My GGG grandfather was killed on the steamer Medora in April 1842. You should be able to get copies of articles from the Pratt Library in Baltimore. Searching the BALTGEN archives I located the following post, which indicates that this John Watchman was either killed or injured in this stemboat explosion, and that biographical information might be available about those on this list. Needless to say, I am very interested in this incident, and in any biographical information. I hope the old e-dress is still valid. Sharilyn: I don't know if this will help, but in my database I have a Henry Watchman born 29 October 1876. He married Anna Margaretha Renner (daughter of John Philipp Renner and Magdalena Holdefer). Henry Watchman died 27 Feb 1958 and is interred in Baltimore Cemetery. This is a somewhat collateral line for me so I don't know anything more about Henry Watchman. However, Mike Brill, who also monitors this list, is more directly related (or I think his wife is anyway). Perhaps he will see this message and make contact. If not, and you want to reach him directly, let me know and I'll put you two together. Gary 2 March 2002 Baltimore http://home.att.net/~g.ruppert > Thanks so much for looking. Hello everyone, I'm new to the list... I've been trying to research this side of my family... but haven't found much. Here's who I'm looking for: John Oliver Bayne Sr and Dora Mae Tillman (or TIlghman) and his parents John Thomas Bayne and Florence Bowen. I know both couples are from Balimore County MD-probably Middle River or Owings Mills area... They are my great grand and gr-gr-grandparents. I would like as much info as possibly... death dates, marriage records, census, siblings, descendents etc.. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Christy Woodward

I have a copy of the 1804 Baltimore Directory. There are no WATCHMANs listed. Roger Kearney
Hi Mel, To you happen to know the FHL film number for the Baltimore City Directories? Jerry Gary Walnut Creek, CA
Thanks so much for looking. John Watchman frst appers on the 1820 census, so I suspect if he were going to appear in the Baltimore Directory, it would be after that. I appreciate your response very much. Sharilyn Roger Kearney/Square1 wrote: > > I have a copy of the 1804 Baltimore Directory. and questions about the "Baltimore Directory" I am new to Baltimore research, and I'd surely appreciate the help of folks experienced in these things. I am researching the surname WATCHMAN, of which there are precious few. In Stratton, Harriet Russell's "A Book of Strattons", The Grafton Press. New York. 1908. I found this: "...At about the same time two other Strattons appeared in Baltimore, Robert and James, supposed to be cousins of William. In 1802 they were in the grocery business, corner Lancaster and Market Streets, Fells Point. Nothing more is known of Robert except that he died in Baltimore in 1836, leaving about $3,500 worth of property, secured by a mortgage on a house and lot in Tenth Street, New York City. The legatees and executors of his will were his two friends, **JOHN WATCHMAN and John Bratt, two noted machinists of Baltimore.** In related entry the book mentions the "Baltimore Directory" of 1796-1801 in which Strattons appear. I'm wondering if "noted machinist" John WATCHMAN might also appear in some later issue off this directory, and how to access such a record. Any ideas on how I find out more about this John WATCHMAN of Baltimore? The earliest John Watchman of Baltimore I find is in the 8th Ward, on the 1820 Federal Census. Perhaps it is this same man. Many thanks, Sharilyn Whitaker
Sharilyn You can order the Baltimore city directories through any Family History Center (Mormon/LDS) library. cost is about $3.50 for a two to three week loan.
