If I am not mistaken the Social Sec Death Index in still on the LDS site, family search, _https://www.familysearch.org/_ (https://www.familysearch.org/) . Ancestry has taken over a lot of what use to be free sites BUT many of them would have been lost because they were hard to maintain. I for one am thankful that there is an Ancestry site. Yes it is expensive for someone on a fixed income like myself, but I wouldn't have been able to go to all the places and send for all the certificates without all the sites. I would have never discovered a lot of my ancestors and new found relatives without it. Rootsweb, LDS and Ancestry and the other paid and free sites have all been helpful. Rootsweb had provided until a few months ago free use of the Social Security Death Index, via a search engine that was much more efficient than Ancestry's. Now one can no longer access the Social Security Death Index on Rootsweb.
