Eric, could I impose upon you again? Do you by any chance know the names of the streets east and west of Highland Avenue? Thanks. Shirley
Thanks, Eric, for the names of the streets.
Yes, I am sure. Follow Frankle St south east from the Ritchie hgw. to where it intersects with Highland Avenue. Highland changes names where it hits the AA county line (4th St.) and turns north west. The new name at that point is Edison St.

I don't know what kind of work my uncle did, but what other streets are between Eastern Avenue and Boston Street? Shirley Akins Brown
I forgot to tell you in my earlier letter that there is another Highland Avenue in the Highlandtown area north of the harbor. It runs north and south between Eastern Avenue and Boston Street. It is also a "possible". Do you have information other than an address? Was your uncle a shipyear worker?
Yes, the 900 block of South Highland Avenue I am looking for is in the Highland/Canton area and would be about 9 blocks south of Baltimore Street but what I don't know is, what other streets came after Baltimore Street - I know Pratt Street, Lombard Street, Eastern Avenue, Hudson Street.. Shirley Akins Brown
Highland Avenue is down in Brooklyn right on the Anne Arundel County- Baltimore City line. Is is a couple blocks east of the Ritchie Highway, South of Patapsco Avenue and south of the Harbor Tunnel Thruway and several blocks to the west of west of Pennington Avenue. Most of the streets in the area are very small and I would call it an area where a lot of shipyard workers used to live. The Curtis Bat area. There is another HIghland Avenue in the Towson area going south off of Joppa Road however Towson is not in Baltimore City limits and the address you specified is 900 block South which would indicate that it is south of Baltimore Street. The city addresses are divided North and South by Baltimore Street and east and west by Charles Street. Hope this is of some help.

Looking over the ED descriptions, it looks like ED 410 has the other side of the 900 block of Highland Street. Starting at the intersection of Fait and Highland, go east to Conkling street. South along Conkling to Dillon, then east to Fagley, then north to Hudson, then east to Haven, then south to Toone. On my modern map, Toone and Haven don't meet; Toone may have extended further in 1930. Go West along Toone to Highland, then back north to Fait. Thanks, Eric, for citing my District 647; however, I have that checked off as having already gone through it. Shirley Akins Brown

I have been through so many districts. It looks like the block you want is on the boundry between two zones. I've been making a map of 1930 EDs for myself and, I have Enumeration District 647 as the following: Start at the intersection of Foster Ave and Higland Street. Go south down Highland Street to Dillon Street. Turn west on Dillion to East Ave. Turn north on East Ave to Hudson. Go east on Hudson to Clinton. Go north on Clinton to Foster. Go east on Foster to Highland. The zone is a backwards "L". The 900 block is between Hudson and Dillon. I'm not sure but, I think the even 900s are in ED 647. Unfortunately, I don't have the next ED to the east mapped, which would have the odd 900s. St Joseph's Catholic Church is a possibiity for a Baptism in 1850. Carney is closeby. The MD Archives has many of their records on microfilm. You could give the church office a call 410-256-1630 Mary Ellen
If you were born in the Carney area in 1850, where would you have been baptized? Thanks

Hi Lynn: Tom Hollowak is a librarian/archivist (I believe he's the head of the library, maybe) of the Langsdale library. He is a local historian/genealogist with a strong interest in the Polish community in Baltimore. He is also a very approachable fellow. I'm sure if you gave him a call at the library he would be happy to help you.
