(Betty) Baker of Normandy Farms Estates in Blue Bell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the age of 85. Betty was born on July 15, 1925 in Greenville, Pa. to Martha Lanning Eaton and her husband, Leonard. She was raised by her uncle and aunt, Loyd and Lavine Lanning Baird. Betty graduated from Greenville's Penn High School in 1944 and from Thiel College in 1948. After college she began her teaching career in Kane, Pa. After four years in Kane and one year in Greenville, Betty moved to Erie in 1953. While in Erie she taught at Wilson and Gridley Junior High Schools, the Florence Crittenden Home, and did home-bound tutoring. Betty married Paul C. Baker on July 17, 1954. They were married for 44 years until Paul's death on November 18, 1998. During her time in Erie, Betty was a long-time faithful member of Kingsley United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Women's Society officer, candy maker, and doing whatever else was needed. She also enjoyed time at the Glenwood YMCA, and, after retirement, at the Mercyhurst Senior Center. Betty and Paul traveled extensively after retirement, taking several cross-country trips, European vacations, cruises, etc. After Paul died, Betty decided she'd like to live near her children and grandchi! ldren. She moved to Normandy Farms Estates in 2003. While in Blue Bell, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ambler and participated in several clubs and activities at Normandy Farms. Betty never forgot a friend; her Christmas card list was made up of people she met as a child in the 1930s to people she met after her move to Blue Bell and many from the years in between. She was always an optimist and looked for the best in everyone. Besides her husband, her parents, and the aunt and uncle who raised her, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers/cousins, George I. Baird (and his wife, Donna) and the Rev. Loyd L. Baird. Betty is survived by her children, David (his wife, Darlene and their children, Kevin and Julie) of Warminster, Pa. and Martha Tillow (her husband, Jim and their children, Brandy and Chris) of Thomaston, Conn. Betty is further survived by a brother, Mark L. Dudley of Spring Hill, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Charlene Baird of North East, Pa.; and a brother-in-law, Jim Baker of Stockton, Calif. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ambler (Butler Avenue at South Ridge Avenue). Friends will be received after 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial service will be held at Kingsley Church in Erie at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Kingsley United Methodist Church (913 Cranberry St., Erie, PA 16502) or the ACTS Hospice Fund (812 North Bethlehem Pike, Ambler, PA 19002) would be appreciated.
