Author: dgoodday Surnames: Baker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baker/16139/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for the family of William Newell Baker, my g'g'g'grandfather. He is thought to have been born in LaSalle, Michigan, some census reports name his birthplace as Ohio. He is thought to have been born in Mar 1843, and served in the Civil War (Company K 15th Inf, Michigan). One census report claims that his parents were born in England. He may married a woman named Catherine Vermett, in LaSalle, MI, in mid-1860s. He married Lydia Uptagrafft Sherman around 1870, widow of George Sherman, and is found living with Lydia and her Sherman children in Marion, Olmsted, MN in 1875. He had two children with Lydia, Livena Louise Baker (married John Hiram Soper) and John Ervin Newell Baker (married Edith Newlun). Around 1895, Newell married Harriet "Hattie" Holton, who had a daughter from a previous marriage named Grace. The Bakers/Sherman/Soper families eventually ended up in Anacortes, WA. Newell died in 1914. Newell also lived in Becker County, MN. If you have any! information about William Newell Baker, please feel free to contact me. I am eager to identify his parents and siblings. Thank you for your time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: tuliptrain Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baker/16135.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My mothers family originated in Kentucky but has lived all over the country. I understand that Marilyns father was called Jack, not Charley. It is my understanding that my grandfather (William Matthew Baker) had a twin and his name was Jasper. But, William and his twin was born in Springfield Ill. just north of the Kentucky/Ill line. I know this because my mothers birth certificate states her father was born in Springfield Ill. They moved back to Kentucky 10 years after the twins birth. I lost both my mother and father before I turned 8 and have been looking for both sides of the family since. I found 2 of my cousins on mothers side of the family a couple of months ago in Mississippi. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
