Her & my dad were divorced/seperated & we left him- going to the south side of Fort Worth. After about 2 nights of sleeping in her truck, we went to the Union Gospel Mission on Hemphill Street. We had some family but all of them turned us away because of the nature of my parents divorce/seperation- to be frank, they didn't want me around because I was my fathers child- that's another long story but back to Mr. Baker what I know of this Donald Baker was that he had an injury & had to use a cane at times. He told my mom some sob story of how it happened but due to what happened later on in their relationship, I think there quite a few lupolds in the mans stories. I believe that this is the guy ya'll are looking for. I don't know how you'd go about finding him or if he is still living tho. The last I saw of him was a few years after my mom & him had split up- (I don't know if they were legally married either- she says they were but I think she just took his last name to "run from my dad" so he couldn't find us) and he was a transient again, living on the streets in the "Cowtown" or Stockyards area of Fort Worth & that was either in 92 or just prior. I don't know if ya'll have found him yet. I posted before but no reply- if ya'll haven't I would be glad to help you search- I'm not wanting anything out of this- I just want him found & returned to his family or families. He had his bad aspects but still, he was a human being. He never talked much about his past- he did mention something about either being adopted by the Bakers or possibly having a stepfather himself who may have been Italian. The name Marlane/ Marlene rings a bell- he would say something about some German girl named Lily Marlene- so that right there could be a clue for your friend/cousin After leaving the Mission, mom, him & me lived in a rat hole on Belknap street in FW then moved to a duplex apt on S Jennings Ave - then my mom kicked him out when she found a few dozen Thunderbird wine bottles (his favorite- some were empty, some full & half full) - he told her that he had quit. Then his excuse was that "he had to have them for the pain in his hip" - when she kicked him out, she gave him $5.25- the quarter was to call a cab & the $5 was for it to get him out of there. She couldn't take it anymore- there had been some abuse issues, the alcohol as well didn't help much. I remember he'd always keep a padlock on the icebox to keep me from getting into it & getting what I wanted to eat out. I was a teenager then & alot of times I liked fixing my own food when I came in from school. He didn't work so alot of times he'd do the cooking and if I didn't like what he fixed, I went without. He wasn't a very good cook at all- like hamburger helper for instance- I love it ! but when you cook it & let it sit on the stove for hours afterwards before serving it, it loses everything and plus theres a chance of food poisoning too. After seeing him & how he was a few years later on the street, I felt horrible. If he's still out there somewhere & alive, he's got to be returned to his family. He's missing out on their lives just as they are about his- he's probably got grandkids, maybe even gr-grand kids who could benefit from being around him. His good aspects were he was very smart, he was an artist- his paintings were the most beautiful that I had ever seen- he loved to paint & do crafts- I remember he was always telling me not to throw away popsicle sticks because he would make these little figurines & houses out of them. He helped me a few times with school projects which were very good. Do your friend or cousin like to paint or do craftwork? My name is Lillie Neal- Donald Baker was my step-dad for about 2 1/2 years. I'm here to help in the search if you need me, if ya'll haven't already found him. Please feel free to email me directly at wyvern43@earthlink.net

Or, he could be a nephew, there was a James Baker in Bedford Co as well, he served as surety for the marriage of both Anna Baker to Eli Hatcher, and Matilda Baker to James Turner. Anna and Matilda were listed as daughters of Basil Baker. I don't know how James Baker was connected, but usually a relative served as surety. Similarities of names of children between our family and yours is amazing. My ggg-grandfather was Samuel Baker, born in Bedford County in 1809. Found in Henry County guardian records for the Hatcher children, and moved to Weakley Co, TN by 1850, he died there in 1885. His children were: Martin, Nancy, William, John, Mark, Riddle, Charles, Mary, James Robert, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Frances, Isaac Newton, Wiley H, Ellen, Louisa Tennessee. Interesting that the name Basil doesn't seem to be repeated anywhere in my direct line. I think the next step would be a better search of the records of Bedford County, VA. I haven't looked at land, tax or probate records for Bakers. The Bedford Co. usgenweb site has marriage bonds, and Basil Baker is listed as surety for 5 marriages between 1805 and 1818, he is also listed in the 1810 census of Bedford Co. as Badzel Baker, and was over the age of 45 which would put him born at least by 1765, he could have been much older. His two proven daughters (from the marriage bonds) are Anna, born 1798 according to the Hatcher Family Bible and Matilda, born about 1804, according to census records in Crawford Co. IN where she and her husband James Turner moved. I'm posting to the message board, so hopefully we will find others searching for these families. Leslie

I know nothing of Basil Baker, but I am looking so I cannot confirm your information. I need to give you some background information. My g-grandfather is Basil Baker. He was born May 28, 1805 in Virginia, and at some point early in his life moved to Henry Co., TN. That is all I know for sure. My curiousity began when I was very young. My father (born in 1899) spoke often of his mother's family, but very rarely mentioned his father. I have 5 sibling and each of us is named after family members. I have a brother named Darrel Paige. I asked where the Paige came from. My parents gave each other "the look" and then I was told this story, " My dad said that his uncle, Henry Baker told his ma that sometime in the past a young soldier with the last name of Paige deserted the army (I don't know which one). On his way back home, he found an older man dying; he took care of him, and the older man gave the younger man his papers an! d told the younger man to take his name - Basil Baker. Uncle Henry told my grandmother that the family would never be able to trace its ancestry. I don't know how much of this story is true, but I began hunting. Through years of research I have found these facts. My g-grandfather married in Tennesse and had 1 daughter, Catherine. She married in Texas; her first husband died and then she married a Coe. One person responded to my message. He was a Coe relative. It is listed that Catherine Baker was the daughter of Basil and Frances P. Baker. I tried to renew contact, but he never responded back. Catherine's mother must have died in Tennessee and Basil married a woman named Mary(last name unknown) and they came to Texas in 1836-37. They had 5 boys all born in Texas: James T. (1838), William Henry (1841), John Wesley (1845), Benjamin Franklin (1847), and Isaac Newton - my grandfather (1849). Mary died (?) and he married a 3rd time in 1856 to Louvinia Halderman. T! hey had a number of children Martin Luther (1856), Tennessee (1858), H .C. (1859), Basil Jr. (1860), Erasmus McGruder (1863), John Wesley (the first died young) 1865, and Anna Aruslia (1870). I found most of this at Montgomery Co., Texas. I did not have knowledge of this from my dad. Some references said they believed Basil, Sr.'s dad might have been a William or a James. However, I believe I am tied in to the information you gave me because my grandmother was very interested in framily. As I researched, I found the 1930 census from Henry Co., Tenn. Bassell Baker is listed with 1 female - his age is between 20-30. Samuel Baker is also listed with 1 female - his age is between 20-30. I also found a Martin and a William - both in the 30-40 range with families. I also found a William in the 50-60 range. In the 1840 census, I only found a William (40-50), a Martin with one male 50-60, and a James with 1 male 40 - 50. I also found the marriage records to Eli Hatcher and was very excited; my grandmother named her first son Newton William H! enry Baker, and her second son Samuel Hatcher Baker. I don't believe the Samuel Hatcher is coincidence. Also, I found Basil Baker's Will in Montgomery Texas - He signed it Bassell - like the Census name in Henry Co., Tenn. 1830. I know I have not added anything new to your material, but I do believe my Basil is related to yours. If you would like to correspond directly, my address is jfriberg@tstar.net. Thank you, Jan Friberg
