    1. Welsh churches in Canton?
    2. mona everett
    3. Hello! Does anyone know anything about the United Welsh Church that was in Canton? It was established in 1852 in a schoolhouse, with the Rev. Benjamin Davies. A new chapel opened in Jan. 1867. I also found an 1870 mention of "a Welsh house of worship about two miles northeast of the city (Baltimore) near the Canton Copperworks". I am not sure if these are the same church or are two different ones. (Neither is Abbott Memorial, which opened later.) My family arrived in Baltimore from Glamorgan, South Wales, about 1844-5 to work in the copperworks, and I am trying to find out where they worshipped. I would like to know where the records of the Canton-area Welsh churches are (any denomination). Thanks for any help or suggestions. Mona Everett

    3. Mona, There is a Canton Time Line http://www.cantoncommunity.org/welcome/neighborhood/canton_timeline.html Your church is not mentioned directly. I also found an 1870 mention of "a Welsh house of worship about two miles northeast of the city (Baltimore) near the Canton Copperworks". The timeline abstracted has the following information: In 1847 Canton Methodist Church, first church in Canton, dedicated on Clinton St. between Boston & Toone In 1850 Baltimore Copper Smelting Co. formed in 1600 block S. Clinton St., making 6 million pounds by 1860 In 1865 Welsh copper workers build Presbyterian church on Toone St. under direction of Rev. J. Wynne Jones In 1870 Public School No. 1, known as Kenny school, built on 1st St. (Highland Ave.) between Toone & Elliott Mona, your relatives came in the 1840's to work in copper mining; perhaps there was an earlier copper mine not mentined in this timeline. Also have you looked at the Maryland State Archives website in the Church records section? http://speccol.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/speccol/catalog/religion/cfm/dsp_churches.cfm Good luck with your search. 3. Jean, Thank you for the Canton Timeline link--guess I haven't done a web search for Canton since it went up! Also, thank you for checking on my question. I have looked at the Archives and will have a lot of film to look at on my next trip to Baltimore (Annapolis). You are right--there were earlier copperworks (in the area--my family was at the Locust Point one from 1845-50, and then moved to Canton. My earliest ancestor died in 1854--I have no idea where he is buried, as his obit didn't say and he is not at Mt. Carmel with the others (Mt. Carmel opened just months after he died). Thanks, again, for providing new direction for my research.
