    1. [BANAT-L] Mt. Angel/ A question-locations of family origin
    2. C Lines
    3. I want to thank all of you who worked so hard on the Mt. Angel presentations. Thank you so much for posting the videos. The presentations were superb and so helpful, and the videos are treasures. Thank you so much for sharing the hard work and research! I am learning a lot from them! To Pete Modreski- I have Toma/ Thoma/ Dama/ and possibly Damas ancestors in Triebswetter. The names seem to be interchangeable, even within the same documents. "My" Maria Dama was married to Fransciscus Oberding/ Obertin 20/5/1858. Her parents are Nicholas Thoma and Maria Elizabeth Marcaire, also of Triebswetter, however her Thoma grandparents were from Geisselbach or Geisenbach. I can send you the information on those families from Lothar Renard's Triebswetter Familienbuch if it is of interest to you. Best regards, Christine Lines

    3. Peter -- I'm not sure of which maps you have seen but this one seems to be the best one I have used for the Banat. It is a map on a grid -- look on the left side to locate a village which will lead you to the exact location. http://www.banaters.com/dre/gridmap.asp The other good thing is that it can be easily printed for a hands-on reference. My ancestors came from Glogowatz. Prior to that some were in Neupanat/Ujpanat and Sankt Anna. And a few I have found in Arad. If you do a search on the Banat List, you may find other postings about Schag. Or just do a Google Search on the village name, Schag, and any mention of the town will show up. Good luck in finding other Schag descendents. I know that Simon, Michel, and possibly Toma/Thoma show up in Glogowatz. Michel is Joseph b. about 1744 d. 26 September 1826 in Glogowatz Johan Michel married to Katharina Muehlin about 1765; she died 13 May 1827 Glogowatz then he married Elisabeth Schubert. Keep in mind that many lists do a Roll Call at the beginning of the year where people list where their ancestors hailed. You can do a search on the list to see if this has been done. 3. Thanks so much, Dave! I appreciate their children's names that were born in Mollydorf. I was hoping their son, Johann, would show up there. Their daughter, Maria (b 1859), is listed as dying in 1861. They had a daughter, Katharina, that was born in that same date who married in Setschanfeld. So perhaps she was a twin or that date might not be correct. 1. [BANAT-L] a question - locations of family origin of people on the Banat listserv?
    2. Hi, all, and perhaps I will think in terms of directing this message particularly to Rosina, who seems to be somewhat the "organizer" of both this listserv and of the Mt. Angel conference about which we've read so much, As a relatively new person on this listserv (less than a year), I have been curious as to whether anyone has ever attempted to compile any sort of list or map showing just where within the Banat region, the family origins of the members of this listserv, or the attendees at one or more of the past Mt. Angel conferences, are from. Although this listserv has made me aware of one or more good online maps in which Banat towns can be located, as well as the passenger lists of ships on which my family traveled, when I read posts from someone whose family was from a particular town I usually cannot relate to within the whole region this might be, unless I were to look up the specific town name and locate it on a map. I've wondered if some areas within the Banat have more representation that others among the people on this listserv--as to specific towns, or even just as to regions within the parts of the Banat which are now Romania, Hungary, Serbia, etc. Of course, I'm especially interested in finding out whether there are people on the listserv who are from the particular area from which my (mother's side) family originated; the village of Schag, just south of Temeschwar/Timisoara/Temeschburg; the family names are Michl/Michel, Simon, and Toma/Thoma, and they emigrated to the eastern U.S. (Philadelphia and NJ area) and/or Canada in 1906-1908. A map of where people's families were from seems like the sort of thing that might have been done at one of the Mt. Angel conferences--perhaps just by having people stick pins in a map? (Or, perhaps, not!) I would appreciate hearing if anyone is aware of any map or listing of the sort I'm thinking of; and if not, perhaps there might be some interest in and ready way of compiling such a thing? Sincerely, Pete Modreski (mother's name, Michl), Wheat Ridge, CO, pmodreski@aol.com

    3. Hello Amy, the family book of St.Hubert, Charlesville and Soltur give the following information (Nr. 1918): Michael Lambert was born 14.22.1822 in Soltur Nr 70 to Nikolaus Lambert and Margaretha Schulz, he married Maria Klein on 18. October 1847 in Ostern Family book of Ostern says: Witnesses: Nikolaus Lambert and Georg Binder, Klein Maria born about 1822 in Soltur but I am not able to find her in the family book. Also the birth of the son Johann is not recorded in one of the family books. 3. Rosina; The manuscript you picked up at the Mt Angel meeting was a very early draft of a book which Tony Kraemer subsequently expanded and self published as a 317 page bound book in 2008. As I recall, I wrote a review of the book and posted it to the Banat list at that time. You can likely buy a copy of the book from his daughter in Ingelheim. 1. [BANAT-L] Mt. Angel Meeting
    2. Rosina T Schmidt
    3. Dear Dorothy, All of us present at this year's Mt. Angel Treffen were not only delighted that you were able to come all that way from California, but we were also very honoured! Thank you also for bringing that gorgeous kloeppeled table cloth for us to admire. Did you kloeppel it yourself? Here is the URL for David Preston's excellent video presentation of the Treffen: http://www.banatbooks.com/Treffen.htm Hope to see you next year again! Rosina www.hrastovac.net Thanks to all the committee members who worked so hard to make our stay at Mt Angel so enjoyable. The speakers were outstanding, and we learned a lot of history. The streudel was delicious. Thanks to all who offered to help me, and to those that did, it made it very easy for me to get around with my walker. Imagine my surprise when the members sang happy birthday to me as I had just celebrated my 93rd birthday the day before. Thanks for the gift. I met members who I had corresponded with for years, and some were related to my husband. Through them I was brought up to date on some deaths in the family I hadn't heard about even though I was making the family tree on the Wogh and Muelrath families. Hope more members will be able to attend and meet friends and relatives in the years to come. Dorothy Wogh

    3. Anni, That's very interesting and thanks for that information. It would make sense that perhaps Lorenz Horvath might also have been born in Ernsthausen if his mother was from there (although she would have been too old to actually have been born in the village). There is some indication that his wife, Anna Rollinger may have been from that village as well. -----Original Message----- From: Anna Lorenz [mailto:LorenzAnni@gmx.de] Sent: Wednesday, September 29, 2010 7:01 AM To: Amy Nichols; BANAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BANAT-L] Horvath in Grabatz/Kriva Bara Amy, Jakob Korvath who married Elisabeth Taugner was born in Ernsthausen (according to the family book of Dietmar Giel) they had 6 children but no Lorenz Regards Anni > Just one more note on these Horvath's - > > There is a listing for Jakob Horvath in the Lenauheim online book - > http://www.ortsfamilienbuecher.de/famreport.php?ofb=lenauheim&ID=1526&nachna > me=HORVATH&modus=&lang=en > > *Jakob Horvath married Elisabeth Taugner (I'm assuming this is the same > couple as Jakob Horvath and Elisabeth Tanbrier) on 24.05.1835 in > Lenauheim. > There is one son listed for them - Fidelis Horvath born in 1842. There is one son listed for them - Fidelis Horvath born in 1842. I'm not sure if there would be any additional children listed in the actual book. Amy -----Original Message----- From: banat-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:banat-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dave Dreyer Sent: Sunday, September 26, 2010 2:46 PM To: Banat List Subject: [BANAT-L] Horvath in Grabatz/Kriva Bara Amy; According to the Grabatz family book Jakob Horvath apparently was born 2 Aug 1812, son of Johann Horvath and Kath Neurohr. They had 12 kids in Grabatz(no Lorenz), of which 3 died shortly after birth. Of the remaining 9 kids there is only further data on one who apparently moved to Georgshausen. So one must conclude that the remaining 8 kids settled somewhere other than Grabatz------probably somewhere in the Southern Banat where daughter villages were opening up at this time. Four of these 8 kids were sons so the surname would have survived to this extent. Lorenz was born ca 1836 so he could have been the son of Jakob by his first marriage to Elisabeth Tanbrier. From your attachment note that there is a Lorenz Horvath and a Josef Horvath who are witnesses at the second marriage to Anna Beer. Jakob Horvath(*2 Aug 1812 Grabatz) had a brother, Josef, *13 May 1823 Grabatz who moved to Georgshausen. Could the son(Lorenz) have served as a witness to his fathers second marriage? 1. [BANAT-L] St. Hubert and Molidorf Assistance - Lambert
    2. Amy Nichols
    3. Hello All, I am hoping that someone may be able to see if there is any information on a couple from either St. Hubert or Molidorf. Michael Lambert and Maria Anna Klein had four children that lived in Setschanfeld: 1. Johann Lambert - his marriage record states he was from St. Hubert and would have been born between 1848-1853. 2. Josef Lambert - marriage record states he was born in Molidorf around 1853. 3. Nikolaus Lambert - death record states he born in Molidorf around 1855. 4. Katharina Lambert - marriage record states she was born in Molidorf on 13 Aug 1859 If anyone would be willing to look and see if there is any additional information in either the St. Hubert or Molidorf Familienbuch, I would appreciate it so much! I spoke with Johann's great granddaughter yesterday and she is very interested in her family's history. One more note - The son, Johann, was the oldest person in Setschanfeld to die under the Partisans. He was 97 years old when he died in 1945. He was married to Maria Anna Schultz in 1876 and together they lived through the deaths of 9 out of 11 of their children. Together, they raised their two remaining daughters in Setschanfeld until Maria Anna died in 1909. Johann lived the remainder of his life in his home with his daughter and her family. Johann is said to have had the most beautiful fruit trees in all of the village and spent all his time caring for them. When Johann was abt. 97 years old, the Partisans arrived in Setschanfeld. When everyone was required to leave their homes to be interned in another part of the town, Johann refused to leave his home. The Partisans forcibly carried Johann out of his home and put him in a house packed with others from the village. Johann died a short time later and was buried in the animal graveyard. Katharina, one of the two living daughters of Johann and Maria Anna, lost her father ( in Setschanfeld), her sister (in Rudolfsgnad), her brother-in-law (in Heideschutz), her husband (in Setschanfeld), and her son (in the war). She eventually made it out of Yugoslavia to be reunited with her two remaining children - the only family she had left. There are no words. Thanks so much! Amy Nichols

    1. [BANAT-L] More Photos and translation request
    2. Marce Schulz
    3. I've scanned more photos from DS relatives in Butler, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA. Known names and village origins are listed below. Please take a look and see if you recognize anyone. http://picasaweb.google.com/marceschulz/Parison# <http://picasaweb.google.com/marceschulz/Parison> Also, if anyone can help translate the German handwriting on some of the postcards, I'd be so grateful. Scroll down until you see the cards, click to enlarge, and there's a comment space to enter notes. Thanks for looking! I'm hoping to find the "owners" of these photos. 3. Dear Dave et al, Below, I've pasted your and Amy's messages of a couple of weeks ago, regarding Ernsthausen records. Since you do get periodic requests about Ernsthausen, I'm wondering how we might identify ourselves centrally and hopefully get to a critical mass, re funding some retrieval work in Vojvodina? As you suggest, if the cost would be in the $2,000 range, and we could get together 20 or more people, $100 or less per person might be getting into an affordable range. Who it would be who went there is another question on which I'd appreciate your insights. Regards, Marilyn PS, compliments to Rosina Schmidt and Dave Preston, through whose efforts I enjoyed your presentation on the St. Hubert Museum, and look forward to watching the other films as time permits -- especially on strudel! Message: 4 Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2010 09:29:36 -0700 From: "Dave Dreyer" <ddreyer@pacbell.net> Subject: [BANAT-L] Ernsthausen records To: "Banat List" <BANAT-L@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <8448BC6E00F74331B28FBD24B455D745@D99J3Q21> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Amy; I get an inquiry about Ernsthausen research and its records about every month or two. There are a fair number of researchers who are interested in these records. The information that Bruck gives about the location of the Ernsthausen records is essentially correct. I would differ on his comments about the archives. >From what I have heard over the years they are not user friendly and not well organized. It is my understanding that filming of the records with a digital camera is not permitted and that copies cost about a Euro/page. In spite of these obstacles it is likely a determined researcher could get copies of the records. It only makes sense for Ernsthausen researchers coordinate their efforts and attempt to obtain a complete set of the records so that eventually a family book could be written. The birth, marriage and death records 1860-1900 probably amount to ca 1000-1500 pages. Even at $1.00/page the total cost would be about $2000. If this cost were shared among all those interested in the records it would not be a prohibitive amount for any one individual. It only requires an individual who will do what it takes to organize this effort and do what it takes to acquire the records, which may require a trip to Neu Satz and sit in the archives until the records are forthcomi! ng. Dave Dreyer ----- Original Message ----- From: Amy Nichols To: 'Dave Dreyer' Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2010 7:51 PM Subject: Ernsthausen Hi Dave, Since you seem to be so familiar with all the Familienbuchs in the works, I thought I would ask you a question about Ernsthausen, if you don't mind. Twelve years ago Nicholas Bruck sent out the following email to the list: The records for Ernsthausen from 1860 to 1900 are in the archives of the Vojvodina in Novi Sad. The address for these archives is as follows: Pavle Stanojevic, Director Archiv Vojvodine Dunavska Ulitza 35 Novi Sad, Yugoslavia Telephone (38121) 21-244 Fax (38121) 22-332 They have centralized in this archive the catholic church records from the towns where the catholic churches were closed and we really should undertake an effort perhaps via the Mormons to have all these records microfilmed or photocopied. This archive is located in the rear of the building of the Museum of Novi Sad, quite in the Center of this capital city for the Vojvodina. I visited the place last month and Marlog Miroslav, the officer in the archive, explained that we would need to contact the Minister of Culture of the Vojvodina in Novi Sad to get access to these records. The place seems to be well organized and administered and they have both microfilm equipment and photocopy machines. If you still have anybody in Ernsthausen or in other places in Yugoslavia, they can go to these archives and copy out of these books the data you need. Particularly of you know the name and the year of individuals, then this task is considerably simplified. I looked at the site that lists all the Familienbuchs that are being worked on, but did not see anything for Ernsthausen. So I was just curious if you might know if anyone ever was able to microfilm these records or if you've heard anything that might be in the works for this village? I know that the Sartscha book contains some information from Ernsthausen, but that only seems to be a small number of the actual records that seem to be floating somewhere out there. I hope you're having a good night! I know how busy you must be and I really do appreciate all the help you've given me! Amy ------------------------------

    3. Dear Rosina, Thank you so much for making "Our Lost Donauschwaben Children" available on line. It is a heartrending saga, one made all the more personal to me after speaking this week with a man who escaped Ernsthausen in 1946, at age 16. Regards, Marilyn
