The source of death records in 1831 would be confined to newspapers, church records, and tombstones primarily. If your ancestor had a will the main source would be the Maryland State Archives in Maryland. They have the wills by county indexed by surname. If he/she died intestate you should look for an Administrative Account, also at the archives. If you know approximately where he/she lived, you can field search for the grave. Baltimore Co. Historical Society has the records of some cemeteries that were copied.
