    3. Hi, Does anyone know if certain occupations were not expected to serve during the Civil War? As far as I can tell, my ancestors, who all worked in the copper smelting industry in Baltimore during the War, did not serve. Would the copper industry have been exempted because it was needed for the War effort? They would not have objected on religious grounds. Thanks for any info about this. Mona

    1. confusion- Obit Index
    2. Kathy
    3. Thank-you all for your responses. But there seems to be some confusion..... I asked if anyone was using the Obit Index that Etta and I put together. I was referring to the Index on the website www.rootsweb.com/~mdcbalti , not to the obits that Etta is posting on these Mailing Lists (that is another good deed that Etta is doing). The website is for the Balto City GenWeb project. Gayle has alot of good stuff there- obits, birth announcements, wills, passenger lists etc (submitted by readers) as well as info on cemeteries, census etc. Gayle has alot of obits on there, but Etta and I saw a need for an alphabetical Index and created one for 1838-1901. We want to make sure it's being used..... It's tedious work but we will go forward (to 1900-1999), if it is being used.... Lee has a similar site for Balto Co that everyone should be aware of too. Great info and submissions by readers. www.rootsweb.com/~mdbaltim Sorry I am repeating myself- I have posted this info several times before, but there are A LOT of Listers out there who are unaware of these sites. 2. Kathy
    3. Jim- I am not sure about a search engine. It's Gayle's site but Etta and I saw a need for an Index to the Obits. You could email Gayle with your suggestion at GAYLELT@comcast.net As far as contributions, yes-- Gayle definitely wants them! They can be emailed to her at the same address. For those who don't have the site, it is www.rootsweb.com/mdcbalti/ There are lots of Vital Records there. To get to the index that I was referring to, go to VITALS, click OBITUARIES, then click on INDEX 1838-1901 at the TOP of the page. This is the site for Balto City but alot of county and city info overlap. Also check out Lee's great County site at www.rootsweb.com/~mdbaltim Kathy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Bishop" <jbishop44@verizon.net> To: <BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 14, 2006 3:16 PM Subject: Re: [BALTGEN-L] index >I think it is a great service and appreciate what you all are > doing. 3. Does anyone know who this ROYSTON, W. might be? He is living at the Seamans Home located in Ward 1. Also, is that the one which is now located in Linthicum, known as the Marine Institute of Training and Graduate Studies? Here is the record - not much to help connect him to a family unless other records rescue me. CENSUS: 1850 U.S. Federal Census; Baltimore Ward 1, Baltimore, Maryland; Roll M432_281, Page 137, Image 275; Ancestry com Image 275 of 349, enumerated 14 August 1850, dwelling 1423, family 1929, line 22; W. Royston, age 31, Male, Mariner, born in Maryland. Thanks for checking and for any help you might be able to offer.
