There is an "Alphabetical Index Cards to Passengers Arriving in the Port of New Orleans Prior to 1900." National Archives Film T527. This may be accessible on the Internet, I don't know as my research was basically done before the advent of the Internet. But if not, you can rent the film and see if your Mueller is on the list. If so it should should his place of origin and the name of the ship. You then can also rent a microfilm showing the ship's manifest and see who may have traveled with him. Our library used to have a catalog which listed films available through the National Archives so it was easy to determine which roll I needed.
