I see this one item as important since my Mary ____ Baker spelled her name ONE (sourced) time as Meri BECKER. It is also important because there was a German Baptist minister/leader in central PA spelled BECKER. If we can link BAKER to BECKER, it would help me connect the Bakers to the German Baptist Brethren faith... and would help answer many research questions. Second, equally important is your statement "They were German Baptist Brethren and went to Amwell Twp and East Bethlehem Twp, Washington County, PA about 1800" -- We had never been positive of Joseph and Mary ___ Baker's religion (Brethren/German Baptist?? or Lutheran??). What is your source that they were German Baptist in 1800? Third, is there a chance that my Joseph Baker was related to your Fred Co MD and Washington Co PA Bakers?? We have a John BAKER who was supposedly a brother to our Joseph BAKER. When Jos's son Phillip died, he had children and John Baker was a guardian (?? been a long time since I looked at this info, but I know John was related). To answer your question of what area in Fred. Co MD, Joseph Baker lived in the Taneytown, Libertytown area of Frederick Co MD. (now Carroll Co MD). Records: Fred Co MD Courthouse. Look for Pipe Creek on a map. Brethren congregations were at first Beaver Dam, within a few miles of Pipe Creek where another congregation formed later. As an aside, Diehl is also Deal, correct? My line would go--> John Lane Sr's child, Mary A Lane married Samuel Flowers; their child Rebecca Flowers married Henry McKinley; their child Emma McKinley married __ Nease; their child married a DEAL. Most all these families have numerous tie-ins, so it is possible I have other unknown Diehl-Deal marriages. Back to religion, I saw membership records in Wash Co PA -- only marked from "before 1838" (no records before that). But no Bakers are on that list. This can be explained though if people died or moved (it is not a list of ALL members through time, just one they started abt 1838 -- so over 50 to 70 yrs are not documented). My Bakers had died 1815; 1816; 1822.... but the wives nor kids show up on the list later! I do not know why, if they indeed were Ger. Baptists. Anyone who moved before 1838 is not on the list either. I haven't traced Bakers enough to see if or where they moved. The link to Leatherman is new to me. I'm very aware of the Leathermans and wondered a lot if / how they might connect to our families. This is probably that connection. I am eager to work with you to uncover more. Do you need Census lookups? Let me know your questions; I will do my best to answer. Judy Larry's post said:::::::::: Your post is interesting and may give me some clue on my Frederick County, MD lineage. My John Diehl Baker was b Frederick Co.,MD about 1790. His father was Aaron; his grandfather John H. Baker and the original immigrant was Ludwig Lewis Baker (Becker)....They were German Baptist Brethren and went to Amwell Twp and East Bethlehem Twp, Washington County, PA about 1800. John Diehl married Catherine Leatherman, daughter of Michael Leatherman, of the Frederick Co., MD Leatherman family who went to Washington Co in 1781. John D. & Catherine went to Knox Co. OH in 1831. I have only had the family rumor as to the names (posted above) of John Diehl's ancestors. Perhaps you have more info?....or a direction I may go in Frederick County?
