found a monograph that someone may be interested in; if so, please contact me. On the title page it says: Ing. Florea Jebelean 110 ani de la infiintarea CORULUI DIN IGRIS (1892-2002) -pagini monografice- -februarie 2003- Its 25 pages, photocopied, with several photos, and spiral bound. If anyone can recommend a better place to post this, please do. I havent combed through the boxes yet, but I suspect there are quite a few more Romanian things. Our relatives name was Terentin Stoicanescu, also an engineer. I dont know if the author of this monograph was a relative or just a friend. Theres no one left to ask. Thanks, Marce in Pittsburgh Schütz, Thierjung, Kratochwill, Becker
Hello to all, Budaörs in the Ofner Bergland (just west of Budapest) was one of the earliest Danube Swabian settlements on the Pannonian Plain. Its Heimatbuch is now online: http://www.vk-budaors.bibl.hu/Heimatbuch/masodikresz.pdf Even if in German, you will have no trouble finding the first settlers, whose descendants spread all over the Danube Swabian areas. See you all at Mt. Angel, Rosina www.hrastovac.net
