Weltie Baker, 92, of 61 Adirondack Lane, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. He was born in Defiance, Ohio, on Oct. 20, 1908, the son of the Rev. Weltie E. and Annabel (Barnes) Baker. Mr. Baker was married to Geraldine N. Niebel in 1932 in Dunkirk, N.Y., by his father, the Rev. Weltie E. Baker. He was a graduate of the music department of the Fredonia State Normal School in 1931. After serving as a music teacher for two years in Germantown-on-the-Hudson, and then in Middleburgh Central School for three years, he moved to Plattsburgh in 1936 as the supervisor of music for the City School District. In all, he taught music for 37 years until retiring in 1968. Mr. Baker then taught piano, privately, for many years. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and served as organist and choir director for many years. Survivors include his wife Geraldine; two daughters, Beverly Shumway and her husband Edward of Anchorage, Alaska, and Gweneth Ludwick and her husband Jay of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two brothers, Ralph Baker and his wife Dora of St. Petersburg, Fla., and the Rev. Elmer Baker and his wife Winifred of Blue Springs, Mo.; one sister, Beryl Winifred Baker of Wapakoneta, Ohio; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery.
