Ref.....Old Gunpowder Baptist cemetery being strange/different...believe the story goes - "that the land for the church and cemetery was purchased with the understanding that anyone could be buried there by simply picking out their site (non-church members, as well as, no money required)." There is probably more too it but that is all I remember about it being strange/different! Walt "Mary E. Gain" wrote: > > I'll be happy to do that for you. Mel, I know Hillen St. is still located here in Baltimore, but I do believe Chestnut has gone by the wayside to make room for the project housing sites. But I will give you a few URL's to see if you can get some maps out of them. >> U.S.Atlas site: 1880 - 1900 >> http://www.genealogybulletin.com/HTML/cyndi.html << is one place, and for another possible site, try...>> Maps on the internet: >> http://www.ahtd.state.ar.us/Maps/MiscMaps/comapnam.jpg <<< Good luck on your search'es. Can someone steer me to where I can obtain a street map of downtown Baltimore for about 1888. I have a copy of a envelope addresses to my grandfather's brother: Robert Schmidt 1019 Hillen st, corner of Chestnut. Baltimore. It is dated november 1888. Thank you Mel Schmidt Woodburn, Oregon
I'll be happy to do that for you. People have helped me and I would like to repay their kindness. I don't know where all that business of the cemetary being different is coming from. It is an old cemetary with lots of old stones, we have found quite a few of my husband's relatives there. I can always get my electric scooter out and go up and down the rows. My husband does the hilly parts, and it is hilly, and I stay on the flat. We'll keep in touch. Susan, Put these aside for possible references.......From Early Church Records of Chester Co. Pa. Vol. #2, there was a Thomas Marshall who from Uwchlan MM on 9th. da., 12th. mo., 1778, cetificate to Concord MM. And at Goshen MM there was a John Marshall, son of Thomas, dec'd of Birmingham m. 1760.11.27, Hannah James at Goshen. And from New Garden MM; Thomas Marshall and Ann, his wife and their children: Martha, Hannah, Joseph, Esther and Ann to Kennett MM, 1788.5.5... You never know if something might click for you. Mary, that would be wonderful! My relative I am particularly looking for is Thomas Marshall. He died in 1831. I am hoping that his tombstone will have a birthdate and also the month and day he died. Also, I have been unable to find out who his wife was and am hoping she is buried beside him. Sorry to hear you have MS but it sounds like you are doing pretty well with it so far. Susan
Gunpowder Baptist in Freeland is about 16 miles north of Gunpowder Quaker Meeting House straight up Rte 83. Gunpowder Quaker Meeting House is on Priceville Road, pretty much by itself. There's another church in site but defiitely not across the street and besides I'm certain that is Bosley United Methodist. There are plenty of tombstones at Gunpowder Quaker Cemetery and although they are not at all decorative, they definitely do have names & dates on them and it appeared to me when I last visited it that families were in groups of some sort. It is not a large cemetery. If the church, Gunpowder Baptist, does not have records you might check with the Maryland Historical Society to see if there are any published records of that cemetery/church or if they know where records might be kept. http://www.mdhs.org/ They should be able to help you (for a fee). And if anyone who lives in that part of the county is willing to do a tombstone transcription we would certainly welcome it to the Tombstone Transcription Project. I have been to the cemetary several times and it looks just like any other I have visited. I don't know why it would be considered any different. Hello Susan: I live in Florida and have people buried in Gunpowder, However I used to live in Maryland and have been to the cemetery twice and intend to go again a few months time when I visit my daughterwho lives in Delaware. This will depend upon my heath (I have MS) but I will be happy to check on any gravesites for you at that time. Would you like me to do this for you? Thanks to all of you who provided responses to my question about this cemetery. It looks like it will be impossible to get burial records, which I had hoped for, without a trip to the cemetery. And since I live in Milwaukee, that may be a long time coming! Certainly appreciate everyone's help, though. Susan
Well, Donna, that sure saves me a phone call as I was going to call the new church and see about burial records. Sounds like one has to visit the cemetery and look for tombstones and hope the old ones are still readable. Don't know when I will ever get that done as I live in Milwaukee. By the way, just why was the old church and cemetery considered the strangest in the country? Susan

That may be Gunpowder Quaker Ch. They only put numbers, bury in the order you die, not by family. I have never seen the place you are talking about but my early Balt Co. family belonged to Gunpowder Friends and I have read about Friends customs. Excuse for butting in if I am wrong. Kay in Fl
Thank you for that information. Mygggrandfather was the postmaster for a postoffice that used to be located on 288 Hammonds Ferry Road, right across from the railroad tracks. My aunt has a table that used to be in the postoffice,so that got me interested in the history. Thanks for you'r help,Bonnie
Hi, In the 1900 Census: MD Baltimore City(l8th ward),Roll 161p. 98, E.D.232 my grandfather Koontz, Edward is listed along with his wife, Roberta B. and their 5 children and aunt. As we never knew grandfather had this first family, we were wondering how to find Roberta's maiden name? We don't know where they were married, the year was possibly 1888 or 87. Thank you....Victoria
The Post Office for the Lansdowne area would most likely have been located in Arbutus, as the zone would have been 27 at that time, which it is 21227 now, and the address then was on Linden Ave. in Arbutus (1300 blk.) but has since for quite a few years been located on Whaechli Ave. at Sulphur Spring Rd. It covers the area's of Arbutus, Halethorpe, St.Denis, Relay, Violetville, English Council/Baltimore Highlands, and Lansdowne. And it used to cover part of the Howard County section of Elk Ridge before they got their own post office. Across Middletown Rd. is a small, old, white church, which I was told was the old Gunpowder Baptist Church, with an old cemetery attached. The people at the new Gunpowder Baptist church were kind enough to give me the name of the caretaker for the cemetery. When I wrote to him, he sent me a copy of a newspaper article about the cemetery being the strangest cemetery in the country. However both the people at the New Gunpowder Baptist Church and the caretaker I contacted claim that there are no actual records for burial in the old church cemetery. If anyone knows of any records for this cemetery, I would appreciate knowing of them Thanks Donna

There is an index for wills at the State Archives (MSA) and the Wills are on microfilm there, originals used to be at the courthouse. but where sent to MSA for filming and conservation. Also one can find administration of estates and inventories of estates with indexes these records on microfilm at the MSA. There are some cemetery records that have been compiled. A lot of people were buried in family plots on their land and those have disappeared over the years with changes in ownership, development ect. Might find a death notice in an early newspaper of that time. Baltimore American would be the most likely for 1831, though not all issues exist. Lee
