Author: WayneNeily Surnames: Baker, Foster, Fales, Tupper, Neily, Ryer, Margeson, Reagh, Stronach Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baker/15333/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Baker (and Fales aand Foster) researchers, Recently I began to track the descendants of John and Polly (Reagh) BAKER with their first son Calvin BAKER (b. 1794), who married Charlotte Tupper (b. 1801). Most of their children are fairly straightforward, being listed in the Aylesford Township Book, censuses, or cemetery lists (although two of them did marry different Lavinia Margesons, just to keep things interesting). However, I soon discovered that some researchers have listed a daughter Charlotte, born about 1821, who is not named in the township book or any other records that I have found. They show this Charlotte as the first wife of the Willis Foster, b. 1814 in Aylesford (Kings Co.), who moved to Port George (Annapolis Co.) and had 7 children between 1839 and 1856. She presumably died then, as Willis married a Margaret Ann Ryer in 1860 and had another 6 children. The 1838 census does show 3 females over 14 in Calvin's family, of whom two were presumably his wife Charlotte (Tupper) Baker and daughter Helen,! and it is not unlikely that the missing female could have been a daughter named for her mother. Others of you have the Charlotte Baker, born 1820 Oct. 16, who was a daughter of Joab and Mary (Neily) Baker as the wife of Willis Foster. She is sometimes listed as the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Neily) Baker - I'm not sure why, as Calnek (History of the County of Annapolis) is clear that Joab and Jacob were brothers with different wives, Jacob having married Sarah Fales. Understandably, some show this Charlotte as the daughter of Joab and Mary (Nichols) Baker, based on the error in the Baker section of Calnek's book, although he had it correct in the Neily section, and the Nichols/Neily error was corrected (along with Charlotte's birth date) in the Supplement. Most of the on-line trees, however, have this Charlotte as the wife of Jacob Fales, b. abt. 1819. Fortunately, the Charlotte who married Jacob Fales survived long enough to appear in the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses, and was quite consistent in giving her age as about nine years younger than Jacob's, and birth date (in 1901) as 30 March 1829. This much better fits the Charlotte who was a daughter of Calvin's brother Luther and Elizabeth (Stronach) Baker, and in Wayne Walker's transcripts of the unpublished part of Calnek's ms on the Bakers this is the Charlotte that he has marrying Jacob Fales. The Margaretsville history (Over the Mountain and Down to the Bay) has Jacob Fales marrying both these Charlottes, one on p. 233 and the other on p. 234, but the dates they provide on p. 270 (1829-1905) tend to confirm that Luther's daughter is the correct one. Hence the concerns I have about the Charlotte Bakers of the 1820s. There are 2 or 3, depending on whether or not you recognize one as daughter of Calvin and Charlotte (Tupper) Baker. She is not in the list of their children in the Aylesford Township Book, although William Archer Baker, b. 1820, and Helen Baker, b. 1823, are there. Has anyone found any other independent evidence - e.g. family bible or even family tradition - for her existence? The 1838 census supports the possibility, but not the name. Many of the on-line family histories have her as the wife of Willis Foster, but the Charlotte b. 1820 who was a daughter of Joab and Mary (Neily) Baker seems at least as likely and is known to have existed. The other Charlotte Baker, born about 1829, daughter of Luther and Elizabeth (Stronach) Baker, appears to have been the wife of Jacob Fales, rather than the 1820 one. Looking forward to any comments or suggestions. Cheers, Wayne Neily Neilygene @ hotmail.com Tremont, Nova Scotia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandmother was Martha Ella Edwards. Callie Edwards must have been my grandmothers sister as her sons were cousins to my mother, Callie Nora Jernigan. Callie Edwards married H. (Henry) Baker on July 23, 1885, Lampasas, Texas. Callie died in 1892 after giving birth to Joseph Monroe Baker. It is my understanding Joseph was raised by other members of the family and Richard and Jesse stayed with there father. My mother and I visited with either Richard or Jesse in Del Rio, Texas in May of 1958. My mother corresponded with the wife of the man we had visited. My mother died in 1965 in San Antonio, Texas. You will find an Edwards family listed in the 1870 census of Limestone County, Texas. Callie is listed on this record. So, I guess we are distant cousins.
