Hi For those of you who contacted me regarding St. Alphonsus Cemetery...the holdings of the Redemptorist cemeteries are now at the office for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery. The Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery office is no longer open, according to the lady I spoke with at Sacred Heart of Jesus when I sent a letter looking for a relative who had been buried at Holy Redeemer. I would assume the St. Alphonsus records also moved to this new office. Their address and phone number is: 7401 German Hill Road Baltimore, MD 21222 (410)284-0648 > -----Original Message----- > From: Patscga@aol.com [SMTP:Patscga@aol.com] > Sent: Thursday, August 08, 2002 3:44 PM > To: BALTGEN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [BALTGEN-L] St. Alphonsus Cemetery > > Is there an office there where I could contact someone to locate a relative > who is probably buried there? Can anyone tell me what colleges would have been operating in the 1830's to 1850's in Baltimore? My 2great grandfather was suppose to have attended a college in Baltimore in the 1840's. I would like to contact them or find someone that may have the enrollment rosters for that time frame. Thanks Sharon Osborn-Ryan sharonor@aracnet.com
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any dealings with getting information from the University of Baltimore library. I came across some misc. information. Listed in the Archives of Polonia XXXVIII Box 1 surname Brulinski and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about getting it. Beulah Walters married Charles Arminius Pole November 25, 1916 in Waverly Parsonage in Baltimore. Does anyone know what church Waverly parsonage was connected with? Other family history would indicate that it likely was Methodist? I'm trying to find the parents of Charles Arminius Pole. Peggy McClanahan

I had trouble locating Gary Ruppert's new book, "Trinity Lutheran Church Records" at Willow Bend Books. If you had the same trouble, try this: http://WillowBendBooks.com Choose "Advanced Search" from the list on the left. Type in "Trinity" on the title line. Type in "Baltimore" for the location. That should do it. The book contains extractions, transcriptions, and translations from baptismal, burial, confirmation, and communion entries, 1853 to 1877. It's indexed. Good luck. For those interested in this cemetery, I sent a message to the archivist for the archdiocese of Baltimore. Her response is below. > > St. Alphonsus used two cemeteries: Most Holy Redeemer, est. 1850, and Old St. Alphonsus, 1850-1915. Care and maintenance of Old St. Alphonsus is the responsibility of Most Holy Redeemer (410-485-4227; 4430 Belair Road, Baltimore, MD 21206). > We have in our holdings an interment book for Old St. Alphonsus that covers the period 1880-1917 and one for Most Holy Redeemer, 1880-1917. I have gone through both, but was unable to find an entry for a Gotlieb Blum. There were no Blums recorded in either books. There were 6 German parishes in Baltimore c. 1875: St. Michael's (1852-) on Lombard & Wolfe ,St. James the Less (1834-1986) on Aisquith & Eager, Holy Cross (1858-) on West & Light, 14 Holy Martyrs (1870-1964) on S. Mount & Lombard, and Sacred Heart of Jesus (1873-) on Foster and Conkling. Is there a possibility that your ancestors could have attended one of these other parishes? Both the Maryland Historical Society and the Maryland State Archives has microfilm copies of the registers for all of Baltimore's German parishes, including St. Alphonsus, on deposit for researchers to work with. You might want to spend a day working with the microfilm to see if you can track down your ancestors. Contact information for al! l of Baltimore's open parishes can be found on the archdiocesan website: www.archbalt.org <http://www.archbalt.org>. > > Sincerely, > Tricia T. I used to play there as a kid over 50 years ago. At that time, it was an overgrown field. There was just a few remains of tombstones (maybe two or three) that I can recall. It was rumored that a noted Baltimore bank robber, Jack Hart, had buried his loot in the cemetery, and neighborhood boys would sometimes dig looking for it. I would not be surprised if the remains were moved somewhere when the cemetery was abandoned, but I have no idea as to where. Baltimore Cemetery is, I believe, the closest to Home Sweet Home, so you might call them for leads. Mark & Tim: Home Sweet Home and variations was another name for Saint Alphonsus Cemetery. I believe this came up on this or another e-list not too long ago. Saint Alphonsus was a Catholic Cemetery which virtually stopped functioning in the early 20th century. By 1960 it was sold and converted into a parking lot! Records (in German) are the property of Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, however the caretaker there is highly protective of them, often denying that they exist. If you put a request in writing and are specific about the name and date of the deceased, you might get an answer, or at least a bill telling you how much it will cost. Furthermore, the person who deals with these books cannot read German much less the 19th century script. So, take your chances and let me know. Can you tell I've had less than a positive experience? Gary, Thanks a lot, and through these records I have, they were being sent to both of these cemeteries at that time. Mark, I am transcribing Burial Records of St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church, Lee Street, Baltimore. Tim **** Thank you so much for your quick response. I am wanting to hope that Danson is in fact Dawson. The dates I have for him are 1783-July 12, 1844. I have Charles b. 1842, Phillip b. 1820, and Richard, Thomas, Emily and Joseph. Would have dates for those? Perhaps Emily is Emma. Thank you again so much. Philemon was born in the 1700s as he was Dawson's father. I don't know where I got this info, but I have a note that Dawson was buried in Mr. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick Avenue, Section A, Lot 2. Does that match anything you have? He married an Ellen Disney. Thanks so much. Marilyn
