Hi, I know of a person having the same problems. They use hotmail--if I am thinking right hotmail is part of msn. I believe it is a msn/aol issue. There is a list where you can ask about aol problems:-). http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/AOLers-RootsWeb.html It's purpose is the aol vs Rootsweb problems but aol issues of all kinds are accepted. margy ----- Original Message ----- From: "mona everett" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2005 12:49 PM Subject: [BALTGEN-L] Off-topic--AOL problem? > Sorry, List, but I am wondering if anyone else is having difficulty > sending emails to folks with AOL? Sorry, List, but I am wondering if anyone else is having difficulty sending emails to folks with AOL? I am receiving emails from AOL users, but my emails to them are bouncing--first as "delays," then as "failures." This has been going on for over a month now. One person told me it was because AOL upgraded their security. Does anyone have a fix for this problem? Or is it coming from my end? I am using MSN and it only happens with emails I send to AOL people. Thanks for any suggestions--it is frustrating to reply to someone from the list and then have them (probably) think I am ignoring them. Mona

It was all up to the person doing the photographs. Some people had patience and did all the photographs correctly. Some did not. This makes it very difficult for those of us doing our research, but it is better than nothing. I had not thought about stealing the identity of a deceased person, although I know it has happened. Something to think about. I think I might see about having my father's death registered somewhere. I am not sure, but I wonder if members of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) collect Social Security, although they may pay into it. I remember hearing something to that effect. It is really nice to know all the reasons that someone might not be listed on SSDI. When I first learned of the site, I thought that everyone who had died after about 1935 would be on it. Sure is awakening to find I was so wrong. Hi Gail, It was not required by law to report deaths to Social Security. I am not sure if there is a new law to require reporting but it wasn't in 1960 For the most part the reason deaths are reported is to 1. stop a check 2. start a check (dependent children and widows) 3. receive other federal benefits (burial expenses) 4. prevent identity theft of the deceased

One more thing about SSDI. My father did not receive benefits as he was self employed and did not pay in enough. He had a social security card, but when he died Social Security was not notified as he did not draw benefits. I went to Social Security to find out why he was not listed on the SSDI lists and was advised that they did not know he was dead as no request for benefits was made. I do not know if SS was then notified of his death or not. I did not notify them as they would not have put his death on the list and I didn't know if they had any other places to put his death or not. Hope this will clarify some questions, if not write. I found this on the web, people who are exempted from paying SS or else can opt out because of partipating in certain pension plans: Groups not required to pay Social Security. There are a number of groups of workers who are exempted from Social Security taxes: 1. Federal employees hired before 1984 who elected to continue to participate in the federal retirement program instead of receiving part of their retirement under Social Security coverage. 2. State or local government workers participating in their employers' alternative retirement system. 3. Ministers may choose whether or not they will participate in the Social Security program. 4. Self-employed workers with annual net earnings below $400. Election workers earning $1,000 or less a year. 5. Household workers earning less than $1,100 per year. 6. Minor children with earnings from household work but for whom household work is not their principal occupation. 7. College students working at their school. 8. Individuals who are members of certain religious groups such as the Amish and Mennonites. 9. Some primary and secondary school educators have their own pension and disability insurance system that predates Social Security. They are allowed to pay into their own system instead of the government system. Partly because these funds can be invested in securities, teachers' pension plans tend to be fairly generous. 10. Before the 1983 changes, three counties in Texas (Galveston, Brazoria, and Matagorda) opted out of the system and now use an Alternate Plan, a private pension plan created and administered by First Financial Benefits, Inc. I think there are any number of reasons people do not show up on the SSDI, and some of those reasons we will never know. I had an uncle who was killed at work in 1967. He had a SSN, and was the sole support of his mother, my grandmother. My grandmother received benefits under his SSN for years until her death, but my uncle does not show up on the SSDI. -- Monica Mullikin Goose Creek, South Carolina -------------- Original message from [email protected]: -------------- > > Only computerized records are included in the SSDI. Gail: People are not listed on the SSDI if their families do not apply for the death benefit for their family member. In that case perhaps your relative was not listed. Is there a reason that I am missing why a person would not be listed there if they died in 1960. Would it be because he was self employed or a government worker. I don't believe either is true for him ... just don't know. > >Harry Oltman b. abt 1885 died May 2, 1960 >Living on South Glover Street in Baltimore when he died. > >His wife, Minnie Bawell Oltman is listed. While looking up a relative in the 1910 census on Ancestry.com I found the person that I was looking for Henry Oltmann. However, when I view the image he is not on the page that is displayed. I looked on the previous page and the next page and no Henry. Is this a common problem with ancestry.com? Is there somewhere else on the internet that I can find the 1910 Census information? I'm just full of questions this morning. Gail
