    1. Question - Is an Autopsy report considered a Vital Record?
    2. Peggy Coughlan
    3. I have a question for the list. I had a close relative who died and an autopsy was performed on him. My understanding is that it is pretty Graphic and I wonder if this report would be considered a vital record. If the autopsy was performed in Maryland would it offer me any additional details? I have his death record and know his cause of death. I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject. Peggy

    3. No, the autopsy report is not vital record - I think it would be considered part of the Medical Examiner's records. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a good repository for those records. A cousin and I were looking for one from the 1920's and got nowhere. The state archives says that the city archives has them. After trying several numbers, we finally reached the city archives and were informed that they only have a few years of them, and the visiting hours are limited, you must make an appointment, etc. Have you tried the newspaper? In our case, the death (a suicide) was detailed in several newspaper articles. Jodee
