    2. Kaden Steinbach
    3. Hello, my name is Kaden Steinbach I am 16. I have always been interested in my familys history. my great grandpa John Steinbach was born in Schuschara in 1923. His parents were Josef and Eva Steinbach, my great grandpa never talked about his dad. I remember meeting my great grandpa only once and that was on his deathbed. I wish he was still around so I could talk to him about our family history. my family was captured by the soviets but later escaped and moved to Braunau. at that point my great great grandpa Josef was no longer with them. I don't know if he was conscripted into the Prinz Eugen and died on the front lines or died in a camp.

    3. Does anyone have access to the Familienbuch Steierdorf? I found this evening on Ancestry.com that they have loaded RC church records for Caraş-Severin County <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cara%C5%9F-Severin_County> and in particular Steierdorf (now called Anina). There is a marriage record in 1857 for an Henricus Svobodnik. My great-grandfather was also named Svobodnik. It is a very rare name in the Banat. I am interested to see what information is available about Henricus Svobodnik in the FB Steierdorf. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Robert Evensen

    1. [BANAT-L] Military Service 1916-1920
    2. Trish Stumpf Garcia
    3. Hello Banat researchers: I have a general question related to military service in the Banat. What were the military service requirements during World War I? Age at enlistment, required service, etc. Hungarian army or Austrian or? Are there any lists or records available to know who served? (not wounded or killed) Ultimately, I would like to find out if my great-grandfather, born 1898 in Kathreinfeld, served in the military. He married in 1917 in Bogarosch, his son was born in 1918, and a daughter in 1921 also in Bogarosch. Thanks in advance. Trish Stumpf Garcia Whittier, Calif.

    1. [BANAT-L] MN Banaters reunion during Germanic Genealogy Conference weekend?
    2. Charlie Tiller
    3. Hello fellow Banaters, Please be sure not to hit reply without checking addresses unless you want the whole Banat list to read your post. I have a Minnesota smile on my face. With the arrival of the big international Germanic Genealogy Conference to the Twin Cities on July 28-30, it seems an ideal time to plan a reunion of the local "club." I believe our last get-together was in summer 2015, and I'm sure others will concur it was a terrific gathering of both D-S and other descendants from the Banat region. I'm sure several folks have traveled to the homeland since then, or at least there may be some neat family research breakthroughs. We would obviously want to plan our less formal event around conference proceedings and probably on that side of town. Last time we met at a nice patio restaurant/bar for an early evening out, but other notions may work just as well. I seem to have lost track of the ds-twincities listserve address. Is there anybody lurking who can reboot the list and get us all reconnected? Steve Herold, you out there? Carol Cincotta? Once we sort that out, I would imagine event planning communications will not take place on the general Banat list. We all have busy enough lives. Warm regards (from an unexpectedly springy Lake Wobegon), Charlie Tiller charlietiller@hotmail.com [Tiller, Kovacs/Schmied, Kampf, Fechter and others in Hatzfeld and D. Zerne environs]

    3. Hello everyone and thanks for your support! I think there is enough time to plan for the accommodation and transportation. I already studied the maps and I feel that I will be fine wherever I am accommodated because I think I can get anywhere in reasonable time by using public transportation or car rental which I also briefly studied. Charlie, I have seen your neighborhood (very nice!) and I realize that you are quite far away from Minneapolis Marriott Northwest Hotel so there is no way that I would waste your time on my transportation to the Conference venue. I can get there in about 1 h 30 min. by public transportation and I am fine with that. I will be slowly working on logistic solutions (with your help, of course), but my main focus at the time are the presentations that I would like to prepare. 3. Charlie, I have known Stasa for over 7 years, and have made 5 trips to Serbia, through the Balkans and Kudritz ( my grandmother's birth place). We have also helped with the restoration of the church. So, I would like to do anything I can do to assist Stasa if he is able to attend. Plans now are to arrive in Minn on Thursday and leave on Sunday. We of course will change our length of stay to accommodate Stasa. Please keep me informed of your plans, I love to b0e invo9lved. 1. [BANAT-L] Banater in Montevideo, Uruguay
    2. Rudolf Hüpfl
    3. Dear list-members, As by an identity card found, there was a Johann Michael Hipfel, * 29 SEP 1909 in Romania who lived 1955 in a suburb of Montevideo, Uruguay. He mentioned his parents as being Michael Hipfel and Katharina H, born Weldi. In my research to identify and connect the Hipfel/Hupfl clan, I was so far unable to locate his home village. Has anybody of you an idea how to connect him with a village or his family; may be via the indicated name of his mother. Where does one find the “Weldi” it is for the first time this name appears with the Hipfel family. There is reasonable guess that he went for Uruguay with other former SS-members after WW2. Best regards Rudolf Hupfl
