    1. [BANAT-L] German Expelees & Ann Morrison
    2. Rosina T Schmidt
    3. Paul Fromm of cafe@canadafirst.net wrote the following article about Ann Morrison, the producer of The Forgotten Genocide documentary, which will be screened at Mt. Angel September 18th 2010. - Rosina TORONTO. June 25, 2010. American film maker Ann Morrison was in Toronto, June 24-25, filming interviews for an ambitious seven-film series to tell the story of the 16-million Germans ethnically cleansed from their traditional homelands (the Sudetenland, East Prussia, Memeland, Silesia, parts of the Ukraine, parts of Russia, northern Yugoslavia, southern Hungary and western Romania) from 1944 to 1950. Three million of the expellees were murdered; hundreds of thousands were gang raped, a matter of policy by communist Russian soldiers. Mrs. Morrison points out that she's not of German descent but actually grew up in a Polish family and community. Her film making began as a school project at St. Louis Community College. A communications assignment asked her to do an interview with someone in the community with an interesting life story. Chance led her to a Danube Schwabian (Donauschwaben) woman. Mrs. Morrison had never heard of these people who had settled in northern Yugoslavia, southern Hungary and western Romania in the middle of the 18 century after the Turkish invaders had been driven out. Austrian Empress Maria Theresa recruited German farmers to settle and develop the devastated and near empty land. Over the next two centuries, the Danube Schwabians became prosperous farmers and tradesmen. Tito's communists began a mass ethnic cleansing in 1945, killing or expelling nearly half a million ethnic Germans. One woman's story hooked Ann Morrison. Now, she was on an mission. One interview led to another, she told the monthly meeting of the Alternative Forum Friday night.. About 20 per cent of the surviving Danube Schwabians live in the U.S. Midwest, she said. She soon had interviews with 14 survivors and two historians. These interviews were woven together to produce her first film The Forgotten Genocide, which was first screened in St. Louis in February, 2010." It has since been seen in 26 states and 9 foreign countries," she explained. The film's premier screening occurred at the "Forgotten Genocide" conference hosted at St. Louis College in February. Now, Ann Morrison is expanding her focus from the Danube Schwabians to the larger issue of the 16 million German expellees. She visited Toronto to conduct interviews with eight expellees from the Toronto area and a prominent historian. More interviews will follow in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Connecticutt later this year. "College students are not shocked that this ethnic cleansing happened," she said of reaction to her film, " but that they had not been told about it. This was the largest expulsion in human history. Yet, I've been to college history departments and they've never heard of it," she explained. 'I developed a booklist of 285 titles on the expulsions. It's now grown to 678 titles. My college, St. Louis Community College (Meramec) now has one of the largest libraries on the hidden genocide." Ann Morrison hopes to have this film finished by March, 2011. Telling the story of the expellees, she says, "is all consuming. It will probably be my life's work for the next 10-15 years," she told her packed Toronto audience.

    1. Re: [BANAT-L] ? regarding Lenauheim and Alexanderhausen records
    2. Dave Dreyer
    3. Amy; I have spent a couple of hours this evening puzzling over this problem. It appears clear that there are two Johann Diniers, one born in Wiseschdia and one in Bogarosch. I think the simplest explanation is that the Johann Dinier in Alexanderhausen(e.g. the one born in Wiseschdia) had only one marriage----to Margaret Berwanger. Note that the data on Katharina Speicher in the Alexanderhausen family book is rather vague and there are no actual events which ties Katharina Speicher with the Johann Dignier of Alexanderhausenin. One doesn't know what evidence Helene Schuch had to list Kath Speicher as a second wife. The Wiseschdia family book wasn't published at the time that the Alexanderhausen family book came out but she may have based it on Wiseschdia data and since there is no marriage date given it probably came from a note in the comments column of the KB birth record of Johann Dinier which may have been misinterpreted or miss recorded. Unfortunately Katharina Frank died shortly after her Wiseschdia work was published so she can hardly be consulted in this matter Microfilm of the Wiseschdia KBs up to 1852 are available from the FHL. 3. Thank you Rose, For putting our attention to "Money for Freedom" and the Exodus of Romania's German-speaking Minority where through the Lawyer Heinz Guenther Huesch Germany paid some 40 years ago around 500 million Euros to the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu for the privilege of extracting most of 220,000 ethnic Germans still residing in Romania. Not quite 10 years ago there were still 11,000 ethnic Germans (Siebenbuerger Sachsen and Danube Swabians) living there. Many managed later to reach the West via a visit to Budapest, where they applied for immigration visas to who ever wanted them. Some reached the Canadian shores in the last few years, most of them highly educated professionals. Just another part of our Danube Swabian history. See you all in Mt. Angel come September! 1. [BANAT-L] ? regarding Lenauheim and Alexanderhausen records
    2. Amy Nichols
    3. Hello All, I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me if any of the original records for Lenauheim and Alexanderhausen are available to look at or if anyone might have access to them? I think I have a bit of a mess, but I'm not sure and don't know any other way to figure it out without seeing the original records. There were two Johann Dinier's (one born 1828 in Wiseschdia, the son of Kasper Dinier and Katharina Feiler; and the other born 1832 in Bogarosch, son of Johann Dinier and Katharina Wilhelm) that both married women named Katharina Speicher. The Bogarosch Familienbuch gives the marriage date for Johann Dinier, son of Johann Dinier and Katharina Wilhelm, and Katharina Speicher as 13 Sept 1858 in Lenauheim, but gives no other information on them. Johann's first marriage was to Barbara Krupitza. The online versions of the Lenauheim and Alexanderhausen Familienbuchs both give information on Johann Dinier, son of Kasper Dinier and Katharina Feiler. The Alexanderhausen page shows that this Johann was first married to Margaretha Berwanger, and then married second Katharina Speicher. It does not give a specific date for this marriage, but shows it was around 1873 (source?). There is one child, Kasper (born abt. 1860 in Lenauheim), listed for this Johann and Katharina in the Alexanderhausen book and another daughter, Katharina (born abt. 1862 in Lenauheim), in the Lenauheim online book. Because these two Johann's information is so close (both born within 4 years of each other and married women with the same name), it makes me think that maybe some assumptions were made. While I know it was not unheard of for couples to have children before they were married, these two children seem to fit with the first Johann's marriage date and place more so than the second Johann's. I'm really trying to figure out exactly who Kasper Dinier's (abt. 1860) parents actually were. If anyone can tell me if it's possible to access the original records or if there is anyone who has access to them that can check them, I would so appreciate knowing about it! Thank you so much! Amy

I remember buying it in 2000 at the Heimattag der Banater Schwaben. There is a beautiful map entitled "Rum?nien N?rdliches Banat und Arader Land" with bilingual (Romanian & German) names for the once German-populated localities. It was published by the H?fer Verlag (www.hoeferverlag.de) and carries ISBN 978-3-931103-4. I believe that it is also available from landsmannschaft@banater-schwaben.de in Munich for 10.90 Euros (plus packing & shipping). A simpler way of purchasing it was from Mr. Rainer Kapp in the USA. Unfortunately, I changed computers and cannot locate Rainer's address. 3. Save one for me, I am most interested in a map of the Banat. Let me know how much you want for it w/shipping. My email is wateriris@sbcglobal.net. Thank you and easy moving. The detail of the map is very similar to what you can see at http://www.banaters.com/dre/gridmap.asp I am in the process of moving and I expect it will be a week before I provide an actual photo of the map. I've sold over 100 of these maps to a number of people on the list and I believe are quite happy with it. I know of several cases where people have framed them. They come in a mailing tube so they have not been bent, folded, etc. I also will need to re-check the sale price since the postal rates have increased in the last year.... 3. I am familiar with the yellow map that others have recommended. I bought a copy from Steve Herold a few years ago. I had it laminated and it hangs beside my desk. It is very handy. I suspect this is the one Rosina refers to that will be for sale at Mt. Angel. I also have the Northern Banat map referred to by Nick below. It is a 1:200,000 scale, so it is pretty detailed. It is also pretty large (abt 39" x 25"), so you would need a little more wall space. I am a map guy, so I love this map for the detail it shows, but not everyone is that interested in these details. It has the current names and German names of villages. Unfortunately, it only covers the northern Banat down to a Detta/Moritzfeld line. I had the pleasure to meet Guenther Philipp, the man behind this map, in Ulm this past May. He is a charming young gentleman dedicated to preserving his DS heritage. He told me that he hoped to have the southern Banat map ready this autumn. I don't have the contact info for Rainer Kapp either, but you can contact Guenther at guenther_e_philipp@yahoo.de The map was for sale for 10.90 Euros at the Ulm Treffen, but he is charging $22USD or $25 CAD to mail from Germany. I will I will forward a couple of emails to the list that add a little more detail. 3. Peggy, I have a paper version of the map shown at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~romban/map/xymap.html hanging on the wall. I remember buying it in 2000 at the Heimattag der Banater Schwaben. There is a beautiful map entitled "Rumänien Nördliches Banat und Arader Land" with bilingual (Romanian & German) names for the once German-populated localities. It was published by the Höfer Verlag (www.hoeferverlag.de) and carries ISBN 978-3-931103-4.
