Jim and others, I teach reading the old script and have an article on the web at http://narafriends-pittsfield.org/gechurch.htm. I'm not an expert, just learned on my own and summarized what I learned. There is a lot in the article but just read and learn a little at a time. I also have a Similar Letter Guide that shows similar letters so that you can learn the differences between them. If you would like a copy, email me. I find the alphabet and the guide most helpful. The first look at the microfilm page is the hardest! It gets easier each time you look at it. Remember, you don't have to read the whole microfilm page, just the surnames. These are many times underlined. Once you see what the surname looks like, you can find it again. If you can't make out all the letters, don't worry about it. At one time or another, the cleric writes clearly enough to finally figure it out. Good luck. If you can learn to read the old script, you will have a skill the current Germans don't have. That tickles me. Elsie, My hat's off to you for your grit and determination in learning all this. I did too, and it was self-taught for the most part, so I can appreciate your effort. My only advantage was that I started the process with a pretty fluent knowledge of written and spoken German. My point is, though, that it can be done, even if it takes some effort. And the rewards are plentiful. You will appreciate what I mean by the value and interest to be found in the many marginal notes that you will find in these registers, brief annotations which will often lead you to tidbits that you would not learn of otherwise. How right you are, Ted. I have found great tidbits in the margins or notes of an entry, one saying a great uncle died in 1892 aboard the USS New York in the vicinity of Cuba. That told me he immigrated, he was in the Spanish-American War, and when he died. I then contacted NARA for the entry in the ship's log concerning his death. He is not mentioned in any of the Spanish-American War books of which there are few. Just an example for others. Glad to see that you are still in the genealogy researching pool. LOL.
