Congratulations on your and Lolas find. I wish I could find my German ancestors arrival information. I know that they were in Baltimore by 1860 as one of the brothers got married there at the German Lutheran Church. Three brothers also enlisted in the Civil War in Carroll County. I have tried to locate them on the Germans to America but with no luck. The surname is Kosack/Kossack/Cossack and I have tried other spellings. Would like to exchange information with anyone interested in any of the following families that lived in Baltimore during the mid and/or late 1800s or 1900s: Graham Brady Corrigan Popple
Have you checked federal censuses, MD, for the families of Valentine, and of his wife? If you have any info on parents' names [I see you know his wife's father was named John], I'd be glad to take a look for you. Were Valentine's parents named on his death certificate? ...Kim Danielsen WSULLIVW@aol.com wrote: Just wanted to share our good fortune with the mailing list and message boards . A big thanks to all the folks on the boards and lists that offered suggestions and advice. Here is what it now looks like. With hard work from fellow researchers in Baltimore, Maryland we have found my wife's great great grandfather homeplace. Valentin MULLER/MUELLER/MILLER was born in Lorbach, Hessen Darmstadt. He was born there 25 March 1825 and came to the US c 1847 settling in Baltimore, Maryland. He married Mary KLEIBER/GLEBER sometime about 1850. Do not know if he married Mary in Germany or Baltimore. Mary KLEIBER/GLEIBER b 1826 in Hessen Darmstadt. Do not know if Mary was also born in Lorbach . Mary's father John was born c 1799 according to 1850 census and he also settled in Baltimore. Understand Lorbach was annexed by the nearby city of Budingen. So Lorbach is now a section of Budingen. We found that Valetin was Lutheran and it has been suggested that Lorbach is the Hermhaag Lutheran parish. Valentin died in 22 Apr 1877 in Maryland and he was survived by his mother, a sister and 10 children. Do not know anything about his mother, siblings or father at this time. Do have information about his children. Appears his mother and sister came to Baltimore area but have not found out when they arrived. The obituary that was published in Der Deutsche Correspondent states the funeral was from his mother's house 151 East Pratt St. Have not yet been able to identify his mother or what family members were living at that address in 1877. We found that he was buried in Baltimore Cemetery but have not been able to locate his grave. His burial plot provided additional information regarding other family connections to include the name BUCKMASTER. With this information my wife and I have quite a few challenges still facing us. We are interested in finding out all we can about Valentin homeplace. We are naturally interested in finding out more about his birth, family, parents, siblings, etc. Biggest question is how do we proceed. Where can we find the records, etc. Understood we needed to know the town before we could get any info. Now that we know he was born in Lorbach Budingen Hesse Darmstadt how can we get additional information. Appreciate any help, assistance and suggestions. John, Thanks for the information. I had found most of that information today while surfing the net, except for the part by Mary. If I remember correctly I think I saw it somewhere that the records for Stewart and Mowen can be found at the Maryland State Archives. I'll have to double check on that. For Lisa in PA, You asked about Stewart & Mowen funeral home. This was discussed last year on the Baltimore City mail list. Read all the way down Gary's info and for for Mary's discussion with Ronald Grayson, the last operator of a funeral home at the old Stewart & Mowen building on North Avenue. While Grayson's name was still on the building when I rode by it last year, I'm not sure he is still holding funerals from there. It is in a pretty bad area and he has at least one other facility, I think out around Pikesville or Reisterstown. Unless these records are found in somebody's attic, they are probably lost. This was shortly after they disappeared from the city directories and presumably had closed the business. I contacted the Maryland State Board of Funeral Directors. There was no response. Unfortunately, your experience, especially in regard to those who may have had some control over the fate of those records, is not atypical. To my knowledge the few surviving records of defunct Baltimore undertakers have been archived mostly by serendipity (Tickner, Mears and John F. Denny are the only ones that I know of). The Maryland State Board of Funeral Directors (or whatever the current name) is not really interested in getting involved with disposition of records from private businesses. Of course this is the key ... these are PRIVATE businesses and they may do with their records pretty much what they want. The records of Henry Sander and Son are a case in point. As recently as the 1980s, it was reported that there was a complete run of ledgers from the 1860s. Unfortunately, after the home was closed, those records mostly disappeared (a few of the more recent ones ended up in Damascus, MD with another undertaker). By the way, Stewart and Moen began business in the 19th century and had registers starting with 1870. This information is from the 1981 publication of "Records of Baltimore's Private Organizations" by University of Baltimore Educational Foundation. Recently, I've noticed that the Jenkins funeral home is out of business. This was the oldest in Baltimore, founded in the late 18th century. There is another undertaker on the same premises, but I have no idea if those records still exist. It is very frustrating, but I'm not so sure if the situation will ever change. In the 1980s, the Maryland Genealogical Society undertook a survey of all of the existing undertakers in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Quite a number responded that they would allow access to their records for research and even a few were willing to have their records transcribed. Unfortunately, lawyers from the the Maryland State Board of Funeral Directors stepped in and suggested this was not a good idea. The bottom line from that survey is that at least we have a listing from some establishments of what was available. Those survey questionaires are filed at the Maryland Historical Society Library in the Diehlman file. One other thing that came out of that survey is that the records of a few former businesses were in the hands of successors. Lisa, I found the following information on the National Nursing Home Watch List which you can visit tat the following url: http://memberofthefamily.net/watch/215031.htm Long Green Nursing Home 115 EAST MELROSE AVENUE BALTIMORE MD TELEPHONE: 4104359073 TYPE OF OWNERSHIP: For profit - Corporation NUMBER OF BEDS / PERCENT OCCUPIED: 144 / 85 Also, I do believe that Grayson probably bought the funeral home from Stewart and Mowen. Typically, when business are sold like that the old records go with them, at least that has been my experience with funeral homes. Hope the info helps, Good Luck. You just need to use the first 1/2, as I believe Lee has already sent you. Anyone know why this happens????? It doesn't seem to happen in non-list mails I send. HI, This link came thru another rootsweb list. It is Old Maps. There is one of Baltimore in 1909--you can read the street names and many points of interest are marked. Mona http://contueor.com/baedeker/<http://contueor.com/baedeker/>
Indentures exist for Baltimore County. Baltimore City did not begin keeping a separate set of books until 1851. Indentures Indentures were written agreements, and were sometimes found as contracts whereby a parent or grandparent, (or judges of the Orphans Court) would bind a child over to a master who would agree to teach the child to read, write, and cipher to the rule of three, and to teach a specific trade within a specified time. The apprentice would agree to serve the master, to learn the trade, and not to gamble or engage in other activities that would impair his or her usefulness to his master. The indentures of the Baltimore County Orphans Court contain indentures of children from many other counties, and even from outside Maryland. These County Indentures, formerly deposited at the county court houses have been accessioned at the Archives in the original record books or on microfilm. Other record books may have been recently transferred and have not been accessioned.
