Hello Lee, Thank you very much for your informative history on the migration of people from Virginia to Providence! I was wondering if perhaps this could also explain why other families migrated from Virginia to other parts of Maryland besides Anne Arundel County, namely, the Quakers who formed Tucahoe, Betty's Cove, and expecially Third Haven Meeting house in Talbot County in the 1600s? Joe: Although, a child could certainly have been born to a prostitute, I think the chances of a child simply being born out-of-wedlock is a far more likely situation ... of course, you have a few other children born to this single mother, so the situation is complicated. Anyway, as you already discovered, there are no birth registrations in Baltimore City until four years after the event that you want. Your best bet for finding some record of the birth is to locate a church record where the child was baptized. Illegitimate births occur frequently in every church record I have ever seen (although some identify the fact that the mother was not married, many simply don't make any mention of a father). To find a church, you'll need to know Catholic vs. Protestant and then research the churches nearest the address where the mother lived at the time. By the way, as an aside, Baltimore City was not a part of Baltimore County in 1871. The City became an independent entity in 1851 and remains so to this day. I doubt that prostitution was any more legal in 1871 than it is today ... but I'm sure it was practiced. As to special court records for "bastard children" ... I've not heard of that but someone more knowledgeable may have other advice. Good Luck. Shirley, thanks for the Thomas Bentley lookup in "Baltimore Families." Would you know where to find info about a Captain Carroll "releasing a dowry for a Hannah Thomas upon her marriage to Thomas Bentley?" Any info appreciated. Sharon
Hi, I am hoping that someone would know how to trace an annulled marriage. Does that mean that there is no record of the marriage? Or is there a record? Like a divorce? Thanks in advance, Arlene

Gary, I appreciate the suggestions. I'll try the church records some time since the grandparents were Presberterians. Also, in NC there were bastardy bonds posted so that the state was protected from supporting children born out of wedlock. Thanks for the help. g.ruppert@att.net wrote: Joe: Although, a child could certainly have been born to a prostitute, I think the chances of a child simply being born out-of-wedlock is a far more likely situation ... of course, you have a few other children born to this single mother, so the situation is complicated. Great! I love it! The history of this region is marvelous and it adds to all genealogy to know what was happening at the time they lived.........My Husband descended from the line of Ninian Beall who was a burgess among many other things in the Colony of Maryland. He is credited with Maryland becoming a Colony where religious freedom was guaranteed by the Articles of Remonstrance. He although not a Presbyterian himself, resettled an entire Presbyterian community into the Colony along with their Minister. Putting flesh on the bones of our ancestors is enhanced by knowing their story and the times they lived in, at least it is to me..........RJ ========Original Message======== Subj: Re: [BALTGEN-L] Chew-Ayres Date: 7/27/02 12:34:53 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: leeg@erols.com (Lee) Reply-to: BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com To: BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com At 11:42 AM 7/26/02 -0600, you wrote: >Yes, the CHEW family was Quaker in its early days in MD. Governor Berkley of VA was a loyal supporter of the Crown (King Charles) and certainly did not recognize Cromwell..Berkely was also strong in his beliefgs for the state church (of England). So in general most of the people in VA (lower Norfolk County in particular) who supported Cromwell, were "Puritans" or "Independents" and were among the settlers who came to Anne Arundel Co. ca 1650-1651. One has to realize that among the Puritan leaders, William Durrand, Edward Lloyd and Cornelius Lloyd were fined and persecuted in VA for preacher counter to the church of England and were among the leaders of the settlers that came to Anne Arundle Co. at the invitation of Gov William Stone. As things heated up with Cromwell in England there was fall out in MD with the "puritans" in Anne Arundel Co rebelling against the "rule/ownership" of the Lord Baltimore (a Papist) and Wm Stone.. I think the Battle of the Severn was basically fall out of the English Civil war. It appears from what I have read, that with the influence of Quaker missionaries in MD in the mid 1650s, several of the "puritans" or independents adopted the Quaker beliefs. Of course the "Puritans" in power at the time seemed to be as intolerant of other beliefs and Gov Berkley was intolerant of them... So I would say it would be hard to determine when some of the MD Quaker families became Quakers, it may have been after they arrived in MD and as the reign of Cromwell was in decline or over.. of course within 40 years MD adopted the CoE as the state church..more of less.
