He is thought to have been born in LaSalle, Michigan, some census reports name his birthplace as Ohio. He is thought to have been born in Mar 1843, and served in the Civil War (Company K 15th Inf, Michigan). One census report claims that his parents were born in England. He may married a woman named Catherine Vermett, in LaSalle, MI, in mid-1860s. He married Lydia Uptagrafft Sherman around 1870, widow of George Sherman, and is found living with Lydia and her Sherman children in Marion, Olmsted, MN in 1875. He had two children with Lydia, Livena Louise Baker (married John Hiram Soper) and John Ervin Newell Baker (married Edith Newlun). Around 1895, Newell married Harriet "Hattie" Holton, who had a daughter from a previous marriage named Grace. The Bakers/Sherman/Soper families eventually ended up in Anacortes, WA.
