Cheryl- I think I found them. Sometimes you have to search by just first name and country of birth or estimated year of birth. This works especially well on Ancestry, since most, if not all, of their years have an every person index. If you were doing this search on Heritage, you'd have to have his mother's first name and search for her as she is head of household. 1860 Ward 15, page 38, Balto MD Catharine CUSSER, 40, Ger, value of estate $200 Edward, 25, Ger Upton, 21, Ger, laborer Frederick, 16, Ger, app(rentice) cabinet maker Augustus, 10, MD Next door is a Joseph Keyser, 32, Ger. Sounds similar even though the census taker did not spell it similarly. I wonder if related? Has wife Josephine, 30, Ger and dau Kate, 1, MD. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Miller" <kosacktree@yahoo.com> To: <BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 6:34 AM Subject: Re: [BALTGEN-L] Re: BALTGEN-D Digest V06 #112 > Thanks to both who suggested different spellings. Kathy, That may well be them. I know ages were not always correct, Leo's first name was Augustus, not sure about the Upton, guess it could have been mistaken for Otto as the ages are about right except for Fred. I had thought the mothers name was Caroline as she was listed living with Leo in 1870 in Bladensburg and she was 62. She was deceased(I think) by the 1880 census. You help has been wonderful! At least now I have some leads to go by. Thanks Cheryl --- Kathy <treenut@bcpl.net> wrote: > Cheryl- I think I found them. Yes, Kathy they are brothers, Ed born approx 1832 Fred born abt 1842, Otto born abt 1835, there was Leo born abt 1850 , Otto was probably there but I'm not sure about Leo. Fred and Otto were cabinet makers Edward may also have been a cabinet maker but after the civil war he made artifical legs as brother Otto lost a leg in the war. Thanks to all who have been giving me tips. Cheryl --- Kathy <treenut@bcpl.net> wrote: > Cheryl- what are their approx birth years? I didn't > see your orig post. > Are Ed and Fred brothers? Hello All! Since several of you have been hanging on, waiting for the outcome of my quest to get the federal civilian employment records for my grandfather's brother, here is the last word: I GOT THEM!!! After six months, one letter, 3 faxes, and 8 phone calls, I received his employment records. There were a lot of pages, but most were performance reviews and pay increases. However, I did find out what I most wanted to know--his death date! So I have now sent for his death cert and, hopefully, I will find out where he is buried! Additional info included was a sheet of his addresses, which gave me a new location, and info on his wife, which has narrowed her death date down. I am hoping he is buried with her, so I will solve 2 mysteries at once! Thanks to all who wrote with suggestions and encouragement. To anyone who is thinking of getting civilian records, I say, "Go for it!" In my case, he didn't have a SSN, so that slowed the process, but I have to be honest--the people I dealt with on the phone were very nice, and in fact, the last guy was the one who actually found the records and he personally pushed them thru the system, xeroxing and mailing them the same day he found them, as he knew I had been waiting so long. So, yes, there are bureaucratic problems, but in my case, it was the system, not the people! Mona
Thanks to both who suggested different spellings. I have tried just about every way of spelling it. I have even tried Cosagh. I have no trouble finding them after the 1870 census, it is just before. I know they were here, I have all of their military records from the Civil War. It just gives me they were from Prussia. I perhaps need to try them over there and maybe that will help. I have been searching in vain for port of entry for this family who were from Prussia. I can't find them in any of the Germans to America books and I have even checked other spellings.According to various census records that I have they were here in 1859. Karen: Have you tried the Baltimore City Archive? I know they have a collection of tax records but don't know exactly the dates covered. In addition to the tax and payment books, some dates also have the field assessors books which describe the property being taxed. In reviewing old genealogy notes I found that the Bankson family was being researched by Margaret Isabelle Obert. There was some question as to whether James N. Bankson was the son of Joseph Otter Bankson (1761-1805) or his brother, James Bankson (1759-1808). Was there ever any definitive data as to which one was the father? As I recall, the data was needed for DAR Membership for a descendent of one of James N.'s sisters. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks, Martha Bankson Lyle Pace, Florida

I was going to post about how great this book was yesterday, and then I got this notice today. I sure wish I could be there for the book signing. This is a great book if you are interested in Baltimore in the 1840s-70 or so. The author includes lots of names--especially in the west and northwest parts of the city--and has a fabulous bibliography. I had just picked this book up at the MD Archives on my trip there in March and just finished reading it. Hi Mona, Would you please check this book for the names Madschopskey (or something similar) and Sisco. My Madschopskey family lived in Fells Point from 1810 and were bakers. The name was changed to Sisco about 1815 and they still had a bakery under that name, but later had a flag and notions store. Thanks.
