Surnames: Baker, Lane, Dager Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JCC.2ACEB/8871.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Larry, You are right - ALL of these families have been VERY hard to track, especially because the German Baptists kept few to no records, and none that became "centralized" records (held in one place). I can tell you what I did to --literally --dig up before-unknown relationships. In Washington County PA, have you researched much on Deeds or Wills? I had to look at neighbors' deeds to find out the Lanes had 2 additional sons and a daughter we never knew. If you can, look at every Baker Deed. Then, take the neighbors listed in those deeds and find any deeds they had. You might find relationships or clues. How far is Knox Co OH from Carroll Co OH? How far is Knox Co OH from Ripley Co Indiana? I know Dagers moved to Carroll Co & Stark Co Ohio with my Joseph Lane. I know Brethren moved together -- even if they switched religions in the new State. Could you tell me some of the Ohio neighbors & connections you have seen to Ohio Bakers? I'm pretty familiar with West Bethlehem Twp & Amwell Twp (the Ten Mile area) families. Less familiar with East Beth though. I am getting very familiar with Brethren families there. I might be able to spot Washington PA families if I had the Knox Co names. Does Knox Co have a/an historical biography book/s? Anything on any of the families we've discussed. It will be write-ups on the adult grandkids of our ancestors -- there might be clues. I'd love to see any biographicals if anything exists. The Bakers are very convoluted. I understand there were English Bakers and German Bakers in Washington Co PA. We need to separate ours from the others. What were the naming patterns of the Baker families? Can you send me the names of kids for 2 or 3 Ohio Bakers that you think definitely tie in? I will *try* to locate my Baker records too and refresh my memory for what I have. For the Washington Co PA ones, did any have Wills or Probate Accounts? Who bought things at the sales? Maybe I'll recognize the names. I've been searching Lanes since 1984, and found 3 lines we hadn't known (we started with father & 1 son), then researched 3 of the 4 kids researched from 1805 to 1992. I moved though before I could work on Baker and other lines. I did get some basic info.... and knowledge of the area families. Again, do you need Census? I will look for anyone you need. Judy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JCC.2ACEB/8871.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Judy...thanks for your reply. Of course the strongest tie to the German Baptist Brethren were the Leatherman family...Elder Daniel Leatherman founded the Dunker/Dunkard/German Baptist Brethren in MD from Conewego in York Co., PA down to the Fredrick Co. Area. Three of his sons went from Frederick County to Washington County in 1780-1781. I have no SOLID information as to whether the Bakers were originally Dunkers or not. There was no ties between the families until John Diehl Baker married Catherine Leatherman in 1813 in Washington Co., PA. From that time on, there were many marriages between Bakers and Leathermans, especially in Allen County, OH, where BOTH families sent their children. They did live in proximity to each other in Frederick Co, MD...and I have John H. Baker marrying Hannah Leatherman IN Frederick County about 1775. I have not found Hanna's family yet...nor do I have solid records on this relationship. I DO have a brother of my John Diehl Baker as JOSEPH BAKER, b abt 1793...but no info o! n him otherwise. I also have John Diehl Baker's oldest son, John Leatherman Baker marrying Mary Malissa Lane in Knox Co. OH in 1838. Mary Malissa was b in Tuscarawas Co., OH in 1823. Perhaps her Lane ancestors emigrated from Washington Co., or Frederick Co?... This has been a tough area to research. I have been working on it since 1972, and have run into brick walls...because of the commonality of the Baker name......look this note over and send me your comments. Larry Clum

Surnames: Baker, Becker, Lane, Diehl, Flowers, McKinley, Nease Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JCC.2ACEB/8871.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Larry's post said: the original immigrant was Ludwig Lewis Baker (Becker) Larry, first, can you tell me a source/s for the BECKER spelling? I see this one item as important since my Mary ____ Baker spelled her name ONE (sourced) time as Meri BECKER. It is also important because there was a German Baptist minister/leader in central PA spelled BECKER. If we can link BAKER to BECKER, it would help me connect the Bakers to the German Baptist Brethren faith... and would help answer many research questions. Second, equally important is your statement "They were German Baptist Brethren and went to Amwell Twp and East Bethlehem Twp, Washington County, PA about 1800" -- We had never been positive of Joseph and Mary ___ Baker's religion (Brethren/German Baptist?? or Lutheran??). What is your source that they were German Baptist in 1800? Third, is there a chance that my Joseph Baker was related to your Fred Co MD and Washington Co PA Bakers?? We have a John BAKER who was supposedly a brother to our Joseph BAKER. When Jos's son Phillip died, he had children and John Baker was a guardian (?? been a long time since I looked at this info, but I know John was related). To answer your question of what area in Fred. Co MD, Joseph Baker lived in the Taneytown, Libertytown area of Frederick Co MD. (now Carroll Co MD). Records: Fred Co MD Courthouse. Look for Pipe Creek on a map. Brethren congregations were at first Beaver Dam, within a few miles of Pipe Creek where another congregation formed later. As an aside, Diehl is also Deal, correct? My line would go--> John Lane Sr's child, Mary A Lane married Samuel Flowers; their child Rebecca Flowers married Henry McKinley; their child Emma McKinley married __ Nease; their child married a DEAL. Most all these families have numerous tie-ins, so it is possible I have other unknown Diehl-Deal marriages. Back to religion, I saw membership records in Wash Co PA -- only marked from "before 1838" (no records before that). But no Bakers are on that list. This can be explained though if people died or moved (it is not a list of ALL members through time, just one they started abt 1838 -- so over 50 to 70 yrs are not documented). My Bakers had died 1815; 1816; 1822.... but the wives nor kids show up on the list later! I do not know why, if they indeed were Ger. Baptists. Anyone who moved before 1838 is not on the list either. I haven't traced Bakers enough to see if or where they moved. The link to Leatherman is new to me. I'm very aware of the Leathermans and wondered a lot if / how they might connect to our families. This is probably that connection. I am eager to work with you to uncover more. Do you need Census lookups? Let me know your questions; I will do my best to answer. Judy Larry's post said:::::::::: Your post is interesting and may give me some clue on my Frederick County, MD lineage. My John Diehl Baker was b Frederick Co.,MD about 1790. His father was Aaron; his grandfather John H. Baker and the original immigrant was Ludwig Lewis Baker (Becker)....They were German Baptist Brethren and went to Amwell Twp and East Bethlehem Twp, Washington County, PA about 1800. John Diehl married Catherine Leatherman, daughter of Michael Leatherman, of the Frederick Co., MD Leatherman family who went to Washington Co in 1781. John D. & Catherine went to Knox Co. OH in 1831. I have only had the family rumor as to the names (posted above) of John Diehl's ancestors. Perhaps you have more info?....or a direction I may go in Frederick County? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Baker, Dipner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JCC.2ACEB/8728.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Dear Robin, thank you for your input. You posted quite a bit of information! Something that caught my attention was in the 2nd generation, James Baker, b. 1847, whom you show as marrying a Jane Ditmar. My James H. Baker (birthdate unknown) married Martha Jane Dipner - notice the similarity in surnames? Martha Jane had at least 10 siblings, half of whom I have biographical info, born between 1866 and 1880. (Martha's birthdate is unknown to me.) If Jane Ditmar/Dipner are the same person, there would probably quite an age spread between her and James, which in the 19th Century would not be unheard of, but again not too likely. Martha Jane's parents were Thomas Dipner and Elizabeth Pierce. Her siblings were: William B. Dipner (b 1866 d unk) Amelda L. Dipner (b 1870 d unk) Joseph Francis Dipner (b 1872 d unk) Abraham C. Dipner (b 1874 d unk) Bertha Kate Dipner (b 1880 d 1952) - my grandmother Emma Dipner (b & d unk) Thomas Grant Dipner (b & d unk) John Dipner (b & d unk) Charles Dipner (b & d unk) Laura Dipner (died in infancy) Does this information sound familiar? Thanks for posting! Tom
