Baker, 92, of Rugar Street, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. She was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., on July 15, 1909, the daughter of Mathias and Caroline (Ireland) Niebel. Gerry was a graduate of the music department of the Fredonia State Normal School in 1931 and also of SUNY Plattsburgh in 1960 with a bachelor of science in education degree. She married Weltie Baker in Dunkirk in 1932. The groom's father, the Rev. W.E. Baker, officiated. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and an active member of the United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees. She taught piano privately for many years and then taught pre-first grade at Plattsburgh Air Force Base Northside School (Peru School District) for 15 years from 1960 to 1975. After retirement from school, she did volunteer work at Meadowbrook Nursing Home and at the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Shumway and her husband, Edward of Anchorage, Alaska, and Gweneth Ludwick and her husband, Jay of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
