Baker, aged 69 years, one Portland's pioneer citizens, died at his home at 651 Hood Street yesterday. He came to Oregon in 1853 and had lived in the vicinity of Portland since that time. He and his wife were the first white couple to be married in Multnomah County after it was separated from Washington county. Mr. Baker was well known about Portland as a contractor, and many of the old landmarks were built either by his hands or under his instruction. He helped to drive the piling for the first wharf in the City of Portland at the foot of Burnside street. The Loomis donation land claim, where St. John's is now located, was first taken up by his wife's mother, after whom it is named. Mr. Baker, was born in Tyler County, Virginia, in 1832. His parents moved to Illinois in 1833, thence to Iowa in 1837, and in in 1853 he immigrated to Portland, where he has resided ever since. In 1855, he was married to Maria, the daughter of James Loomis, who survives him. His brothers, W.W. Baker, of this city; J.W. Baker, of Kansas, and his sisters, Mrs. Ann Hubaker, of Kansas, and Margaret Sewell, of Missouri, also survives him. While recognized by all his friends as eccentric and perhaps erratic, he was acknowledged to be a man of his word. His wife and six children survive him. J.W. Baker, Deputy City Engineer, is the only son. His daughters are: Mrs. W. T. Everson, Mrs. R. H. Austen, Mrs. James Barry, Mrs. A. Tichner and Mrs. Clara Annan.
