Bob was born December 15, 1920 in Shelby, Ohio the son of the late Merl and Goldie (Swanger) Baker. He was a 1939 graduate of Shelby High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater, Germany, France, England and Normandy with the 448th Anti Aircraft Battalion. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster and five bronze stars. He retired in 1986 from Shelby Metal Products with 40 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby. Bob was thrilled and very proud to have visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC through the Honor Flight - Columbus, Ohio Program. Bob is survived by his wife: Martha Eileen (Corwin) Baker, whom he wed on June 27, 1942; 2 daughters: Barbara Jo Hess of Sanford, NC and Karen Kay Reiker of Ashland, Ohio; a granddaughter: Cherie McMillian of Sanford, NC; 3 great grandchildren: Alyssa, Skyler, and Kaycee; a sister Marilyn (Rudy) Korbas of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his brother: Jack Baker. Friends may call on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 4-7 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM with Minister Robert Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors conducted by the Richland County, Ohio Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial expressions may be made to First United Methodist Church or to the Honor Flight - Columbus Program.
