Try using internet explorer to go to this site rather than your internet providers browser. I had the same problem and that solved it. Take care, Debbie

    2. I gotta tell ya folks. There may be a lot of information there but I can't begin to decipher how to go about using it. All resources return "error on page." Click on HELP and I get "error on page." You need to be more that computer literate to use those databases. If there is a key to using this that can be expressed in 20 words or less, I'd appreciate knowing what it is. Norm

There was talk that they may do the Baltimore Sun but I have not heard on the outcome of that meeting. Thanks for the input. Godfrey doesn't carry any newspapers in which I am interested.

    2. You probably have a lot of duplication between genealogy.com and ancestry.com. Since Ancestry parent company bought genealogy.com they are basically combining the two databases except for the family tree info. I use to have both but dropped genealogy.com a year ago because it was almost all available on Ancestry. The only exception was the Hearitage Quest census. That however I get with Godfrey and at $35 dollars it SO MUCH cheaper. I don't know if you have renewed lately with Ancestry but they are going to a 2 tier system, US only for a little less that $200 and Everything for less than $300 a year. The newspaper archives are different even though Ancestry has some of the newspapers in the Newspaper Elite they do not have all of them. For example on the Lima Oh papers I get 13 hits for a search on Ancestry but on Godfrey I get 37 hits. That is the same 13 I get on Acestry plus 24 more and the issues are not available on Ancestry when you do a date search. The Heritage Quest newspaper which include the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune is now being added to with the Boston Herald and Atlanta Constitution. The first four have about 1880 through 1980 give or take a few years and the latter two will have about the same years when they are finished. 3. One thing off the top of my head is newspapers were far easier and the search ability was far superior through Godfrey. It seems easier looking for things in Godfrey also. I think the $35. per year for Godfrey is far better than the high cost of the others although I do use all 3. Hope that helps. Even if all you can decipher is a few letters in the middle of the name, you can find leads here. HTH, Mona (if the link above gets "doubled" just use the first half)

    3. Kathy, Naturalizations filed in Federal courts are kept by the NARA regions. If the naturalization took place in Federal court in Maryland (as well as DE, PA, VA, or WV)you can email the NARA Mid-atlantic Region at [email protected] At a minimum you should tell them the name of the person, place of residence at the time of naturalization, and approximate date of immigration or naturalization. For naturalizations dated after 9/26/1906 you may also want to include the name of the spouse and children, date of birth, and place of origin (particularly for common names). There is no required form. They will search for free and there is a $10 fee for copies up to 20 pages. Rebecca >Rebecca- what address did you use to contact the NARA office? Is there a form #? >Thanks so much, >Kathy [email protected]

I have a newspaper from Butte, MT, that has three different death announcements (one long obit, one lodge announcement, and one short death notice) for my John T. Reese. In the same day's paper, his initial is T., L., and F.! Of course, a few years later, his wife's MT death cert gives her name as "John Reese"--not Mrs. even. It does list her as female and widow, however! I had a lot of fun trying to pry that one from MT! Both these folks were from Baltimore and are buried there. Just goes to prove Norm's point! Although, often with common names, middle initials are all we have to go on, we have to both be careful and open to other possibilities. Good luck! Mona

A genealogist wants $100 to find the record for me but if it won't tell me something I don't already know, I'll keep the money in my wallet.

    2. Hard to say. I have no previous knowledge, but there is a website for Civil War information. It shows several John Griffiths from Maryland but none of them have the initial, "T." Middle initials can be unreliable. The website is: _http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/_ (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/) There may be others. Norm In a message dated 12/2/2005 2:01:42 P.M.
