Another thought.... if he became a naturalized citizen, and if you can find his naturalization papers, they should tell you the date he arrived. I found my gr gr uncle's naturalization papers in New York. They gave the date of his and his brother's arrival in New York. I rented microfilm of all the ships who came into New York Harbor on that date. And yes, I did find them on the ship Sea Queen. Like looking for a needle in a haystack but I did find them this way. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Cochran" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2012 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [BW] Immigration to America -Transportation etc. > If he lived to 1900 and can be found on a census, it will tell you what > year > he immigrated. > > Kathy Cochran > San Andreas, California > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Morris Felder > Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2012 8:43 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BW] Immigration to America -Transportation etc. > > Dear List: > > Trying to find on what ship my relative used to come to America around > 1851-1853?? > Ricard Leopold Felder applied for immigration in 1851 from Baden,Germany I > presume he came to America aroud that time but cannot find what ship he > used > Does anyone know of a website that would give me information. > He did have a brother living in New Jersey at that time etc. > Any help will be appreciated. > > Morris Felder > New Orleans, Louisiana > . > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > ----- > No virus found in this message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 2012.0.1913 / Virus Database: 2114/4892 - Release Date: 03/24/12 > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I think that what is in the naturalization papers depends on where and when it was issued. It also depends on how citizenship was granted. I am not sure of all of the legal functions that has to be done, but in one they can go before a judge, and swear allegiance, the judge signs it and they are citizens. In other cases they file an application and then that goes through an approval process. Depending the way it is handled the records are handled differently. Like I said I don't understand the complete legal difference, but I have copies of one from Circleville Ohio in the 1870's and it has very little information. I have another from the 1840's in Fort Wayne Indiana and it has several good dates, and a lot of flowery language about giving up allegiance to the German Ruler. For another from Indiana, I tried was told it was filed and located else where. Time ran out before I could get there to get the copy. Maybe someone who better understands the process can explain it better.
