1. [BALTGEN-L] Re:Bull's Head Tavern and Hotel
2. Hi Kathryn: Yes, I've heard of the Bull's Head Tavern and Hotel. My great, great grandfather, Patrick CORCORAN owned it in 1860 He is listed in the Baltimore City Directory as the proprietor of the "Bull's Head Tavern" at 132 N. Front Street, near Gay Street and Belair Market. His son, Christopher was listed as the Barkeeper. It evidently was also a boarding house and hotel. He sold it sometime before 1863, because new owners, Tracey & Stansbury, are listed then. The price was $600. In 1877, it was owned by Wheeler & Tawney. Mary Jean

1. Re: [BALTGEN-L] John WATCHMAN "noted machinist" of Baltimore
2. Hello Sharilyn, I believe the John Watchman you are looking for is found in the 1850 Census, Baltimore Maryland 15Th Ward, page 17 . Enumerated July 17, 1850. He is listed as aged 60 (w/m) born in England. Value of Real Estate 12,000., Occupation, Engineer. Also living in the household is Sarah Johnson, (w/f) age 59 who was born in Pennsylvania. John Watchman did not die in the explosion of the Steamboat Medora on April 14, 1842. He was the contractor/builder of the engine of the Medora and he survived the accident. The Medora was built by The Baltimore Steam Packet Company and was taking a trial run before turning her over to her new owners (The Virginia and Maryland Steam Navigation Company), when the boiler exploded at Cully's Wharf near Federal Hill in the Baltimore Harbor. I am not sure whether John Watchman worked for The Baltimore Steam Packet Company or whether Mr. Watchman was a subcontractor for The Baltimore Steam Packet Company. I believe the latter. There was an inquest held pertaining to the explosion in which John Watchman was the first sworn to testify. There are quite a few newspaper articles regarding the Medora, in which John Watchman is named throughout, in both The Sun (Baltimore) and also the Baltimore American & Daily Advertiser. Both papers dated from April 15, 1842 through April 22, 1842 give a detailed account of the accident, the inquiry, lists of wounded and dead, and death notices. Copies may be found on microfilm at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, 400 Cathedral Street, Baltimore City, MD. Enoch Pratt also carries the Baltimore City Directories you asked about in your query. Their website is located at: http://www.pratt.lib.md.us/ Good luck with your research, Dee Gabler Pasadena, Maryland <<In a message dated 3/2/02 2:55:41 PM Eastern Standard Time, sharilyn@northcoast.com writes: > Subj:[BALTGEN-L] John WATCHMAN "noted machinist" of Baltimore > Date:3/2/02 2:55:41 PM Eastern Standard Time > From:sharilyn@northcoast.com > Reply-to:BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com > To:BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com > <<and questions about the "Baltimore Directory" > > > I am new to Baltimore research, and I'd surely appreciate the > help of folks experienced in these things. > > I am researching the surname WATCHMAN, of which there are > precious few. > > In > > Stratton, Harriet Russell's "A Book of > Strattons", The Grafton Press. 1. [BALTGEN-L] METCALF(E) Researchers (1770s-1800s)
2. David Metcalfe
3. Folks, I'm looking to connect with METCALF(E) researchers in Maryland. I badly need help and advice from fellow METCALFE researchers! Questions: 1) Do you have a "Vincent METCALFE" of KY in your data? 2) What MD counties should I spend time in for 1770-1810 METCALFE research, if I have only one visit of a few days? (I hope to visit in April. I'm from Seattle.) 3) What are the best record/literary places for METCALFE research in MD? 4) Any advice on how I may make the leap I describe below without knowing the father's given name? ------------------------- My trouble... My GGGgrandfather Vincent METCALFE was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, about 1807. (He married Nancy CUMMINS in 1832.) All I know of Vincent's parents is from the 1880 census records that lists his father being from Maryland and mother begin from Kentucky. I've just about exhausted all avenues of identifying Vincent's father from a KY perspective. The only lead I have is that the Cpt John METCALFE descendents were well established in Bourbon County in the early 1800s, but I have not been able to make a connection with known research. Facts: 1) Unknown METCALFE moved from MD to KY before 1807 2) Unknown METCALFE lived in Bourbon Co, KY, in 1807 3) Unknown METCALFE married in KY 4) Unknown METCALFE had son Vincent born in KY 5) Unknown METCALFE may have had a daughter Mary Ann 6) Vincent was poor and not educated Thank you and kind regards, David Metcalfe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
