Then, in 1765, when the danger of Indian attack began to diminish, the Isaac Baker family moved into the beautiful Holston River area of Southwest Virginia, between the Cumberland and Appalachian Mountains. In later years, Isaac Baker died and was buried in Bristol, Tennessee. Isaac Baker's six sons were: William Baker, Isaac Baker, Jr., Joshua Baker, Evan Baker, John Baker, and Thomas Baker. A local history states that of that group William and John Baker were hunters and explorers of both Kentucky and Tennessee." So one of these sons would be our Mr BAKER by this theory. He was the son of ?ISAAC BAKER. Children of (?) That district encompassed land north of the Catawba river in present day Caldwell County. He is found often in the court minutes serving as a juryman and other duties. He owned land on the SE side of Lower Creek bounded by the land of John Hays and Chruchfield Jackson. The selling of 425 acres of land to Drury Williams on May 4, 1797 perhaps signaled a move from the county where he had been a resident since abt. 1778. This Joseph Baker could likely be the Joseph Baker living in Knox Co. Ky in the 1820-30s. This Joseph might also be the son of Andrew Baker and Mary Bolling. The summons of a William Baker from Wilkes Co. to testify on behalf of this Joseph and the appearance of Bolling Baker in other court records could indicate a possible connection. He served in the Rev War for NC. He was granted land in SE KY for service during the war. Around 1799 he built a cabin in Knox Co, KY, but it was burnt by federal troops because he had mistaken built it on Indian lands. He went back and by 1801 had established another homestead. One of his sons, Bryce was already settled there in 1800, according to tax rolls. Another son, William, was also a tax payer in 1801. From what we know, he had at least 6 children - three sons (Bryce, William and John) and 3 daughters (Susan, Sally and Jane). Some sources name a 4th son, Joseph, but there is no real evidence of him. Joseph served on different juries throughout the years and bought and sold land. We don't know when he died, but some place it around 1833. Some of his descendants are still living in Knox Co and surrounding areas, with many more spread across the world. > Here's another story passed around, > "John "Renta" Baker, son of Andrew & Mary Bolling Baker, had a brother Joseph born abt 1751. This Uncle Joseph of Isaac Baker may be the Joseph Baker listed in the following Greene County Case: > 1806: Page 273-274 - The State Vs Joseph Baker - The defendant appeared in Court, and acknowledged to owe to the State of Tennessee one hundred dollars, and Isaac Baker, SR, his security acknowledged also to owe to the State of Tennessee one hundred dollars of their several and respective goods and chattels, lands and tenements to be levied and to the State rendered. Yet upon this condition that if the said Joseph Baker shall make his personal appearance here at our next Court to be held on the fourth Monday in April next, and not depart the same until legally acquitted of a charge alleged against him for BEGETTING A BASTARD CHILD (YET UNBORN) ON THE BODY OF NANCY WATSON, and do and perform such things as our said Court shall enjoin on him in that behalf, then this recognizance to be void or else to remain in full force and effect. > A few trees on line have Isaac SR. The above are from an old post on line by Carol Wyatt. She makes the assumption that the Joseph, who sold land in Burke Co. NC in 1797, was the Joseph who showed up in KY in 1799.
