Of course the strongest tie to the German Baptist Brethren were the Leatherman family...Elder Daniel Leatherman founded the Dunker/Dunkard/German Baptist Brethren in MD from Conewego in York Co., PA down to the Fredrick Co. Area. Three of his sons went from Frederick County to Washington County in 1780-1781. I have no SOLID information as to whether the Bakers were originally Dunkers or not. There was no ties between the families until John Diehl Baker married Catherine Leatherman in 1813 in Washington Co., PA. From that time on, there were many marriages between Bakers and Leathermans, especially in Allen County, OH, where BOTH families sent their children. They did live in proximity to each other in Frederick Co, MD...and I have John H. Baker marrying Hannah Leatherman IN Frederick County about 1775. I have not found Hanna's family yet...nor do I have solid records on this relationship. I DO have a brother of my John Diehl Baker as JOSEPH BAKER, b abt 1793...but no info o! n him otherwise. I also have John Diehl Baker's oldest son, John Leatherman Baker marrying Mary Malissa Lane in Knox Co. OH in 1838. Mary Malissa was b in Tuscarawas Co., OH in 1823. Perhaps her Lane ancestors emigrated from Washington Co., or Frederick Co?... This has been a tough area to research. I have been working on it since 1972, and have run into brick walls...because of the commonality of the Baker name......look this note over and send me your comments. Larry Clum
