I am looking for information on the parentage of Laura Baker (born Feb. 25, 1797 in either New York or Connecticut). She was the wife of John Tompkins, born Jan 30, 1797 in New York. They were married September 27, 1817. They had six children: Orin Bishop Tompkins, Solomon Tompkins Elijah Obadiah Tompkins Dan Darling Tompkins Millicent Tompkins Caroline Tompkins. A devoted wife and mother, Lillian was married to Ross F. Baker for 55 years. She raised 10 children, seven of whom she gave birth to at home. Lillian loved cooking, gardening, watching hummingbirds and deer in her backyard and spending time at Crowfoot Pond. She cherished the company of her family and friends. Lillian retired in September 1994, after serving 23 years as bookkeeper for the Town of Moriah Highway Department. She is survived by five sons, Ronald Baker, Richard Baker, Rexford Baker, Russell Baker and Randy Baker, all of Moriah; four daughters, Beverly Baker of Schroon Lake, Bonnie Scalzo of Moriah, Bettina Baker of San Diego, Calif., and Brenda Baker of Moriah; two sisters, Adaline Blanchard of Crown Point, and Frances Nels of Moriah; one brother, Louis French of Crown Point; 23 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Amelia French; one brother, Fredrick French; her husband, Ross Baker; and one son, Roger Baker. Private services will be held for the immediate family. There will be no calling hours. A gathering will be held at 1 p.m. at the family residence in Moriah on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, for family and friends. One of the children was born in Arkansas. My theory on that was that the parents, George Washington Baker and Selata Hudman, went there to visit a relative or was in the process of moving and stayed briefly, while James Jackson Baker was born there in Mulberry, Arkansas.
