Author: mzkrys Surnames: Baker, Gaskins, Balding, Williams Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baker/16083/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information on Adeline Baker. She was born around 1854 in Tennessee and married "Jack" Gaskins about 1870 in Eureka Springs Arkansas. He was brothers with John Gaskins "Bear Hunter" the well known Gaskins of Arkansas(the first settlers). I can not find any information on her parents and on the census reports there is left blank as to where here parents were born. She was a full blood cherokee indian and I assume that may be part of the reason I am having trouble. The story from my great grandmother was that Adeline may have moved from Virginia to Arkansas during the Trail of Tears. I have found records that I am not sure of her, one is her living with a Thomas family in Arkansas and I searched that as well as the Gaskins census and found some Bakers. Their names were Sidney Baker W.R. Baker H. Baker, etc. On that side of my family my great grandmother was Bertha Adeline Balding(married Thomas Abijah Williams) her mother was Sarah Ann Gaskins and her ! father was Frank Hix Balding. Any information you have on this side of my family would be great! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: stephanieds Surnames: Baker, Wiegel, Thomson, Thompkins, Kellington Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baker/16081/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My 4th great grandparents were John BAKER (b. Bet. 1810-1812 in New York; d. Bef. 1880 in New York) and his wife, Hannah. I believe Hannah's maiden name was WIEGEL, though this carries numerous spelling variants (e.g. Waygall, Waydell, Wagle, Wygal, Weigel). I choose to go with Wiegel because that is a Dutch spelling and both of Hannah's parents are enumerated on the 1850 census as having been born in Holland. Her mother, also named (Jo)Hannah, is enumerated on the 1850 U.S. Census as having been born in about 1769 in Holland. She was residing with her daughter and son-in-law, the John and Hannah Baker family, on the 1850 census. John and Hannah (Wiegel) Baker, both born in New York, had (at least) the following children: 1) Sarah Baker (b. Abt. 1833 in New York) 2) Edgar Baker (b. Jun 1834 in New York; d. 25 Jan 1904 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York), m. Agnes E. in Abt. 1858 in New York and had (at least) 4 children: Laura, Albert, Maggie, and Lillie (all born in New York between 1859-1867). 3) Emily Baker (b. 1837 in New York; d. Jun 1918 in New York), m. Alexander Thomson and had 1 daughter, Mary e. Thomson (b. Abt. 1864 in New York) who married a Thompkins and had 1 son, William A. W. Thompkins (b. Abt. 1891 in New York). 3) Albert Baker (b. Abt. 1840 in New York) 4) John Baker (b. Abt. 1842 in New York) 5) Josephine Baker (b. Abt. 1845 in New York) 6) Margaret A. Baker (b. Oct 1849 in New York) 7) Adelaide "Ada/Addie" Baker (b. Sep 1850 in New York; d. Bef. 1936 in Brooklyn, Kinds, New York), m. William S. Kellington (1843-1892) and had 10 children. I've located the John & Hannah Baker family enumerated on the 1850, 1860, and 1880 federal censuses for New York state, but can't find any of them on the 1870 census. I've seen John Baker (a cartman/carman) listed in the NYC Directories as residing on Clinton Street (New York Co., not Brooklyn) but can find NO other references at all. I don't know anything more than what is stated above for any further parentage/ancestry, and I don't know the disposition of the majority of the children. Due to the lack of any apparent documented info for a reasonably common name, these Bakers have been a difficult 'brick wall' type family for me. Any help, connections, or info would be most appreciated! Happy Researching, Stephanie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
