    3. After an inactive genealogy period for me, that's welcome news on the Germanic Genealogy Conference. I live in the Twin Cities where it will occur. That might present a good opportunity to reconvene the local Banat contingent for a friendly gathering. I think it has been two years since our last get together. Stasa - If you happen to cross the sea to Minneapolis, there will be free lodging and transportation for you here. If not now, know that you are welcome whenever life permits. Best to all. I found one, but parents are different and the year is 1907. Not sure if the info I was given by relatives is correct. Unfortunately the Famlienbuch Perjamos is not online anymore. 3. You are welcome, Rita! Suknaić sounded familiar, so I have checked my scans from Gospić archive (DAG). I have done a lot of research in Gospić and Karlovac municipalities in Croatia and it appears that Suknaić is a rare family name in Croatia, but most of Suknaić families were from Gospić in 19 century. Earlier than that, according to the Census of Lika and Krbava from 1712 by Karl Kaser, Suknaić families are from the settlements in and around Medak and Pazarište. Of course, today the most of people with that family name are settled in Zagreb which is historical sense of no particular significance since the trend of moving to Zagreb brought all imaginable family names to the capital). I am sure that you have good grounds to investigate further! Stasa helped me search through the old cemeteries, taking photos of tombstones, etc.  He found decent hotels for us to stay at and knew much of the history of the area during the period of our ancestors. Bottom line:  I had a wonderful experience and came home with hundreds of copies of documents relating to my family. No matter how you go or who you hire, enjoy yourself!  Try to visualize how the place was during the time of our ancestors.  At times, I could almost see my grandparents as young children working in the fields or playing in the streets.  It was a trip of a lifetime and one I shall never forget. 3. Hello Bastian, This September my husband and I traveled to Romania to visit his ancestral villages in Timisoara.  It was wonderful and very reasonable.  Romanian currency equaled 25 cents to the dollar in 2016.   We booked a customized tour with Compass Travel. The company created a tour that took us to all of the villages we wanted to see (Schag, Hatzfeld, Perjamosch, Hodoni, and a few others. Then we traveled east to see the German towns like Helmanstadt (Sibiu), Brasov, and ending in Bucharest.  We had a driver/translater/guide who was not a genealogist, but nearly convinced an administrator at the town hall in Schag that he was our adopted grandson.  For George Gordeanu, our guide, nothing was too much trouble to pursue).  He got all of the churches opened for us and got us into the regional Catholic Church records office, where we photographed many family death certificates.  Without a driver/translator, we would never have seen or obtained so much. .::TOURS OF ROMANIA ::. I agree Stoffel sounds like a German name  but Reinhard, in his Triebswetter family books gives a large number of French sounding name equivalents to Stoffel, including Stouflet, Stouffler, stufflet etc.  I expect that they came with a French background they were soon entered in the records with a German equivalent but a lot depended on the background of the clerk.  Reinhard gives the spitzname of the family in this case ?Schmiedschago?.  Is that a clue for German? With your input and information, I have a plan of action and that is starting with a FHL. As it turns out there is one close to me and I plan to visit and try to access the Stader book and/or Banater Akten list. What I am hoping to estavblish is the date and any related information on my paternal grandfather and grandmother four times removed. I know they were born in Alberthausen, Hessen, Germany in 1768 and 1770 respectively and had son in 1789 in  Triebswetter, Timis, Rum?nien.  Their names were Johann Michael Wolf, Maria Ursula Wolf (born Schneider) and son, Josef Adam Wolf. On my maternal side I have the same question. My maternal grandfather, Nikolaus Stoffel four times removed was born in  Mamer, Luxemburg in 1766 and died    in Sackelhausen, Banat on Mar 28 1789. His wife, Susanna Stoffel (born Moll) was born in Ulmbach, Banat, Rum?nien (Peciu Nou) in 1762. So  Nikolaus was not married when he emigrated to the Banat and may not have come through Vienna. A related question is ethnic in that Mamer, Luxemburg was a mix of French and Germans, how can you determine which ethnic group Nikolas Stoffel belonged to? Stoffel is a German name so we have always made that assumption but know nothing else about him. Again, many thanks for your genealogical research. My line dead-ends with a Nicholas Aron/Arrent from Luxembourg, but I was never able to definitively identify the village of "Ritteburg" he was listed as being from. I assumed it was either a poorly transcribed "Bitburg" or maybe nearby Rittersdorf. If these Aron's in Stader were actually from Perle (Lux), maybe they are indeed connected to my line somehow, and maybe Ritteburg was a village near there, lost to history. > > Scott > > ? ? ? 3. Highly recommend Alexandra Irimie. She arranged my entire trip, pick up from plane, hotel, food, drove me around Marienfeld, crossed the Serbian border to Kikinda. Reasonable cost. Very trustworthy. E-mail: contact@timisoaratourguide.com<mailto:contact@timisoaratourguide.com> Web: www.timisoaratourguide.com<http://www.timisoaratourguide.com/> Stasa Cvetkovic also is great. Very experienced in Genealogy as well. John

    3. Another option is Stasa Cvetkovic. He lives in Serbia, but often travels to Romania for genealogical work. synergia@gmail.com Another possibility is Sorin Fortiu. He is very expert in genealogy and history. 3. Hello: Yes, I can highly recommend Stasa Cvetkovic. He was my driver and guide for two weeks as I traveled through Hungary and Romania researching my ancestry in the Banat region. My primary places of interest were Wiesenhaid (Tisa Noua) and Blumenthal (Masloc) but he took me to major cities, knew exactly where the archives were and what docouments to ask for. He helped me with my research at the archives, making charts, etc. to help me organize the data. When we needed some help in Hungary, he called upon another researcher, Rudolf Laszlo, to come with us and help. Rudolf speaks fluent Hungarian and is pretty good at English too. Stasa speaks excellent English and knows some Hungarian and Romanian as well - certainly enough to understand what people were saying to us. 3. Hello fellow list members, I am planning to go and see the cities in the Banat where my grandfather and my ancestors lived (Tschanad, Keglewichhausen, Marienfeld). Does anybody of you already have experience with such a travel? I'm thinking about costs, hotels, a tour guide/driver? I am living in Germany so going to Romania should not be a big problem (probably flying). However, I am not speaking Romanian and I'm also not familiar with the "do-s and don't-s" of such a travel ;) Happy to get any help, ideas and feedback from you. Best regards, Bastian

    3. Hello Bastian, You will probably get additional helpful answers from other members of this email list, but I have a recent experience with travel to the Banat area. Four colleagues and I traveled to Romania in September. We speak almost no Romanian, so we also wanted to hire a driver and tour guide. In the Timisoara area we hired Alexandra Irimie, aka Timisoara Tour Guide. (I believe someone on this list recommended her to us.) We found her to be very helpful. She is not a genealogist per se, but she has experience with the Archives and she speaks many languages. She knows the area well, is reliable, and is a safe driver. She is also a lot of fun, and knows restaurants and other attractions around Timisoara. I can highly recommend her! Prices in Romania are affordable. We hired other guides in Transylvania and in the Maramures area, and I can make a few recommendations in those areas if you are interested. Please feel free to contact me at valbu@comcast.net or info@romaniangenealogy.com.
