I know nothing of Basil Baker, but I am looking so I cannot confirm your information. I need to give you some background information. My g-grandfather is Basil Baker. He was born May 28, 1805 in Virginia, and at some point early in his life moved to Henry Co., TN. That is all I know for sure. My curiousity began when I was very young. My father (born in 1899) spoke often of his mother's family, but very rarely mentioned his father. I have 5 sibling and each of us is named after family members. I have a brother named Darrel Paige. I asked where the Paige came from. My parents gave each other "the look" and then I was told this story, " My dad said that his uncle, Henry Baker told his ma that sometime in the past a young soldier with the last name of Paige deserted the army (I don't know which one). On his way back home, he found an older man dying; he took care of him, and the older man gave the younger man his papers an! d told the younger man to take his name - Basil Baker. Uncle Henry told my grandmother that the family would never be able to trace its ancestry. I don't know how much of this story is true, but I began hunting. Through years of research I have found these facts. My g-grandfather married in Tennesse and had 1 daughter, Catherine. She married in Texas; her first husband died and then she married a Coe. One person responded to my message. He was a Coe relative. It is listed that Catherine Baker was the daughter of Basil and Frances P. Baker. I tried to renew contact, but he never responded back. Catherine's mother must have died in Tennessee and Basil married a woman named Mary(last name unknown) and they came to Texas in 1836-37. They had 5 boys all born in Texas: James T. (1838), William Henry (1841), John Wesley (1845), Benjamin Franklin (1847), and Isaac Newton - my grandfather (1849). Mary died (?) and he married a 3rd time in 1856 to Louvinia Halderman. T! hey had a number of children Martin Luther (1856), Tennessee (1858), H .C. (1859), Basil Jr. (1860), Erasmus McGruder (1863), John Wesley (the first died young) 1865, and Anna Aruslia (1870). I found most of this at Montgomery Co., Texas. I did not have knowledge of this from my dad. Some references said they believed Basil, Sr.'s dad might have been a William or a James. However, I believe I am tied in to the information you gave me because my grandmother was very interested in framily. As I researched, I found the 1930 census from Henry Co., Tenn. Bassell Baker is listed with 1 female - his age is between 20-30. Samuel Baker is also listed with 1 female - his age is between 20-30. I also found a Martin and a William - both in the 30-40 range with families. I also found a William in the 50-60 range. In the 1840 census, I only found a William (40-50), a Martin with one male 50-60, and a James with 1 male 40 - 50. I also found the marriage records to Eli Hatcher and was very excited; my grandmother named her first son Newton William H! enry Baker, and her second son Samuel Hatcher Baker. I don't believe the Samuel Hatcher is coincidence. Also, I found Basil Baker's Will in Montgomery Texas - He signed it Bassell - like the Census name in Henry Co., Tenn. 1830. I know I have not added anything new to your material, but I do believe my Basil is related to yours. If you would like to correspond directly, my address is jfriberg@tstar.net. Thank you, Jan Friberg
